Moving To Atlanta from the Chicago & DJing

djransom 9:02 PM - 5 January, 2009
Me and my fam are pretty much set on moving to ATL soon. I've had some great opportunities here in the Chi as a DJ and would love to translate that over to the A. I have some connects that could possibly make some moves for me, but speaking for myself to other ATL DJs what would be the best way to get your name out there, demos, networking, etc. Thanks in advance.
DVDjHardy 9:27 PM - 5 January, 2009
No idea here, but good luck with the move!
DJ GaFFle 9:51 PM - 5 January, 2009
You might wanna start by getting your www.djransom.org UP and working. :-D
djransom 10:30 PM - 5 January, 2009
Gaffle I took that site down a month ago. I just use myspace.com/djransom25 now. I know u live in the A from previos posts. Any other tips?
Logisticalstyles 11:26 PM - 5 January, 2009
Network, meet other DJs and club owners. There are a couple of new spots opening up in the city. Go out and meet some people.

Don't forget to say 'shawty' and 'fixin to' a lot.

believe it or not check Craigslist. I don't know how many is legit. I'm 2 hours away in Augusta, but I still check out the A, just to see what's poppin. The Apache Cafe has an open decks night.

Apache, I forgot about that open decks night. I gotta check that out.

Do the typical and go to some clubs and talk to the promoters. I can forward you the name of several. I'm not sure of the style of music you play but if it's urban, get used to the 68 - 85bpm range really quick.

Not all spots here require you play that type.
DJ CISCO 6:10 PM - 8 January, 2009
Dam Ransom!! Your leaving?!?! Too cold huh!??! GOOD LUCK BROTHA!!

Gaffle shoot me an email to djransomm@gmail.com with the info when you get a chance. Believe it or not, here in the Chi @ the urban joints that's the BPM that gets the parties poppin so the adjustment wouldn't be bad at all. Good info Kadillac. Yeah Cisco I need a change. The wife and kids are ready to go plus my best friend just move there. I went to help him move and fell in love with the city. Has that urban appeal with the feel of the country, gotta love it.
djransom 7:45 PM - 8 January, 2009
I'm in the midst of looking for a job in the A. Once that happens then it's a certified wrap for me and the Chi.
dj mikeb 8:24 PM - 8 January, 2009
start small and get in with the promoters(that's the only way to spin at the big clubs) it's super political down here...and it's not all rednecks-the crowds are pretty dope...atl is a great place
djransom 12:29 AM - 9 January, 2009
Good info Mike. Sounds like the way it is here in Chi.
DJ TOGTFO 1:46 AM - 9 January, 2009
ATL is whack.. stay in Chicago.

Now that may be one crazy a$$ post there... Saying ATL is wack.
Double LOL !
DJ TOGTFO 9:51 AM - 9 January, 2009
ATL scene is doo doo... Name one dope club in ATL. Since Compound and Vision shut down, shit in ATL has been whack as fuck, restaurants are the new lounges, lounges are empty and mega clubs like Opera piss so many people off on a weekly basis that they have a venue that holds probably 1500 and cant even get 700 through the door. If thats Mike B from Q100, youre pretty dope, but I'm sorry, Opera still sucks. There are a bunch of sick DJ's in ATL, but its a combo of the economy and lame club-goers that ruined the ATL nightlife.

What do you mean about Opera? I've never been there. What do they do?
Dj-M.Bezzle 3:51 PM - 9 January, 2009
Mike b is sick..im listening to his sat night q from 10 25 08 right now
dj mikeb 5:22 PM - 9 January, 2009
thanks for the props dudes...about opera,i spun there on nye and there were 3,000 peeps...dude shit was nutso.

i see what ur saying about the scene-i loved the hell outta compound-it was my home...

i think the scene in most cities have sucked the last year but i'm seeing it get back to how it was-there are a bunch of new spots opening up in the next few months,i'm starting a sat night at primal(use to be wetbar) and i tell ya that spot is really dope.

so in conclusion i see what ur sayin about the scene but it's getting and will be a lot better-hopefully it will get back to the days of the velvet room-backsteet and riveria...those were good days dudes...

Can't be worse than the club-goers here in the Chi who want to hear Pop Champagne @ 11'o clock. My main reason for going to the A is not for DJing anyway. That's secondary.
Logisticalstyles 6:34 PM - 9 January, 2009
I was talking to a co-worker the other day about the clubs here in Atlanta. He's a transplant and is amazed at how small and wack most clubs here are. Even the strip clubs are tiny holes in the wall. You would think Magic City was a huge spot the way it gets mentioned all the time, but when you go in there it's a tiny, cramped room.

