Yes that is fast enough. Because it's two 500GB Laptop Drives in RAID 0 and 16MB of Cache... With Fire Wire 800 you should get a good read and write speed. Read this.

FireWire 800: up to 75-85MB/s
FireWire 400: up to 35-40MB/s
Hi-Speed USB 2.0: up to 30-35MB/s
now think about this, a average video is 65 to 90MB's, now look at the speed on top.
This is good for editing and Playing with VSL. Some times I play videos off a USB drive. But Fire Wire 800 is the best unless you going to do eSATA.
