Yes to all of the above....Do one gig with video and trust me you will have more biz.. I am moblie and would not have it any other way. Only thing I will say is you better have plenty of videos or you will feel a little out of place. It cost to be the boss and gettin into video will be much money and time....All of which I think has been worth it.....

bigmark, i don't do a lot of mobiles but i've done a few. so:
1.) Yes
2.) If I provide the video, I have a single projector. Normally I'm plugging into a bunch of their screens.
3.) Customers are kinda oblivious. It's more of a "setting the atmosphere" intangible that you get with video.
4.) Yes, all my mobile video gigs are usually at least double what I would normally get.

1. Yes, been doing this now for almost a year.
2. I would either bring my Da-Lite tripod or Fast-Fold screen. Depending on how much room I have to work with. I would use an Epson projector (not the best, but works well for my mobile gigs) I also bought a small little Genurator that I would use to plug in my projector and bought a Wireless transmitter to signal to the projector. For a clean set-up. So you don't see wires everywhere.
3. Yes. Especially for those who don’t like to dance. They can set their and enjoy the Visual show. I had people pull up their chairs and set along side the screen and watch it like they where at the theater. Was funny as hell, but was really happy they enjoyed it. Got lot's of compliments. It's kind of hard not to notice it when you have a 90" screen playing vidz. The only time I really don't think people notice, is at clubs. People dancing and drinking and don't really pay too much attion at the screens. Only when the club is just starting off they notice. They grab their drinks, set down and watch the show, but once it starts getting packed and jumping. They don't really bother to look.
4. My first two gigs with video, I didn't charge anything extra. I used my first two video gigs to promote it. I wanted to get people’s reaction and feed back. See if it would rejuvenate business and needed something to stand out from the rest of the mobile DJ’s. As long as you put in work and do a good job. You will definitely get more gigs and make more money. I would charge between $125-$150 hr with out vidz and charge $200hr with vidz.

1) Yes, every gig since it's been available
2) Brought my own screen and projector or plugged into house system
3) Yes, the eye candy gets their attention
4) Yes, usually an extra $1k to the bill or more if they want a bigger screen or LCD's.
Yes, the venue owners/managers always ask me for my business cards and say they'll refer clients.

Hey guys. Which or What kind of projector/screen do you recommend for Weddings or smaller club gigs? Average cost? Ever think of bringing a flat screen instead?
Appreciated.

Toshiba TDP-EW25U a short throw front & rear although I only use rear, I have with the Da-Lite Fast Fold. I have done the flat's have even done a few with one lcd. I suggest that if you do an audio party take a flat to show off your video after that gigs will be coming.

1. Have you used VSL at mobile gigs? Yes I have
2. How did you setup your video system? With a projector and screen if available. If not then a blank wall will do just fine...
3. Did customers really get excited or not even notice? Depends on what you play. I got some old school Marvin, Aretha, Isley, Temps, etc... and those folks love it... Today's generation is kinda numb to it... Now if it's at a b-day party or something along thoselines, it can kinda blow up the party nice...
4. Did you charge more money for the service, and has it brought you more business? Yeah I charge more but right now I'm at apoint where I want more people to see it so I'm doing it as often as I can with maybe only a $100-$150 upcharge...

Guys, you have to start charging more for video at your mobiles. Go and see how much it costs to rent a good projector and screen! And, that doesn't include someone operate it and provide content... Gotta work on up-selling your added features like video and lighting!

