BPM Read Out

RiceCube 1:55 AM 8 November 2004
I posted something about the way SSL handles BPM's but I didn't really get a good answer so I'll try posting in the Featured Suggestions.

I currently use Tag&Rename to edit the tags of my mp3's. The BPM's that I input get changed when I view the BPM's from SSL. For a future version, can you put in an option that allows you to turn off the automatic conversion that occurs right now? I want SSL to read and display the BPM's exactly the way I input them.

Also, I'm having another issue with my BPM's where I have some diplayed that are only 1 digit long. How do I fix this? Some of my BPM's are displayed at "8" or "9". I'm assuming it has something to do with the PCDJ BPM's but my tag editor has two different types of BPM's, the standard one which I can edit and the PCDJ BPM which I can't edit. How can I fix the BPM's so that they read properly? I can't just change in SSL because I don't know what the real BPM is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If an SSL mod could comment about the issue of preserving the original BPM, that'd be great. Thanks.

RiceCube I think, I also faced the same senario. Is the BPM information change to zero when you loading mp3s to SSL deck.
and I also noticed that two decimal BPM information change to five decimal after loading to SSL.

Im using tag&rename and mixmesiter BPM analyzer
RiceCube 3:35 AM 8 November 2004
Actually no. My BPM's don't turn to zero. Some of them turn into 1 digit or 4 digit BPM's though. Also, I'm now noticing that when I go back into Tag&Rename, SSL has changed the BPM's of the mp3's that I played!!! SSL is really screwing around with all of the BPM information that I spent hours upon hours on. Is there any way to turn this off? I can't have SSL changing the BPM information. I spent so much time inputting them and now I have to go back and redo the BPM's for the files that I play with SSL =[

Please fix this BPM bug so that my BPM's are left the way I input them.

what version of SSL are you using? version 1.2 should not change id3 tags of your files....you can find it here: www.scratchlive.net
RiceCube 4:00 AM 8 November 2004
I'm using Version 1.2. At least that's what it says in the bottom right hand corner of the UI. "Version 1.2 (1218)". So it should NOT be changing my BPM Id3 tags?
thxj 4:15 AM 8 November 2004
anyway SSL is changing BPM tags. Today I've uploaded mp3s to SSL team ftp site. also I've noticed, it's changeing the BPM decimal points.

I'm using 1218 version. pervious versions there are no issues for BPM like this.
RiceCube 4:22 AM 8 November 2004
Version 1218 is the first one that I've used. So in the previous versions, the BPM's were not altered by SSL? So it seems that they changed something for version 1.2. Can the developers either change it back the way it was or allow us to choose between the two ways that BPM's are handled? I can't use SSL until this is fixed because I don't want to screw up any more of my BPM's. It took me way too long to go through all of the songs that I played with SSL and re-edit the BPM's.

Hi thxj, thanks for sending us your problem files. The problem that you reported with the first file (BPMs being read as zero) has been fixed and will be available in Scratch LIVE 1.3.

great :) wow.. what speedy bug fixing.

RiceCube. Can you please send us an MP3 that is only displaying one digit of the BPM? See the post at the top of the help section for details on how to send us files. Thanks.

Done. I really think it would help if you guys got in touch with FlatFeetPete and ask him how he structured his Final Scratch Record Box Editor application. The way he made his application handle BPM's is genius.

I just realized a better way to fix this problem. Have SSL read BPM's the way that Traktor does. I know that mentioning something good about Traktor/FS probably isn't what should be on these boards...but it would really help me out. There are two different types of BPM's stored in my mp3's. There's the standard BPM and the PCDJ BPM which is formatted like this: xxx.xx

The reason why my BPM's are messed up in SSL is because SSL is reading the PCDJ BPM's. Traktor reads the normal BPM and just formats it for their system. Most people edit the regular BPM since that's much easier to do than changing the PCDJ BPM.

Can SSL be changed so that 1) it reads the regular BPM field and 2) so that it doesn't change my BPM tag every time I play a song?

One more idea. This might be the best way to fix BPM's. There should be two BPM fields. One can be called S-BPM (for Serato) or D-BPM (for dynamic), the other BPM field should be the standard one. SSL currently reads from the PCDJ BPM (xxx.xx) so that the dynamic BPM can be calculated when the speed of the turntable is changed. The current BPM field should be changed and a new BPM field should be added that reads the standard BPM field and keeps the BPM exactly as it is read. Here's an example of how this would help.

Say you have a song and you use Mixmeister BPM or PCDJ to calculate the BPM of the song. You get 105.83 for the PCDJ BPM (DBPM). In my system I would edit the standard BPM and make it 106. SSL currently only reads the 105.83 and rounds it to 106. Some people might want their BPM to display 4 or 5 digits the way PCDJ displays their BPM's. I want the ability to edit my own BPM's in case PCDJ reads an mp3 incorrectly. This way people that aren't having any problems with their BPM's can still use SSL without any changes except they would use the DBPM field. Then you can add a regular BPM field for users like me that want to use their own BPM's. Some of my tracks change tempo and so my BPM's for these tracks look like this xxx-xxx (095-120). SSL can't handle BPM's like that.

If you want to see how this works in a real application, try Tag&Rename. In my opinion that's the best software to edit tags for DJ's because it displays both the regular BPM and the PCDJ BPM.

just for the record, if you guys do change the bpm part of the id3 tag ssl is reading or whatever, please make it an option..... my itunes bpm fields are reading perfect and if you changed to a different bpm field, Id hate to have to redo all my bpms
