New Macbook vs old Macbook Pro?

nemix 5:13 AM - 14 February, 2009
Not too sure what to do, I have a asus laptop right now and am pretty sure it won't run VSL the way I want when 1.1 is released. If i buy a mac should I go with a new macbook because of the faster FSB and ddr3 ram or an older macbook pro? If I did happen to get the older macbook pro what are the specs you guys would run with?

I'd like to run video at 2500-3000 bitrate and i don't think the stock 2ghz macbook would do this. Ideas?
skinnyguy 7:18 AM - 14 February, 2009
i'd go with the pro. firewire.

So what specs should I be looking for to run vid at 2500-3000 bitrate?

old pro all the way

last years model. 2.4ghz, 2-4gb of ram, 200-250gb hard drive, 256mb video card. you can get this refurbished from mac store for about $1250.

Mac store front are cheaper than the site prices? They're 1600-1700 on their site

How about the MA610LL macbook pro, still has 7 months of warranty too...all for 1000.

Would it do what I need it to?
nemix 12:00 AM - 16 February, 2009
and the specs for that mac

don't know if the FSB speed would be too low, it's a late 2006 model

Nemix, with all these different enhancements coming out for Serato, it would be wise to get a machine not less than 2.4Ghz (Intel Core 2 DUO), 4GB RAM.

Well I just found last years model macbook refurbed for 1480.00 out the door. (the one with the dual link dvi) This should do all that I need it to. Went a little over on budget but hopefully it's worth it :)

You meant Macbook Pro right? $1480 for last yrs mb is a bit high! lol
nemix 9:27 PM - 23 February, 2009
yea MBP, everythings running fine. Think most of my vids are around 3000 kbs and they all run good through ME. If serato would ever release 1.1 I'd try VSL out lol

My company has 3 of these and I have not had the first hiccup or problem. I also just bought the new MBP for 2499. I can not see any difference using VSL at all between the old and new. I also have a friend who has a 2006 MBP with an ATI video card and it works well to. The melt transition is not good but I wouldn't have a problem doing a live show with it. I am interested in hearing from anyone why the new unibody is any better running VSL. Don't just give performance specs. describe where the old MBPs are having issues and how the new ones are going to eliminate the issues

Why is the 8600 video card bad? there are several shootouts with macbook pros with 8600 and 9600 cards with top games and most of the time the 8600 out preformed the 9600. I have both and not defending either one. I just want some facts as to why one is better than the other that is specific to running VSL
Millz 4:36 AM - 25 February, 2009
I was reading up on the failure rate of the 8600, search this forum...

thats a good point. I have 2 laptops with me at all times because anything can happen. I don't want to be at a show with a failed laptop no matter what. I decided that when one night I had quit early because my power supply had a short and the laptop died the last 30 mins of a gig