1...Yeah full video show from start to finish, started with projector but now stick
with flatscreens only, much better look.
2....like I said started with wall n projector then screen now only flatscreen best look to me
3 they love to see classics but I also make montages like if it's a sweet 16, I make an actual music video out of their pictures or old videos and that is a seperate charge, goes over big.
4 i don't really charge extra for video cause you want more people to see, hell I don't even tell tehm I have it and when they see it they get a surprise, inturn you are getting the resduals from the party guest..Microeconomics 101
help this helped you, if not sell crack!!!LMFAO!!!!

matt I will have to try wireless as I have not I would say I would try it this weekend but I am a little busy so I will get back at you on sometime next week. Projector is normally close by s-vid or RGB... Mac & PC depends on how I feel the PC is 17inches so I much rather use it but Since I paid more for the MBP I am trying to use it more it crashed on me last week at the very end of my party 4 hours long,,,,audio on on turntable just slowed down like it was being screwed.... Twice it did that only on left side and on my Mac at that glad for instant doubles.. Funny thing I have never had my pc laptop crash of of yet... Oh well....It will happen I know this. I plan on doing a demo to show just how good my pc is when I have time but I love riding my motorcycle so it will have to wait.......
FunkyRob I dont't most of the time (MONITER THE SCREEN)I choose my music without looking at video I use a midi to conrol special effects but you can use the sreen to look at it by just clicking on video and it will have a preview screen. I treat it as audio as I set cue points for all songs that I know I will play..Trust me you will see that you don't have to see anything when using SLV as long as your vids work like they are suppose to. YOu have the wave to look at.

microwave son. seriously. bypass the kid toys.
i'm not trying to be smug but wireless video transmission in consumer products is not even worth tinkering. in most areas you can get away with using consumer level products but when it comes to wireless video transmission either get some pro gear or be prepared for some frustration.

I've done video and people like it but no one really wants to pay for it. . . If you're going to do it for nothing then you'll make a lot by the amount of gigs you do but you'll also drive your market down! In which case you'll hurt others in the area "Don't be that guy". also have the right gear, if you're looking to this forum for help then you still need a lot of work. Go talk to a pro sound company and get an EAW sound system, then go talk to a lighting company and get some scanners or moving heads. For the projector get an www.Eiki.com
Investing the right amount of money will help you understand pricing.

It always cracks me up to hear people that do video saying they don't charge extra. Thats just plain dumb and will assure you will always be the low man in the ladder.
Spinning the latest music not only requires you to be a part of some record pool plus all the gear etc but when you throw video into the mixture not only does your cost go up for gear but handling video is WAY more time consuming the mp3's etc. But its like the saying goes you get what you pay for. There are a lot of kids who get laptops and think there dj's over night. Hell there is even now some software that auto mixes for people, lol.

for me, i started charging an extra $150 - $200 extra for now. some places where i was already at weekly, i just do it with out charging more. i don't wanna lose my gig, it gives me practice, and it gives them a chance to see how good the video mixing looks. when i get an offer to spin video's somewhere else for more money, they might be willing to pay me more to stay. but those are just clubs. i don't do too many mobiles anymore, but that one paid me $300 for an hour of video mixing. show up and play, they had everything set up (including what i asked for).

What companies are making mounts to connect a plasma/lcd screen to some sort of a truss unit?

i have a couple of VRXs and they impress in every way that i can think of, uhhm except for the price. im not very impressed with how expensive they are. matter of fact that pretty much sucks or i might have even more vrxs.
most impressed with power handling and sound output versus physical size.
but don't even attempt to run vrx without some competent way of managing frequency response of those crazy horns.

Tony cant read defenses and throws 3 interceptions a game,,,I'm glad they got Kita becasue if Tony keeps it up he will show him how to do it. The main reason I wanted to keep T.O. was MADDEN,,,, I play it and without a threat wide out I am going to be smashed on next years game. As far as rich not really as a matter of fact I wish I was. I do gigs save moeny and buy on ebay everything I brought has been second hand just about. I got the screen for 400 that included carrying case and the screen is front & rear. Go Cowboys....

yeah i will try to get some.
I really wanted to get a 42" but i didnt know if i have anymore room in my vehicle for it! I do all kinds of events and sometimes they give you very little room as well. So i fugure i can put these 4 monitors almost anywhere (truss mount on top of speakers) but I havent had any complaints about the screen size though. I am planning to do a rear projection system in the near future.
The only thing i dont like about the video is it sometimes takes away from people dancing as they just want to watch.
