Want a 2nd HDD in your MBP Unibody?

Millz 8:10 PM - 7 April, 2009
www.mcetech.com

This replaces your cd superdrive/optidrive with up to a 500 gb hdd. The only issue I have as of yet is the fact that I have not confirmed if by installing this, that it would void my Applecare warranty (waiting for a call back). I do know that the first person I spoke with @ Apple said if I wanted this done, I would have to have it done by an offical Apple Service partner. Ill keep yall posted.

$129 for the interface only. Straight Rip off.

Its the only option as of right now...Im sure other companies will offer similar products, but like I said as of right now thats the only option.
Millz 8:36 PM - 7 April, 2009

I got it, and I put it in myself. It's very fast too, but it kill's battery fast.
Millz 9:48 PM - 7 April, 2009
Eloy,

Can you hit me on a private message about the installation?

Thanks!

Look at this if you are going to do it your self. www.macworld.com and www.ifixit.com

Thanks bro...one question...are u having any heat issues?
Eloy Garcia 7:24 AM - 8 April, 2009
no heat problem I have 2x5400RPM 500GB WD in the computer. I f you use 7200RPM then it's going to get hotter. If you have heat problems get "Fan Control" - www.lobotomo.com
Millz 7:36 AM - 8 April, 2009
i got the fan control, i have it set at around 3500 for normal mode and when serato is running i have it around 4500...when im using video in serato i have it turned to max around 5800 rpm
Eloy Garcia 7:55 AM - 8 April, 2009
I leave mine set at 3000RPM's but as the computer gets hotter the fan speed go's up on there own. One the high's they go are 4500RPM when I am doing video. Now that I use Mix Emergency the it went up to 46500PRM now but that was nothing.
Millz 8:11 AM - 8 April, 2009
the damn fans are small as hell, you would think apple wouldve made a better cooling system for these pimp lappies!

SO a 500gb internal hd does fit in the new unibody, i will be looking into this upgrade first and later on down the road another 500gb internal maybe.
Millz 9:03 AM - 8 April, 2009
a 500 does fit in the unibody, but mac doesnt have the option when building one to include a 500, max is 320 @ 7200. I am kinda torn because Applecare said if I get this done to my mbp, it will void my warranty. Im going to use the firewire 800 port and daisychain a few 1tb externals and see how the performance is first.
DJMark 10:57 AM - 8 April, 2009
Not something I'd consider doing. For one thing, I like watching DVD's on it. And voiding the warranty on a brand-new $3,000 laptop is not a trivial thing.
BriChi 12:56 PM - 8 April, 2009
The warranty stuff is easy to get around though, in the unibody this conversion seems pretty easy. If something fails on the laptop and u need to bring it in, put the cd drive back in before you go, they would never know u had the 2nd hard drive in there
Eloy Garcia 5:34 PM - 8 April, 2009
Millz you will not be voiding the hole warranty of your computer. It's only going to be voiding the warranty on the harddrive. If you take your computer to a Authorized Apple Center "a place like www.tekserve.com or www.digsoc.com then you have no problem of voiding the rest of the computer.
