External hard drive for videos

DaBrain 10:15 AM - 10 May, 2009
My Video SL is on the way, and i wanted some information about playing videos from an external drive. Does it work well? Is it recommended to put my videos on an external drive and play them from it while my actual music files is on my Mac's HD?

I have Macbook pro and i thought about this ext. hard drive..

Thanks!

buy yourself a firewire 800 external. firewire drives are faster when it comes to video transfer. good luck.

Does anyone knows if these passports still need an usb connection together with the FW in order to get power?

I use that one every weekend for video.
NLS666 7:35 PM - 11 May, 2009
Yo Cykophuk, do you still need to get power through a usb cable next to the FW? I had a passport once and when you wanted to use the FW you had to connect the usb as well in order to get power. Has this changed with the new models? Seems it would but I'd like to be sure...
DJ Cykophuk 7:40 PM - 11 May, 2009
the only connection I use is the FW800.
NLS666 7:42 PM - 11 May, 2009
Ah great! Will pick one up then when I got some cash left...

Why not go internal. You can put 500gb in that bad boy.

I keep all content in redundant externals. This way, I have more than one read head in action, and in the unlikely event my computer gets stolen, melts down and/or becomes corrupt, I'm back up and running in short order. I think it also extends the life of my (hard to replace) internal drive. I tend to do a complete wipe on the internal hard drive and reinstall the OS every six months or so (or when permissions can't be repaired). I only use the internal drive for programs and temporary work space.

The hardrive in a macbook pro is actually very simple to replace/install. I've done it in like 8 computers.

2 All,

DO NOT USE MAXTOR EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES!!!! I'm replacing mine ASAP. If you let it sit while doing a gig it will take up to 15 seconds to load your next song.

wanna make it 9 computers?

I am thinking seriously of adding a secondary drive as a video drive internally. I would take out the CD/DVD drive to do it.

my luck would be that I put my 500gb drive in the computer and set it all up and everything is running great... and then they release 750gb notebook drives... .. I would want to go and do it all over again for that extra room!

try checking your settings to see if it has a sleep mode. If it does take it off. If its inactive for a a minute or so then it goes into a sleep/hibernation mode thats why it takes long to access it.

I bought "my passport studio" 500 GB
problem is
my files are on a PC
and this is a MAC formatted ext. drive.. doesn't work on windows unless i re-format it.

If i format it to FAT32 using WD's tools (see bottom link for info), will it work differently on the MAC?

What i meant was, My Djing computer is a Mac and my working computer is a PC. I download new stuff to the PC and then copy them to the Mac...
intensify 11:59 PM - 18 May, 2009
get macdrive. works great for mac formatted drives on a pc
djdaddydog 1:09 AM - 19 May, 2009
i heard macdrive is good for that. i have the same HD and do the same. DL on the pc and transfer to the Studio HD. but i reformatted the drive in the beginning to make sure i can use it on both pc & mac.
DaBrain 3:29 PM - 19 May, 2009
cool thanks

i have a G-raid 1 terrabyte. Works great! made special for Video and Audio as an external... drive is also 7200rpm's
matt play 4:56 AM - 20 May, 2009
Are those Western Digital Passports 5400rpm or 7200rpm? I just bought Glyph Portagig. A little more expensive but they are 7200rpm and I always heard that was a must for performance with audio & video. Also, people above were talking about changing their internal drives. I also have heard that it is best to have your files on a drive separate from the drive your operating system exists on... This makes sense so that the workload is divided across 2 drives rather than one.
Joshua Carl 7:55 PM - 20 May, 2009
I have that WD500 too...
I had to buy a fire wire express card.

Watchwww.youtube.com

heres a video I did about it...pros and cons.

IN hindsite like I mentioned in the video, seeing how FW800 isnt installed standard
on PCs, and u have to use a card, your goin to need to power the card, or the
drive... might as well just get a powered 750/TB FW800 drive.
its the same amount of wires.

fw 800 is nice and fast...even though it is a 5400rpm drive.
7200 drives are definatly, for lack of better terms, "harder" to find in what
a dj might need....
they all seem to be these big units.
DJBIGWIZ 8:02 PM - 20 May, 2009
I use external drives for video and audio and they are 5400rpm and it's fine (although I'm sure 7200 would be a safer bet) I've never had a problem with it. I think it is important to use a firewire drive though.
skinnyguy 8:03 PM - 20 May, 2009
5400 is fine for just audio...i use the regular passports for audio via usb. no probs.
DJ-Phat-AL 8:17 PM - 20 May, 2009
Because I use a MAC for DJ-ing I just use this:

eshop.macsales.com

it works great... I do however have it formatted using my encryption software and it works cross-platform between the MAC and my home workstation a PC.

It is bus powered and I have NEVER had a problem with it.

I eventually (when I have money again) am going to remove my internal CD/DVD drive out of the MAC laptop and put a secondary drive dedicated to video only.
