Hey people,

I'm interested in what you people mix like, do with music etc. Also some feedback or tricks you can do in Itch would be well situated in this forum. So i'll start and post one of my own mixes. Uploaded it on Zshare, just ignore the adds and either download or stream it.

Nice, checked m out. LeGitlin, some things could be tighter mixed and the entry points dont always fit nicely with the songs..but the same can be said of me on occasion. Any chance anyone had a listen to mine?

hi Giro just listened to your mix and some nice tunes in there, some dirty electro base, i like that, TIP- bring in the next track gradually not so much boomph here it is practice with the equalisers fading in and out mids highes and lows give more of a smooth mix if you get my drift, practise also with loops. the mix had energy tho and built ok, craaazy end to it lol.

some old skool classics in there mate, i like the old skool tunes, i have every single street sounds electro album ever produced. breakers revenge is one of my personel faves, makes me want to get out a roll of vinyl and throw some shapes haha. all in the mind tho as the body is passed it lol.
first time i heard it was back in the day whilst watchin beat street (battle at foxy's i think...) remember that classic movie.
thats it im on a hip hop old skool trip now, gonna siv thru the old tunes when i get home lol.

i gave it a listen and it is pretty good. as far as being ready for a party. no, you are never ready for a party till you start doing them. i will give you advise as to make a mix about 15 mins or so to play while you get comfortable in your surroundings. you will be bother and pestered by the people at the party. they will ask for songs but remember you are the dj not them :) relax have fun and learn from your screw ups. walk away knowing your next party has to be atleast 2 times better than that one.

hi mate, listened to your current mix, some good tunes in there and you def have good taste in music, i thought the mixing was pretty descent for only doing it for 2 months, there were some rough patches but you knew that already right and as long as you know where your weaknesses are you can only get better right. good work man, keep it up
what were you mixing on? VCI and itch??? or something else? im guessing some other software may of been used??.
TIP, try more melodic mixing, ie mixing in key or just above or below key... i.e if one tune is in key 4A bring next one in at 5A or 3A or stay in same key of 4A. for energy boost go to 6A, dont worry if you dont know what i mean, your already on your way and you will pick this up as you go.

tried that mate, wouldnt load it, it said could not import as quick time is not installed.
im a bit dubious of installing software on this machine as i use it for my VCI and its tempromental at best o times,

you def have the skills but you already know this right ;), some nice mixing there mate, i shouldnt worry about doing a party, my only worry for you would be your tune selection may not be to everyones taste, some deep shit in there mate, try more up tempo stuff but keeping that dirty electro feel that you have a taste for(last tune on there was sweet) try sourcing more like that, i hear what kraal is saying about you being the dj but dont forget your also there to entertain, remember that.
having said all that very nice work mate.

Thanks for the feedback man. I definitely appreciate it. Ya, I just told some friends I would post a mix so it was more of a rush.. and they're pretty much all brand new tracks so I was going at it a little blind and winging it.

The one suggestion I could offer would to maybe let the tracks run a little more over each other (track permitting) every once in a while. But that's only 2 months of experience talking haha

Dont take this as me whingeing lol as i assure u its not just would like your comments further and maybe any others that have listened to my mix can chip in to but can you elaborate on your quote above about letting tracks run over? my mixing style is to always blend one track into the other sometimes most of the time i will have both tracks running for around a minute or more, i always attempt to mix in key so i can have tracks mixing together for longer periods.
the more advice/comments we all receive can only make us better at our craft so thanks guys.

I recently felt comfortable enough to give it a go and record a promo mix for myself on the VCI-300. There's no scratching or crazy tricks on this one. Just a few well placed loops and cue points for easier phrasing on my end. I put it together from some recent percussive tech and deep house I picked up last month. It's a slow building groover. I hope you enjoy cleaning your apartment/house to this. That's what I usually do with mixes lol.

there is plenty of software do a web search look at other forums. you found the itch forum so find other software and ask questions about their software

so i listened your mix, here my opinion:

is there's 5 passages ? because it's hard to distinguish all passages....because for me this mix is very very very good.

1° passage: very very good metrics and equalizing. for me it's 9/10 (not 10/10 because i don't like very much the overlap of voices...for me, the first song should be remove before..but this is subjective ! Because after a while the voice: "one more time...uh...ah.....one more time uh...ah..."is a little tiring... i am punctilious, i know ;-)

2° passage: perfect beatmatch, good eq, for me it's 100% ok, nice technics.

3° passage: good eq, nice transition, 100% agree ! i like it.

4° passage: nothing to say, simply perfect.

5° passage: again, nothing to say !!

Like your style, like your music...for me it's a very good mix and I challenge anyone to say otherwise ! good work !

