JukeBox = $$$ (has someone invented this yet?)

DJ_Mike_Coquilla 9:33 PM - 29 April, 2006
Wat it Do Yall...Can u imagine, someone should invent a device similar to the JukeBox... maybe a table top version, that's linked (via USB) to your SSL crates on your lappy (certain tunes u wish to offer, certain tunes you wish to hide).

This device can sit near your booth setup, or better yet, you can have several devices peppered (wirelessly) around the venue, where the guests can view and select/request songs from your tracklist by inserting a quarter or slide their ATM or credit card.
You then have a log of exactly what your customers wanna hear in-tha-mix that you can work/feed off from.... no one will no longer step up & interrupt/annoy you in the middle of you blend/beat matching. kinda takes the fun out of trying to read the crowd though,

.... anyways, at the end of tha night, your pocket is filled with virtual $crilla :).... u can walk to the bank laughing with a 57 and a backup lappy & SL1 under each arm :)

Make sure you can hide some tunes though. Nothing worse than havinga customer pay you for a request that sucks.
Dj Ryme 11:06 PM - 29 April, 2006
that would be dooooope and probably make the dj alot of extra money for the night....... there would be alot of kinks to work out though, wouldnt really work in the club though since and wack request could throw off the night so I probably wouldnt even use it.

can u imagine 40 people all requesting 'My Humps'....thats $10 easy dollars...and u just have to play it once :)
mexicannnnnn 12:22 AM - 30 April, 2006
What if they request:
1) A song that is completly not going to mesh with your set.
2) Song you already played.
djHSL 12:44 AM - 30 April, 2006
As a mobile, digital, DJ I spend a lot of time showing that I'm different by NOT being a jukebox. I'm selling beatmixing and harmonic mixing, against the guys who play their 20,000 song libraries in whatever sequence they get requested, and damn the dance floor.

This could never work for me.

I can also see a couple of problems that might lead to trouble:

* What would you do about people who think it is funny to pay for known dance-floor killers?

* How would you refund money if, for some reason, the track didn't get played?
DJ Yaz 12:46 AM - 30 April, 2006
If you did it (and I'm not sure it's a good call) I would make it a bidding situation. They get to keep the money if you don't play it, and multiple people can get a pool going on a song so it could get up to $100 or more.
CMS 1:42 AM - 30 April, 2006
I agree with djHSL, you will always have some pricks that think it would be funny to request something stupid that would kill the floor. The refunding would be a pain in the butt too.

yikeS! good points... i neva thought of the down sides.

also, what if someone did contribute their quarter ($ 0.25) for sum 'Laffy Taffy', then dashed for a quick #2...at the same time i drop in that song since it had a good fit in the mix. then that same person returned....waiting, and waiting...gee, i already played it yo. 25 cents? no way, i already spent it on a Corona my friend.

bah, humbug
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 5:43 AM - 30 April, 2006
better yet, what if someone continuously dropped in quarters, requesting the same dang song allllllllll night long?
mexicannnnnn 6:03 AM - 30 April, 2006
How about this:

A person selects a song they want to hear. They swipe their credit card and they dont get billed until you play the song.

You have your own monitor of the list of all songs requested sorted in highest demand (which means you get the most money from the top song).

When you play a song you select the track you played and it displays a message on their screen that the song was played and their $2 has be charged.

For crappy songs, you can just choose not to play them or maybe even have a reject button that will show them their song has been turned down.

Different songs can have different prices too....etc.

Maybe you can have a "Duplicate" file notification pop up, you can choose to play it at a later time in the night, let it sit in the list or reject it.

When the night is done you log out of the terminal and it rejects all left over songs (unless you want to be a jerk and select all the songs as played).
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 7:31 AM - 30 April, 2006
ok, mex, that's a def improvement. maybe there's still hope :)
MusicMeister 5:58 PM - 30 April, 2006
It's called a tip jar and a request slip (aka a napkin). I know at least a dozen songs that are going to get requested during the night only because I haven't dropped them yet (or they missed it when I did).

I 'could' charge for playing their song, but why? I'm getting paid by the venue to keep the customers in the venue and drinking.

The closest thing I have to this is kamikaze karaoke. Anyone can put in a slip with anyone's name on it along with money. The person can either match the donation to NOT sing it, or sing it. We normally do this for charity events and it works VERY well. We do limit the number of slips that can be turned in on a single person so one person isn't picked on too much during the night.

What if once a song was played it would disappear off the selections list?
Dj Chris Deza 10:45 PM - 6 May, 2006
Mike I did something like this about 2 years ago for the entire summer. I took a club out here and started doing Thursday nites, the theme was "TOTAL REQUEST LIVE". Club capacity was 800 heads, it started off slow for about 2 to 3 weeks and then it started to work like a charm,

What I did was I developed a flash application with the names to like 5000 tracks, when someone selected a song I would get an IM on a terminal in the DJ booth. They could also put in like special dedication to songs and so forth.

I set up a computer terminal by one of the bars, and had 2 hot azz girls almost naked, going around with TREO's taking request. I was charging a $2 per request. At the end of the night I was making about $600 to $800 extra. I was paying the girls $50 each plus they made tips.

As for people asking for wack jams, well thats why the request list had none. I thought about this before I did the listing. I also had an MC get up on th mic and let people know, that (A) we were doing request and to look for the almost naked girls and (B) also warned them not to complain if they go to the bathroom and doing hear their request.

nice!
lumo 3:31 PM - 23 April, 2007
wow! It all sounds good, but your going to need a separate computer linked to your laptop which will be a mission to lug to your venue!

I was also thinking of text/sms request messages to your laptop???
dj cubicle 3:33 PM - 23 April, 2007
how the heck did this get revived?
Dj Ryme 3:40 PM - 23 April, 2007
lol this is an old ass discussion.

textlive is a cool program that lets users text the dj and also displays their text on the clubs video screen. It's got filters to let you allow or deny the text. Its cool for clubs with video monitors everywhere or if you're a VJ.
DJJOHNNYM 4:12 PM - 23 April, 2007
Wow....
Bigfourty4 4:13 PM - 23 April, 2007
I agree about the whole napkin thing. I don't think it is cool to pay for shit you know is gonna get played.

If you aren't playing what people hear...then you have a problem..and you can't read the crowd.

Also, If there is a person that only wants to hear old shit...and stuff that nobody knows about...you are in a bad situation. You might as well let that person be the dj.
