Capo Status 2:24 AM - 16 January, 2014
I have been Dj'ing at a spot where I can't play the newest ratchet-ness or hood music that is out, It has led me to dig into my crates and find late 90's and early 2000 bangers. I know I am not the only one that is going through this so I'm starting a thread! Post your hottest late 90's and early 2000 classics that gets your crowd going!! I will post mine tomorrow so that I am also contributing.

You stated that you were going to post a list and didn't but expected others to. This sounds like a bunch of other dudes that have done the same because they were either lazy or didn't know the music and wanted others to do the work for them. You posted and I will apologize for my comment.

you could look thru all the itunes best of 98-2005, look at charts, google extensively, etc etc, and then give a list of maybe your top 100. then ask what it looks like you are missing, otherwise we dont know what style or region you may be missing.

most people diss this post because with the tools available at this point it would be very easy to assemble 2-500 song over a few weeks. maybe ask for some overlooked hits or anthems for regions or cities. but just late 90s to early 2000s, we could be here forever posting the same thing.

How are you a DJ if you don't know music from this era?
DjCity 7:40 PM - 10 February, 2014
I have 2 created dedicated to 90 ' early 2000 ' joints.

1 St for hip hop and the other is for R&B

To me, this is the time period where the lines between hip hop and R&B started to blurr.

It's when they started saying Mary J Blige is hip hop.

I'm sorry but B.D.P. Is hip hop. Mary is R&B!
3rdCoastTexan 7:42 PM - 10 February, 2014
It also depends on what region you are in. Places like New Orleans, Miami, Houston, Memphis, Chicago, Dc and LA have their own sub genres of music that arent played in other places.

Damn autospell.

I never understood why people would list ONLY the artist without the song title in threads like this. Considering many artist have very large libraries, I don't understand how this is helpful. Or am i missing something ?

i think you are over simplifying it, if a person does not know what the actual "bangers" are the artist will only point them in a general direction. The term "banger" is very specific, you will need to know the music in order to pick them out.

bangers are generally the most popular vids or songs. at least for a noob that would ask this question. what was actually 'banging' as far as album cuts, is for old folks, the most popular dl's and videos are what people are gonna wanna hear 15-20 years later.
pdidy 10:31 AM - 28 March, 2015
Quote:

well i put the theory to a test and in most cases the actual banger was not the most popular record. So sure it leads you in the right direction but in no way does this method help without adding more fillers or tracks you will never need to your library as apposed to actual bangers.

So again, If you do not already know the music this method will not identify what that specific track is even if you download the top 10 by the artist.

well if there is a ballad in the top 10 songs or a slow song of course. but for the most part it could/would work.

heres 2pac for example

outside of dear mama(if you cant tell thats a club banger, you are just an idiot), you would be fine if you played his best selling hits.

I tested some (not all) artist from this list that still have actual Banger tracks that work in 2015......Some of these artists have more than one track that qualifies as a banger but how is the unfamiliar dj to know this ?
Nas - banger = hate me now - www.youtube.com
eric b rakim - banger - I Know you Got Soul - www.youtube.com
Keith Murray - banger - Special Delivery (the remix), Fatty Girl, Home Alone - www.youtube.com
Notorious BIG - banger - too many to identify - www.youtube.com
2Pac - banger - California Love,Keep Ya Head Up,I Get Around,Hit 'Em Up- www.youtube.com
Fat joe - banger - What's Love, Lean Back - www.youtube.com
Naughty by Nature - banger - Hip Hop Hooray,OPP, Uptown Anthem - www.youtube.com
Gang Star - banger - Code Of The Streets, mass appeal - www.youtube.com

Now these are examples of songs that passed the most popular test and did not have other hits that qualified as bangers......
Digital Underground - banger - Humpty Dance - pass
Black Sheep - banger - The Choice Is Yours - pass
House of Pain- banger - Jump Around - Pass

But how is the unfamiliar DJ to know that there are no others ?
Should he download the top 10 of these artists equaling 30 tracks in order to guarantee he gets the 3 required ?

The problem remains that he still can not identify which tracks are the bangers and he can potentially add 100+ garbage tracks to his library :(

well if there is a ballad in the top 10 songs or a slow song of course. but for the most part it could/would work.

Technically yes it works....... but hundreds of useless tracks will be the side effect.

most people would look at youtube, amazon and itunes maybe check out some youtube vids of dj's, use the resources of the internet. or just ask pdidy.

you realize that these are young/inexperienced djs not brain dead zombies on walking dead.

