Portable LCD TV Stand Solution I made....

dj hes 2:51 AM - 19 April, 2009
Ok I have been trying to figure out how to mount some LCDs (40inch) for portable video DJ gigs and this is my solution. Everyone said that a speaker stand wouldn't work and that it would be too unstable. I agree, but after more research, 2 bars would do the trick, so I just used 2 speaker stands!

Basically all you need:

1- 40 inch LCD (plasma is too heavy) ($700 I paid)
1- flat panel TV mount kit. ($79)
4- U Bolts (1 inch size) ($2.00)
8- Wing nuts ($3.00)
2- Speaker stands. ($160)

Ill post more later, I just set this up and it is very sturdy.

Good job on the stands hes. Well done. I have a blurrycam too.
D-Twizzle 3:16 AM - 19 April, 2009
not bad, i think i saw a single speaker stand solution somewhere.
you can also get a 42" 720p lcd at walmart for $600
skinnyguy 10:55 AM - 19 April, 2009
good job but i think it would need some skirting around the tripod legs to make it look less tacky.

Im looking at mounting the u hooks in the center of a particle board and then seeing if 1 tripod will actually work, the TV only weights 39lbs, so it might be ok.

I looked around for a bit and tigerdirect.com had some referb visio 47" tvs for $700 and Costco had a 42" for 600 also, but I figured the Toshiba 40" was a little better because of the weight issue. Prices are so cheap nowadays though!

What about a mini-skirt? lol. Perhaps it could help but I am going to have these behind me anyways for my gigs.
dj hes 5:42 PM - 19 April, 2009
This was the first run thru, I am sure I will learn somethings and update thru may since I have at least 4 events to try em out in (outside of the club/wedding) gigs

more pics to come
DJ DisGrace 5:44 PM - 19 April, 2009
I wouldn't let my insurance company see those...... a little too DYI IMHO
DJ DisGrace 5:44 PM - 19 April, 2009
very resourceful nonetheless
DJCheLu 7:35 PM - 19 April, 2009
Good job, i might look into that. How are you transporting the tv??
eye357 8:47 PM - 19 April, 2009
dude, two stands is too much, buy a heavy duty tripod attach a t-bar at the top attach hooks to back of flatscreen, that's how i got my 42" with only one tripod stand works great but make sure you have the metal tripod not the flimsy plastic ones.
skinnyguy 9:05 PM - 19 April, 2009
eye357 - pics? is it a crankup? could you also show pics of how it's mounted? and how do u transport the tv (hmm..that should be another thread)?
eye357 10:14 PM - 19 April, 2009
would be a good thread I am just so lazy sorry , let me see..1 min, i will put up a pic. not a crank up simple a two piece.....
dj hes 2:56 AM - 20 April, 2009
I ended up making it work with 1 stand...I'll put up some pics soon. It is pretty solid and easier and cheaper that getting a $700 stand. The speaker stands are only $40 at guitar center, not $80, so that was good too.

I guess it wouldnt be a permanent fix, but I have 2 weeks until I need to use them, so it beats spending more money than I need right now!

Hahahah hilarious, i actually use this method to transport my 19inch lcd to karaoke gigs :). I just didnt want to chance it with a 40+ lcd.
a-swift 2:39 PM - 20 April, 2009
i've found lots of good road cases for 40-42inch LCD/Plasma TVs. only problem is the cases are the same price as the TVs themselves, around $500 each. if the cases were around $200 each, this would be a workable solution. however, i don't consider a plasma and stand WITHOUT a case, a workable solution either. you can't expect to transport that to too many gigs without a proper case.

I agree, I shoudl have kept the original packaging! damn it.

don't wanna think about how much shipping to hawaii would be for those..
dj hes 5:39 PM - 11 May, 2009
Here are the TV's I used for a gig last weekend, I bought these Ultimate Speaker stands that have the hydrolic in the stand so the stand can auto lift. The stands worked good for the gig, didnt move an inch, but the stage was solid too, and since they were behind me no one messed with them.

In some situations the stands (if lifted too high) would work ok but they are a little wobbly.

I actually put the tvs face to face, with 2 pillows in between covered in a blanket and bags on each side, they didnt move at all, i was worried the whole time tho lol. I am going to make a foam cut out and use some bands to hold the tvs together I think until i can get a more premanent solution.
eye357 6:10 PM - 11 May, 2009
great work Hes that is exactly how I hang mine also. What size tvs are they?
dj hes 6:15 PM - 11 May, 2009
Thanks man! they are 40" LCDs, only about 40lbs.
Funkytownstopsix 1:23 AM - 12 May, 2009
Nice hes,,,,,damn I like the setup....I stop carrying mine cause I didn't want to buy a case. What I did was put them in my truck and put them in the seat belts in the back seat.. Those stands make me want to start carrying them again but still a pain to lug them around. The setup is tight. Do you need two people to put it on the stand..?
eye357 2:55 AM - 12 May, 2009

Thanks man! im going to work on a custom case soon i think. It is a pain to set up, the biggest problem was I had to do it mostly myself. with the TV's now it is about 4 extra trips back and forth to the rig.

