Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Video Tags/Meta Data issues, who is the expert ?

djfaq 5:36 PM - 28 March, 2009
Hi guys,

I've been asking lots of people from the video field how to best fix your
tags in video files, combining itunes and serato.
nobody had the answer for that...

I mean, when you encode a video file, lets say in handbreak, then you get a file name that contain both artist and title, then serato display the whole info in the song field.
then u change it manually and you'll be able to see it, but on itunes you cant.
so this means you have to edit the tags on itunes, but if you have lots of files, what do you do ?
I have hundreds of video files and I cant really edit them on batch or smart batch,
I need itunes to display it properly (Artist/title/genre/etc).
I dont wanna do it 1 by 1... its a mass

any ideas ??

I'm a freak with tagging and organization so I actually did the all my tagging, ONE by ONE, in iTunes. I enter everything, genre, how it was encoded, ect...Took a looooong time when I first encoded 5K plus videos but my library is flawless!

+5K !
hehe, crazyyyy
I know that Tag&rename does it for mp3, it can write a tag from the file name itself,
unfortunately it's not capable of doing the same for video files.
anyways, I am working on a MAC so it doesn't matter...

I am sure someone wrote a code for that..

anyone ??

Phat Al you're crazy...

Look at my gig library djfaq, Flawless!

i29.photobucket.com - All my gig videos

i29.photobucket.com - All my gig music

I do all my organizing in SSL. Easy to erase files, tag files, preview videos, ect...
DJ-Phat-AL 9:10 PM - 28 March, 2009
you don't have access to a PC whatsoever?

I use a home PC workstation to do all my editing, organizing, tagging, etc...
I have a master copy of my library on my protected raid drives. I tag everything there and they sync up my library on my encrypted external drive. hook it up to my mac when I ready to spin and it all works like a charm!!

I have been told that
DJ-Phat-AL 9:13 PM - 28 March, 2009
but... you can't batch tag in iTunes... and I don't want to be a slave the iTunes...

I can install Tag&Rename on ANY pc hook up my drive there or get access to my library and do whatever I need... and batch... did I mention batch?

batching saves an assssssssss load of time.

just name your files the same way and make your formula to put tags from file name and run batch... SHAM WOW!!!

Looking good !:)
I like the video oriented arrangement you did..
but I still see some "OTHER" fields in the genre section, so ur not THAT fanatic :)

about working with serato to organize, I absolutely agree about sorting the videos
cuz now with the new vsl u can also save the effect and video for files, its awesome.
but for some reasons I could'nt make serato write the tags for video files...
then you can't display the edit files properly on itunes.

I found some goodies at Doug's Apple Scripts
dougscripts.com
Lots of cool itunes scripts that makes it easier to handle the files.
but still there's no easy pass here.. ;)

my videos are tagged automatically when i encode them. atomicparsely is in my encoding script. it tags artist, title and correctly sets the type atom so itunes recognizes the file as a music video and not a movie (which is default for video files).

i can also change the script and re-tag all of my videos in one step. couldn't be easier.

you are correct, interesting point..
I have more then 1 pc to do it, I just have bad luck with making the files go thru pc and then return them to the mac, especially when it's not IDv3 tags, cuz the video files are saved in XML on itunes, also and most important:

I want a permanent solution and definitely don't wanna be dependent on PC's anymore..

You can mass-tag in iTunes. Select a bunch of files, right-click, go to "Get info". Enter info and it will save across a bunch of files.

old news
DJ-Phat-AL 10:03 PM - 28 March, 2009
that is great if you want one thing to be on all your files at once... but what I meant was to name your files in a certain way and in running a batch that will get your artist, title, mix, bpm, etc.. and put it all in the appropriate fields.

but I like a-swifts method better... just not as smart as him :P

Yep, but if you're not using handbreak its not a big help.
do you know or can share some atomicparsely command lines ?

e.g. - If i have a file named - dj_a_swift_-_teach_ya_how_to_tag.mp4,
so itunes will display the whole filename as song name.

I am looking for a tool that can erase the "_" and also write the dj_a_swift in the artist field and the "teach_ya_how_to_tag in the song field.

On the audio side I don't take as much time.

Swifty, you like your videos to be labeled as 'music video' instead of 'movie'? I like to have 2 separate libraries.

i don't use itunes libraries in serato at all. serato already gives me a video and audio crate. in itunes i have smart playlists that contain just music, or just music videos. i can't have all my music videos classified as movies, because then they would be intermixed with real movies and that's just whack. i've got music, movies, tvshows, music videos in itunes. they need to be seperated properly. smart playlists ftw!

Here are the relevant lines from my script, in Perl:

1.) my ($artist, $title) = split(/ - /, $mp4File, 2);
2.) $title =~ s/\.mp4//;
3.) my $cmd = qq~AtomicParsley "$mp4File" --artist "$artist" --title "$title" --comment "Ripped and encoded by DJ A-Swift (www.vjaswift.com)" --stik "Music Video" --description "Ripped and encoded by DJ A-Swift (www.vjaswift.com)"~;

For those who care what the perl does:

1.) set the artist and title variable by splitting the mp4file on " - ", my files are named "artist - title.mp4"
2.) get rid of the .mp4 from the title
3.) setup the command line, calling atomic parsley with the artist, title, stik, comment and description

As perl scripts go, this is a pretty simple one. if you know regular expression of course, you can adjust the file filter to parse whatever format you name your files.

Does anyone know why files that I tag with tag and rename show in serato. but if I tag them in serato they don't show up in tag and rename?? Frustrating!!!

serato does not tag video files at all. when you tag a video file in serato it doesn't modify the file at all. it writes the info to a seperate metadata file that is only understood by serato.

this is why it is better to write the metadata to the file. then the metadata stays with the file.
DJ Sound Technique 4:34 PM - 29 March, 2009
ah man that sucks so if I modify them and rescan the tags will it modify the xml metadata?
Sometimes I add notes for myself to the tags in serato It would be best if they stayed with the files

oh and to answer dj faq's original question, who is the expert on tagging. i am. technically it's not really a "tag" but it's function is the same.