I hate that Vision is gone even though I prefered it when it was Kiya (sp?). There are some big clubs here, but who wants to travel outside the perimeter just to get wasted and try to make it home without a DUI? Plus I heard some of those big clubs were nothing more than converted warehouses.
djbabyboy 9:11 PM - 9 January, 2009
Gaffle i was thinking the same thing. What is Opera? That sounds like some old back street club that he hangs out in. And i don't know if i want to go there or not.

I know where Opera is (on Crescent and Peachtree near Sutra and Leopard Lounge) but I've just never been there. I was wondering how they pissed folks off. Do they hold people up at the door or something or do they think they're on some LA/Hollywood issh and let only the B and C-listers in 1st while the paying folks look dumb?
djbabyboy 9:19 PM - 9 January, 2009
Logisticalstyles, Kaya was and will always be my favorite along with Atlanta Live. Hell even wild out at Club 559 a few times. I think one of the reason things change is the music no more party music and if you do play it they looking at you like WTF,,( Kizzy Rock and etc...) and we got older. These club go-ers just don't know how to party like we or let me say like i did back then.
djbabyboy 9:20 PM - 9 January, 2009
Ok thinks for the clear up.
Logisticalstyles 12:06 AM - 10 January, 2009
Yeah I used to spend a lot of time at 559 and the Warehouse. Now the Warehouse was an excellent club. Plenty of space, great sound system, everyone was there and the drinks were strong. That's where Lil' John and Searcy used to kill it.

You're right, we are old.
djransom 10:45 PM - 14 January, 2009

djransom 10:43 PM - 22 January, 2009
I was in ATL from Sunday to Wednesday and must say that I truly enjoyed myself and didn't want to come back to the Chi. We went to Taboo 2 Bistro Sunday night and I only wish it was like that here in the Chi. Monday night I got a chance to check out Notorious @ Atlantic Station and that is a nice joint indeed. We went to Strokers Tuesday night and enjoyed ourself. I'm definitely looking forward to going back in a couple of weeks. Oh yeah, now I see what people mean about Lenox Mall. All I could say was whoa!!!!
shiestO! 11:05 PM - 22 January, 2009
Yo here's a link for 404audio it's a drum and bass forum in ATL run by Anthony Mayhem. you may not listen to dnb but there's people on there that can likely steer you in the right direction for gigs (maybe) and know where to go for your particular style, whatever it may be.

www.404audio.com

good luck dudeman. i bet its fucking warm down there.

Man I could have told you that. When I was down there EVERYONE was like look, you don't wanna go there on the weekends. So i ended up at some place I believe it was called Greenbriar or sum'n like that. Not the best looking mall but I did see a few georgia peaches. Hell I was with one when I was in the mall lmao!
Dj-M.Bezzle 5:46 PM - 23 January, 2009

Other than the occasional 6ft 200 pound transexual cross-dresser at the make-up section, Lennox Mall is a very nice mall. Phipps is a little nicer, but Lennox is dope too. Greenbriar Mall is where ppl get shot up and you can see drug deals goin down in the parking lot on the regular.

I'd say that's more the West End mall and South Dekalb Mall. You'll be in sneaker heaven at Greenbriar, they've got the latest and greatest. Go to the Underground to buy yourself some bootleg stuff and see what real urban Atlantans look and act like.

TOGTFO is right about Lenox. Very nice mall but the alternative crowd dominates the weekend flow of patrons. Phipps is even more uppedity with high-end stores.

Atlantic Station is nice all the way around. Can't say anything negative about it.

I'll be back Presidents Day weekend because that's my homeys bday weekend and he wants to hit up the Velvet room that Sunday night. I did notice some dope chicks in Lennox though. We went in the Aldo store and had to walk out because it was bit too much staring at the Georgia Peaches in there. I agree Gaffle about Atlantic Station. A beautiful place indeed. We went inside of Ten Pin, I was expecting some huge place, but was suprised by the size and how it appears to be more like a club than a bowling alley. I've been back in the Chi since Wednesday and I'm ready to go back.
DJ TOGTFO 8:28 PM - 23 January, 2009
yea @ Gaffle... I meant West End mall, not greenbriar mall lol.. my bad.
Logisticalstyles 2:07 AM - 24 January, 2009
I live around the West End mall. I only go in there for the Radio Shack and that is usually by mistake. I hate Lenox as well. It used to be the jump off back in the day (89-96). Now it's queen city and I'm not talking about the spot in the west end. If I want to shop at the mall and not get pissed off in the first 10 minutes, I go to Perimeter mall right by my job.

Have any of you guys checked out The Artistry yet? I helped a friend do a gig there last weekend. It's a nice spot but we had to bring a sound system with us.

Yeah, isn't that spot on Peachtree near some condos that always complains about the sound volume? A Black chick owns it I think.

Perimeter is a very nice mall too. It always stays crowded. Lots of nice shops in that area.