I agree, I wouldn't know what to describe some of the tunes in there but I like the "feel-good" vibe and I agree with DJ Whites comments, minus the overlapping of voices cus i actually enjoy that....did you get the dancefloor hooligan from steve lawyer lol??? i remember on radio 538 dennis ruyer was calling him that haha - lawler is the man though - cheeers, i'm going to have a wild mix up on sunday

dont beat yourself up mate, dj's are there own worse critics, myself included, the important thing is you have good taste in music and you mix it well, i much rather prefer listening to this than some awful tunes being mixed together & sounding like theres a bunch of horses passing when trying to beat match etc.

Here is a one hour house set. There are a few skips in the recording. My computer is lower than the minimum requirements for use with the VCI-300 and Itch. When I as recording, I noticed that the waveforms would pause for a second whenever I loaded a track or when my laptop's fan came on, even if I set my usb buffer back to 5. I didn't here them when live so I suspect that that was the cause.

analysing Mixes ? Music is a feeling ... you don't also analyse "love"...
Perfect Mix? I like to hear some mistakes and errors, because listening to "machines" is boring.

If you feel good, you mix good as well.

Most of the DJ's are fading the track into each other - if it's a 4 on the floor beat.
If someone in the track says "Stop" - so stop the track and make a cut ...
There are a lot of ways how you can perform.

I disagree, the art of blending one tune into another is an essential skill in the armour of a CLUB dj, maybe not so much for a wedding disco type dj but certainly for a top nightclub, maybe im wrong, maybe nightclubbers like to hear good tunes simply faded in and out but i'd bet my house on it that they dont. i doubt top clubs like cream and gatecrasher etc would entertain the fading in/out type of mixing...

Hey everyone!

I have been a dj for many years but I dj for very different types of occasions then most of you I think...weddings, club/bar, corporate events. I was very hesitant in posting because I have a feeling that most of you would think that the type of music that I play is not very good : ( It's VERY mainstream stuff and some big songs that I would be mixing right now (for my bar) are Black Eyed Peas, Soulja Boy Tell Em, The Dream, Jamie Foxx, etc...stuff you would hear on your local Top 40/Hip Hop station. (Well, at least here in the U.S....west coast/Seattle area)

I understand it's not too creative but I really have fun doing it and people seem to really enjoy it! Not sure if there is anyone on this board that mixes this type of music but I'd love to hear your mix!

been going after electro with old skool beats when purchasing.
on the old skool piano classic i have to say jj tribute by asha is one of my all time faves, and bizzare inc/playing with knives, oh and love decade/so real and bro's in rythmn/peace and harmony and and and etc etc lol, i could go on haha

i was big into PE and also electro i,e bambataa, world class wreckin cru, unknown dj and the likes, i love my VCI but also wouldnt mind owning the NS7 (lot o money though).
the VCI though i have to say is a wicked machine.

all i can say mate is that must of been SOOOOME biscuit induced vacation you were on lol.
dark as the pits of hell ;-D
tight mixing mate and some thumping beats in there which had my head nodding, my only critique would be that my ears were wanting to hear some lighter synths, what i mean by that is that the mix was kind of thumping along throughout at the lower end of the music scale, to take the mix to the next level i feel (and this is my opinion only) it needed some upper tunes in there just to give direction and lighten the mood, take the mix listener on a journey.

Btw I advise soundcloud for hosting your mixes. You can follow people making tracks, upload your own tracks and dj sets for free and they can be streamed without annoying adds... It's also free for the basic package which give you around 3 to 4 uploads a month. IMO it's pretty sweet.

I think the timed comments on soundcloud are the bombshit, there is no better way to get or give meaninful comment about mixing than that...

added you as well TJ... when you upload tracks you can define them to be either public or private. when set to private you can then say who can specifically see them... which I find great during the production process of a track

Got a soundcloud account sorted out a couple of weeks back - really can't recommend it enough.

If you don't already know soundcloud has integration with facebook so you can post your mixes on your wall and your fans can just hit play right from there.

Only just got an account on this forum but i've had a vestax since jan, here are some of the mixes i've made with it.

fitty, good stuff. im not really into hard hip-hop, but it is good... im about a half hour into your mix right now. i may listen to the whole thing... ive noticed the sound volume very erratic.. like very up and down... gets louder for a second then normal, or quiet for a sec then normal.

at some point your scratching seemed out of place. no concrete examples just at time i was like 'what is that in here for'
also your song selection I suggest the same thing i suggest to a lot of club dj's expand your music vocabulary for and hour mix all the songs sounded a little too simular.

I will be putting a mix up soon so feel free to crit it when i do. one of the best ways of learning is seeing what works and what doeasnt in other people's mixes

@kraal now thats what I needed to hear! I've been working on my scratching, that dont mean I have too just throw it in all over the place. lol My song selection I must say have been tunnel vision at the club also. I just gave up a 7 day work week down to 5 days so I can work on that which is my main problem at the moment. Back to the lab!