Nope, the TV's are really light (less than my mackie 450s). Took a couple practice tries, but I just drop em on the mount and it works pretty well! The stands move pretty damn high too, I am glad I paid more for the speaker stands

Can't believe some of you guys are transporting those things to gigs!!! I can see using a projector but damn, that's too much of a pain in the ass for me. Plus I would be too worried that either they would get messed up being transported or by stupid party people. Of course this is all just my opinion but I don't take any video gigs unless the venue already has screens. Of course it's different with mobile but I don't think I'd ever do video/mobile, not any time soon that is.

I was in the same boat, but I have been getting booked on a regular basis for mobile or club gigs, auto shows and stuff. I had a projector set up also (can barely see it on the far left) but the problem I have is logistically setting up the projector, it was a pain in the ass, and pp always walked in front of it.

Setting up TVs makes me worry a bit too, if the venue isnt right then I probably wont set them up, they have to be in a stable location with no one messing with it.

The main reason i got them is because of djing auto shows. unlike a club, it is more visual because pp arent drunk, and with lighting so bright, the projector looks like shit and it is a pretty decent projector.

Now I need a bigger SUV though! looking at an 05 escalade.. or a tahoe.

It looks so bad ass. Hey Hes can you post a pick of the back to see how u did it? now that you only use one stand now. Cuz the ones u have up are from your older two stand set up. Really looking at doing think cuz alot of clubs here in Portland don't really have a good option for video and half the time when they do they have there video set up all wrong
If you can thanks
dj hes 4:25 PM - 12 May, 2009
one other note, to chain the TVs and the projector together, I used Svideo. Big mistake. it looks ok from a distance but looks like shit upclose.

The only Inputs that I have in common between my mac, my tvs, and my projector, VGA was the best solution for me to upgrade to. So yesterday I just bought from monoprice.com

1- 4port VGA Distribution Amp
1- 50ft VGA cable
1- 35ft VGA cable
1- 25ft VGA cable
2- 15ft VGA cable

Total price was under 70 bucks!!!

I have 5 gigs next week that I will be using this with Ill post more pics hopefully better ones, ill bring my camera this time lol.

Thanks man!

Sure, i will post some pics of the back soon, next week at the latest. Long story short, since I upgraded tripods, the size on the new stands were a little bigger than my old ones, so I had to make adjustments with the mount. I ended up mounting the TV wall bracket to particle board. then I used 3 u bolts to mount the board to the tripod.

Ill take some detailed pics of the hardware tonight for you guys.

Eye has no taste....He is a Giants fan duhhhhhhh!!!. He hates the Cowboys because they are America's team....

I have the Da-lite fast fold and almost always project from the rear and can put the screen just as high if not higher than your stands hes. I like the screen but I think the two lcd's look cooler at least the way you have them in your pic. I can see this application at a house party and small weddings.
dj hes 5:39 PM - 12 May, 2009
The fast fold is what I want also, just too damn spendy!

The real reason the TVs worked out good for me is I have wall mounts at home above my 52" and in my room so I can just bring em inside and drop em on the walls. GOW2 looks rediculous in 1080p!
Funkytownstopsix 6:01 PM - 12 May, 2009
ebay Hes ebay!!!!! just look and take some time and you will find what you need. The projectors are what cost so either way in order to do video you will have to spend money. So if I understand correctly you have a board mounted to the pole so then all you have to do is drop tv on mount. I'm 6ft 4 would be really easy for me I think... Is that how you have it.

That's exactly what I do the same clips that are the back of the tv never get taken of off because they work at home and on the stand.... And Phat don't be mad at me, be mad at Mr. Jerry "I"m too cheap to buy a REAL training facility but dumb enough to give tony "my girlfriend is fat" romeo all that money... I got my projector luckily for free, my fiance's dad works at HP and hooked me up!

Thats correct, the board has the TV bracket mounted to it, and you just drop the TV on it since the tv has a mount bracket on the back. its a pretty easy set up.

I still wanna see pics from your setup!

And I randomly found monoprice yesterday, seriously a game changer for me. I almost bought all HDMI for my mobile gigs.

I would like to get 4 60" TVs in the near future.

I use Colorado Sound N Light's "Truss Light 16" with other lights plugged into it.
Watchwww.youtube.com

They are kind of expensive but I like them because the lights are pre-wired and very easy to setup.
They also have 4 outlets so you can plug more things into them without running long extension cables.
