Testers Needed (VideoSL 4 PC)

Culprit 12:20 AM - 18 January, 2009
Ok guys, here is the plan. I have a new media coder preset. This one uses ffmpeg instead of x264 with some changes I made to the profile. I want some people who have minor encoding experience to test this out on their pc's using vsl, and tell me if it has improved performance or not. I learned alot disecting mainconcept the past 4 hours. I would prefer trying to encode vobs at the moment. I use promo only dvds.

i also downloaded the latest ffmpeg and replaced it in my mediacoder/codec folder.

I will test this tomorrow. Any reasons for the h264 to ffmpeg switch?
Culprit 8:43 PM - 18 January, 2009
ffmpeg does h.264 but with a variable birate, which is how mainconcept does their encoding as well (i think..) =]

How good is this running? I know that I am having trouble running two h.264 streams at the same time with VSL.
Culprit 3:33 PM - 29 January, 2009
in all honesty i cannot tell because vsl runs my vidz at h.264 on 1.8.3 / 1.0.2 perfectly with no stuttering. I have to test this on another laptop which I will be borrowing from a family member tomorrow. It runs ffmpeg h264 w/ variable stream.

Nik did you try out the preset and it still is having problems?
nik39 1:08 PM - 30 January, 2009
Hm, the latest version of MC+your preset crashes for me. :(
Culprit 11:55 PM - 30 January, 2009
odd.. ok going to try and figure out if i can make a preset using another ffmpeg gui program.
nik39 1:27 PM - 31 January, 2009
Mabye it works for others.

Any feedback?
Culprit 11:34 PM - 31 January, 2009
Ok, here is my port over from mediacoder to winff. winff is an ffmpeg gui program, which is really nice. Here is the link.

winff.org

Here is my pc testing preset, have had some mixed results, mostly good.
I suggest opening extra options and enabeling deinterlace and 2-pass encoding.

would love some follow up from my fellow pc users. I have been testing with promo only vobs.

Crap.

I think I owe someone an apology.

VSL is able to play back two h.264 streams at the same time, but not using the default QT decoder. ME performs a little better using the QT decoder. However, if you use Perian (which I am doing) than both apps play two h.264 streams fine. Now why did I say before that VSL is not able to playback two streams if I am using Perian?
It happened b/c I update PErian w/o properly (erm.. not at all) reading the release notes. With the recent 1.1.3 version Perian however defaults h.264 to the QT decoder because there were some reports bla bla. Anyway, if I revert back to 1.1.2 *or* I manually tell Perian not to default to QT standard decoder both apps play two streams fine.

Sorry for the confusion. Sorry to Serato (esp. Nathan) and ME/Inklen.

Well you got it to work tho! Thats a good thing.

Here are my testing results with my latest preset using winff

Success - Alienware M9750 () h264 (vob promo only rips) streams run nice and clean, with a slight lag upon load up of the files. For some reason, when loading files using s-video, the secondary screen flickers, but when using VGA, no problems what-so-ever. XP Pro SP 3 (32bit) & Vista Ultimate SP 1 (64bit). This laptop features two 512mb dedicated video cards (non sli of course) Nvidia M7950 GTX, 4 gigs of ram. Dual Core Intel Processor 2.0 ghz.

Failure - Toshiba Satellite A20 laptop () Can successfully load two h264 streams, but with major lag. Playback is fine, no problems playing the actual videos together, but after about 30 seconds it starts to lag a bit, when I load another h264 file, the program lags alot. Output is fine. XP SP2. This laptop features an x1400 ATI Video card 256mb (128 shared / 128 dedicated) video card, 4 gigs of ram, Core2duo 1.86ghz

Success - Dell Precision PWS390 (Desktop) () Works flawless, no problems what-so-ever. Running Windows XP PRO SP3, 4 gigs ram, Intel Core 2 6300 (1.86ghz) ATI Fire-GL V7200 256mb dedicated video card.

If anyone has tried this preset, please post your results.

Sounds like your tv out isn't hardware accelerated.

Hey Itchie, I think it has something to do with my laptop, not the actual software. It does this with regular mp4's playing in quicktime. There is a bios update that might solve this solution.

Then again, the mac does not have this problem.. so meh =]
