RAYO, did you try using moviebatchinfo to get details about the file? Does the file crash it everytime or just that time.

Check the MovieInfoBatch info for the details of that AVI file(s) you're using.

Do those AVI files have MP3 audio?
Dj RAYO 6:59 PM - 26 March, 2009
no, i've never used movieinfoBach . but any way,,,, is the serato suposly to close by it self when a file is dragged ?????,,,
that is very very dangerous,,, because the crow they doesn't understand that , they going to start laugh on me ,,,,,,,,,that's not reliable,,,,,
Do yo think that i have to call directly to rane,,,,,,,cause i believe that's a serato super mistake , it's not supose to close by any reason and if there is any problem with a file a warning window should be the solution,
DJ Mad Matt 8:37 PM - 26 March, 2009
Well my laptop's Cd rom drive doesnt have a warning sticker on it saying, "Do not insert a sandpaper Disc" But, I know not to put one in it.

So don't load files that your not sure if Serato will play or not and you won't have a problem.

If you don't know what format the files are in then, Its your own fault. Avi is just a container .. Certain avi's will play but certain ones wont and if you load one that isnt complient, Its going to fail.

Serato can play some AVI's so, it will try to load anything with an avi file extension. It's whats inside that avi container that counts so, use MovieInfoBatch first and find out what the spec of that video is. Then copy and paste what it tells you in the window here for analyzation.

And Rane has nothing to do with it.

you can crash any video application by trying to open a non-supported file. if i take an excel spreadsheet and change the extension to .avi and open it in a video program, it would probably crash the program.

i know VLC, Quicktime, Winamp, etc, will all crash with a broken file. I wouldn't expect VSL to be any different, especially since it uses Quicktime decoders.

thank's for your help , i'm going to start using movieinfobach right now ,, but serato

if you encode your own files correctly, VSL is very reliable. I use it at every gig for about a year now and no crashes. Not one.

Saying it's unreliable because your files are broken is not real fair.
Dj RAYO 9:24 PM - 27 March, 2009
ok,,,,the files aren't broken because in my mac i downloaded DivX (a codec that microsoft offert to see audio video files for mac) and i see perfectly good each file in quick time ,,,,each file good quality without any issues......

Rayo, you can use whatever works but I'll recommend to you, that you use the best file format for the job. In my opinion, DIVX is not the best format. The major reason is the codec is not natively supported. The best format for use in VSL today is mp4 container (mp4 or m4v extension), with H.264 video encoding and AAC audio encoding.

These files will be best supported in VSL and also offer the best picture quality at a given bitrate, as compared to all other formats. The bitrate you can use with H.264 encoding will be determined by how fast your computer is. Higher bitrates require more processing power and file sizes will be larger. The processing for decompressing H.264 is much higher than Divx, which is actually pretty efficient.

Also, mp4 containers support metadata so the files are more portable. You can specify all the tag information when encoding the file, and VSL will read the metadata right from the file. This is much more convenient than containers like AVI that do not allow the metadata to be stored.

When I first started using VSL, I used a 2.0Ghz Macbook Pro, pretty slow. In order to allow me to DJ without problems, I had to use Divx encoded videos. I used the Perian codec but, and this is a big but,.. audio can NOT be mp3 or you will run into problems. I can't recall exactly, but I think I used PCM uncompressed audio.

I now have a 2.4ghz and only use H.264/AAC video files. They are flawless.

Again, if you have a fast computer. Use the best format. If you're just starting out, this should be easy.