All of the tracks you listed are massive tracks, if you cant tell california love is a banger by taking 5 minutes to type 2pac into youtube, you should hang it up
DJ Art Pumpin Payne 4:04 PM - 3 April, 2015
I agree with Pdiddy - remember I'm old but off the top of my head I couldn't remember a "banger" or popular song at first glance by the following from that list...

East Flatbush Project, Gravediggaz, The Roots (without Badu), Illegal, All City. Heltah Skeltah, Big Noyd,. and Nubian Crackers

What was Funkdoobiest - hit - can't remember that one either, Just remember they were on same label as Volume 10 - Pistol Grip Pump - lol

Song titles help a lot in this situation unless you only had one or two hits like Apache or Xclan or as BUNCH of hits like Biggie or Pac

Funkdoobiets - The Funkiest, was burning up NYC streets back in the early 90s. Bow wow wow did okay at best.

song titles help. if you're a dj that did not grow up in that error you wouldn't understand that music unless someone educated you on what songs were playable in parties. you cant just go by the amazon popularity because popularity doesn't necessarily mean banger... especially to people that grew up in that era.
Mr. Goodkat 4:42 PM - 7 April, 2015
of course it doesnt if you are playing for people from the generation, but these young kids arent from that generation. from what i get, they have a totally different takes on a lot of these songs.

the funniest one for me is coolio-'gangster's paradise', young white kids love that song and i cant think of any hip hop club that would have touched that at the time.

I feel like Black people loved that song for a few months, then got tired of it. A lot of songs go that way...anything from Nelly, or even DMX "Party up"

So many great posts here, try this website out,

thenostalgiamachine.com

You input the year, and it gives you I think all the tracks that made it to the charts. And when you see the tracks, it will jog your memory...

I use this website alot when I am trying to put together like an 80s set or a 2000's pop set... its a great reference.

Also, you can always just google, old school hiphop rnb dj mix, or youtube it, and there is some great, really talented djs...

two last pointers... and this works for me as I am playing a hiphop/rnb/reggae club now... Dont play the over played old school, like Nelly- Ride wit me, and crazy in love... thats not a throwback cuz people are always hearing these tracks still... try to dig up those tracks that were really hot back in the day but dont get played as often in your city anymore... so instead of playing like Next- Too Close, why not throw on some Jon B - Don't Stop.

try throwing in old school with new school, mash ups, or even use a world play segway, Hotline bling... mixed with kiss me through the phone... or like Shorty Swing My Way, with Future & Drake - Come My Way... you can have alot of fun with that.

Hi,

Please help me, this may seem a bit impossible. I need to find a song, i dont remember if it was R&B or Reaggae, but like somewhere in between. (don't strangle me)
The music video was on the beach and in a saliboat, there were a lor of women dancing. Also a jeep appeared at some point, i think.

The man/band is not very famous, it was propably a one hit wonder.

If someone can give me some options that you might think of I'd really appreciate it!!!

Thanks!

No dis taken.

What I meant was...
I'm old in this dj game compared to a lot of people.
I see what I think are too many people that HAVE to use sync to dj.
Too many people that refuse to learn how to truly dj. Too many people that can't mix by ear.

I went behind someone that HAD to use sync because quite frankly... he sucks. He can't dj to save his life or anyone else's.
I loaded a track and could not get it to be at the right speed. Sync was in control. Not me.
Because I don't use sync,I could not figure out how to turn the damn thing off. I kept pushing the button but it would not turn off.i had no idea you had to hit shift and sync at the same time to turn it off.
Even with sync on, the dj before me still sucked and he trainwreckd.

I am not one of those dj's that think you have to be a purist. I accept new tech but damn...
Learn the basics!
Learn the music!
Learn the craft if you are going to do this in public!!!

Yeah... I learned on turntables with actual records. I had to do it the hard way.
It would be refreshing to see the younger up n coming generation learn the basics so they can really do the job instead of relying on the machine to do it for them.

fax brother! couldn't agree more my dad taught me to beat mix when i was 5 on his technics ill never forget the day i mixed some rick James super freak with legs by zz top and since that day I fell in love with djing. I can DJ on anything and beat mix by ear like its nothing sometimes when the bpm is off n Serato ill count it my self and manually input. and personally, I have sync disabled on Serato. when I first came into the dvs world of SSL i loved it because the DJ was still in control of everything that shits changing real quick everyone a DJ nowadays.
