FCP Sessions FOR THE PEOPLE (Recording from 2009-02-08)

a-swift 2:46 AM - 14 February, 2009
Watch it in your browser (sweet if you have QT Pro, you can save it after the download)
www.vjaswift.com

Or download the file directly (a little over 1GB)
www.vjaswift.com

A half size version will be posted soon, and RTSP streaming links will be posted soon (sweet for being able to instantly click around in the file with no buffering required)
Demon 3:48 AM - 14 February, 2009
Sick! I'm watching now. Yall are super fresh for this.
Demon 3:56 AM - 14 February, 2009
Nik39, is that you? That program looks amazing man. For the people by the people! You gonna make a Mac version?

P.S. I love that your kid interrupted in the session. Always gotta handle that baby biz.
a-swift 4:09 AM - 14 February, 2009
Demon you must have a monster Internet connection. I have a feeling most people won't watch until the half size is uploaded. The full size does look crispy clean though!
Funkytownstopsix 4:22 AM - 14 February, 2009
Swift wouldnt it load faster if you had made it an flv instead of mp4.
a-swift 4:23 AM - 14 February, 2009
ATTENTION: Smaller Files For Faster Dowload!!!

Watch it in your browser:
www.vjaswift.com

Download Directly
www.vjaswift.com

RTSP Streaming (Use Quicktime, VLC or anything that understands RTSP)
rtsp://streaming.vjaswift.com/streaming.vjaswift.com/fcpSessions-2009-
02-08-720x438.mp4

This is a half resolution file, the clarity won't be as clear but it will stream even on a crappy internet connection. THe RTSP stream will let you skip and seek around very easily without downloading the entire file.
Demon 4:27 AM - 14 February, 2009
I'm watching in browser. Got QTP so imma download. Good looking man, great info!

No, the only thing that would make it load faster is a smaller file (lower bitrate) or use streaming to eliminate downloading the file and saving to disk, see link above.

Native flash format inside an FLV container is not as clear as H.264 at the same bitrate. H.264 will look better at the same bitrate. This is why the new flash player can work with H.264 in FLV containers. They didn't add support for H.264 in FLV containers because it looks worse. It looks better at equal bitrates.

If I did encode these to FLV, I'd use H.264 in the FLV file, which means basically the same bits in a different container format, and then it wouldn't be iPhone & iPod & AppleTV compatible so I don't see a whole lot of value in using FLV.

It works on Windows and Mac using the same installer :) You can hook up Windows and Mac computer in any combination to help the encoding process. Add computers on the fly, remove them on the fly. Your choice :)

I want to add Linux support as well, but that is lower priority right now. If anyone wants to help testing send me a PM please.

I just did a 10 minute webex with DJ Pyro on how to tag 2,000 music videos with one command. We actually wrote the script and ran it on a bunch of videos. I should have recorded it. Maybe I'll do one by myself and record it.
Dj-Pyro 10:19 PM - 14 February, 2009
yeah, just make sure you send the file that has created by DJ Pyro to everyone :)
a-swift 7:03 PM - 26 February, 2009
there's also an iPhone compatible version of the sessions. works over wifi!
sk IOI 9:52 PM - 26 February, 2009
thanks for this A-Swift....

much appreciated
djpuma_gemini 10:11 PM - 26 February, 2009
Can u show me this how to tag all videos with one command
Dj-Pyro 12:10 AM - 27 February, 2009
lol, yeah swift. I'm still doing it wrong. Should've recorded that webex we did.

if you're not a command line kinda guy like pyro, then my methods won't help you. i can show you how to do some stuff but then the first time you need to do it on your own, you'll be lost.

but yes, i tag my entire video library with one single command.
djpuma_gemini 4:46 AM - 27 February, 2009
dos yes, unix no.
a-swift 7:55 PM - 1 March, 2009
its the first sunday of the month today and no session is happening.