Is there a functional purpose for scratching during a set? I don't play hip-hop/rnb etc.. so never really been involved in the scratch game.. I have a feeling it actually has a purpose based around being able to make transitions between songs with wide differences in BPM? Or is it just a sound like playing a live instrument during your set?

Not trying to be offensive I just don't understand what its used for but do like the sound of it when done well - think of me as the idiot half brother who means no harm.

Thought so... got hired for a gig recently. The guy listened to my *electo* demo - hired me then on the night started asking for hip-hop and RnB, i tried to help out coz i am a really-nice-guy but was totally surprised by the range of BPMs from like 90 to 125 or more. Made me realise that if i knew how to scratch I could play song A after song B... despite it being like 30% faster.

i dont think scratch DJs mix songs that are 30 bpms off... even with scratching, you still want the tempo to match. scratching is in my opinion not so much a transitional tool as it is a sound and instrumental too. like you said, it makes the turntables/controller like an instrument. one of my bar owners calls my equipment instruments.. i think its pretty much because he is albanian and the translation might lose something... but DJ equipment should be treated like an instrument... and how you play it defines you as a musician in that sense.

Here's a house mix of mine. I do some instant doubles, reverses, baby scratching on track start, etc... Nothing really fancy but I like the way it sounds and it feels natural on the VCI-300 and Itch. I haven't upgraded to the new version of Itch that keeps an accurate track listing of the tracks that were actually played so there's no tracklisting. Sorry. Let me know what you like and don't like. I always try and put a lot of soul and style into my mixes to make it something unique that you wouldn't hear just listening to the tracks.

While I love mixing electro house and hip-hop too, there are a ton of EH mixes on here and I need more scratching practice before posting a Hip hop mix up.

The only feedback that I've give is that you shouldn't transition over vocals, it interrupts the flow of both the outgoing and incoming songs - and takes the crowd out of their groove (especially if they're singing with the outgoing tune).

Hi people here is a mix I done on my VCI which I have owned for about three weeks.
It's an old school progressive trance mix i know its not perfect, I have probs balancing the output levels when i mix tracks. Any advice on this would be really helpful. If you download hope you enjoy.

two thing I do to bring in my track at the right level.

1. watch your line meters. loud parts of the song should match where that are peaking. skip forward when you are prelistening and check where the loudest part of your next song peaks.

2. trust the autogain. sometimes the less you monkey with your levels the better it will sound. autogain will do a pretty good job for most tracks. at least a good enough job to allow you to bring in your track and then tweak as you mix.

Despite the horrible bugs, it's very inspiring and the pitch shift is the best one on the market.

You can refine and polish very well the mix from within the software, with plugins, and automate everything to perfection.

DJ Fitty--- ok here is the advice i can give you. when you have hip hop fans it is mainly the chorus that the crowd get hyped for so don't cut it off. i mean play verse1 then the full chorus the verse2 and mix out during or after the chorus.

and do kill the chorus at the 'high point' example for California love by 2pac. the 'shake shake' part is a high point to cut it off will subconsciously piss off people.

another example in your PE shut em down to Nas got yourself a gun. the intro from NAS could of played nicely under 'the chorus chant off 'shut-em down, shut em down'

the following transition to one to the next one.--- nas saying 'they shootin' then slam over to Jay-z saying 'one to the next one' will get a positive reation even due to there was a big beef between jay-z and nas so again cats that are really into hiphop will get an extra gratification when they hear that....

to sum it up watch your mix points. play the chorus at least thru the 'sing along point' and mix in song before the next chorus.

Such as red cafe's tap it. among others or baltimore club music. I am having a hard time trying to compile a list of good jersey club music. not also to be confused with the jersey house music of the early 90's which i am also looking for. that soulful house music from artist such as frankie knuckles.

i also pop and lock.... you know i play all kinds of music and no longer even look at things as type... but yes i do play bmore and artist like frankie knuckles just not complete sets of any style.

most templates look the same...a lot are standard adobe templates within dreamweaver ;)

thanks kraal. I never even opened my dreamweaver yet. now i know. I play all types of music as well. like to be versatile. Got into playing brazilian funk, i don't understand it, but it is nice booty music, like reggaeton. Well i hope to have my site up soon and i will post my mixes and look forward to your advice. Grum & Cassius both put out some pretty funky stuff also, the stuart price mix of scissor sisters is hot! Cabin Crew, Swivel Hips, David Borkmann also have some good stuff.. I would suggest going to beatport and searching on the genre indie dance / nu-disco and you will find a bunch more...