Booooooo!
DJ Dan-E 4:06 AM - 2 March, 2009

Dj-Pyro 9:02 AM - 2 March, 2009
Yeah, I wanted a Motion, Ableton, and Atomic Parsley class.
DJ SHY 2:51 PM - 2 March, 2009

DJPauly 5:55 AM - 4 March, 2009
A-Swift, this is incredible! I just watched the tutorial and it was great, look forward to more. I have no prior video editing and was able to at least start working with FCP express. This is what the community and forums are about.

hey thanks pauly. i actually thought it was a pretty good session too. i'm kinda disappointed we didnt stick to the first sunday of every month like i thought we were gonna do.

i wanted some other guys to take over so it didn't seem like it was the a-swift show too much. but they didn't :-(

Nik39, great job on that application. Are you going to make it available to the public? If so, any idea when?

Sure, but most likely it won't be for free. I have explained in the video why, how much etc ;) When...? I planned to release it October... 2008. So, uhm... well I am still working on it :) Will keep you posted.
F The 1 Man Disco 11:02 PM - 4 March, 2009
Great, keep me posted.

a-swift I have to give you props on your live video set. It's very streamlined and I like the conga remix(the original still gets people movin on it's own)Relating to this thread I think it is generous of you to encourage others by sharing tips and educating with tutorials and setting a professional standard.I think we always need to have cutting edge tools to keep up with entertaining those who still take the time out to support live Djs & Vjs.

hey thanks defcutdon. another session will be coming soon. i was hoping it would be a sony vegas session but since i'll probably be doing the next session, you guys will have to deal with what *i* want to talk about. most likely, we'll do a simple project in apple's Motion. it'll be a topic everyone can get with,... "how to make your dj logo in Motion".

let's hope it comes soon.
Funkytownstopsix 4:20 PM - 5 March, 2009
I have been messing with motion a little and it seams prety easy until you have to move stuff. I now see how they make the extra video screens and have them moving all of the place. So a class with motion would be the shit...Put me on the list....You are much appreciated A-swift,,did you get that drive installed I saw one last night at best buy and thought humm I might need to upgrade but will wait till I hear how it goes for you.

i actually held off on installing my 500GB drive into my laptop for a couple of reasons.

1.) i changed from external 500GB backup drive to a network share that backs up ALL computers in my house to one network drive. It's 8TB. The first time I upgraded this laptop from 200GB drive to 320GB drive, the restore of my system to the new 320GB drive was really easy since my backup was on a firewire drive. Time machine just reformats the new drive with all the info and everything is exactly how it was before the upgrade, just more space.

I wanted to make sure that time machine was able to restore a complete system from a NETWORK backup to a blank hard drive. I tested this 2 days ago on my non-gig laptop and the network restore to a fresh hard disk worked perfectly. So now I'm ready.

2.) I was saving up pennies for a new video camera. I have the camera now. I need it to shot footage for the new demo. But I had an idea to actually video record the hard drive upgrade. I thought it might be helpful for anyone who wants to upgrade their own hard drive but they are not sure how it's done.

So that's it. The hard drive will probably get upgraded this weekend after the gigs.
DJPauly 4:32 AM - 9 March, 2009
I had a question on Streamclip. I have the latest version and did not see an option to export as "Pro Res 422" as recommended by A-swift. I exported mine as FCP Uncompressed 8-bit and for a 4 min video, the file is about 5 gigs. My (newer) Mac has a tough time playing all that. Are there other suggestions for good quality?

A second question: I am only using FCE, thus do not have the handy compressor. I don't feel that quicktime gives the best quality compression for an mp4. Are there any other ways to do this to get high quality?

A-swift - thanks again for this clip. I'll be posting a video edit for some feedback soon.
D-Twizzle 4:43 AM - 9 March, 2009
You need FC Pro/Studio to get the ProRes codec. You can try DV instead of Uncompressed to save some space and add some speed to your previews, but you lose a tad bit of quality
a-swift 4:49 AM - 9 March, 2009
Twizzle is correct. ProRes422 is included with FCP Studio. if you are using the reconnect to media workflow like me, then your edit file codec and quality doesn't really matter. Use whatever codec is fast, like DV. However, I wouldn't recommend DV if you are not using reconnect to media. The DV codec is crap really. Your colors will be crushed through multiple DV encodings.

If you don't have compressor, then I'm going to recommend an uncompressed file out of FCP and use something to encode that to mp4.
