Wow didn't that quickly backfire. Seems like out of the "gazillion" songs that you think are classy no one seems to find one...

At most of my "classy" gigs right after dinner or reception...I usually start the crowd with Watchwww.youtube.com

"he went from ashy to classy"
DJ CISC0 11:19 PM - 4 January, 2009
^^^still not classy but I think it's more of a "smooth" listening...Kind've like a chill out sesion. I think the word "classy" should be replaced with "smooth". There are a ton of smooth/easy listening hip hop songs out there.
agentorange 11:31 PM - 4 January, 2009

BattleFunk 12:13 PM - 5 January, 2009
classy hip hop? its from the street, how can you make that mistake?

you sound like you're trying to make the definition between rappers and lyricists - neither of which are hip hop

its all music at the end of the day, if you start putting middle class ethics on it you might as well join a jazz group and wear a scarf

listen cos you love that shit, not because of the status or look that it gives you
frost-9 12:16 PM - 5 January, 2009
heh.. all this cause a bunch of us thought 'pop champagne' lacked class -- my main argument was that the song takes a traditional symbol of good taste and class (champagne for those of you having a difficult time following) and cheapens it down to malt liquor status all-the-while maintaining the belief that the mere purchase of expensive alcohol affords one the image of a person well refined and cultured when the portrayal in the song does just the opposite.

a few weeks back I walked past a very plus size woman wearing a dress several sizes too small in a very inebriated state posing for pictures with what I can only assume were her friends. as they struggled to prop her up for the photo, she continuously not so much as screamed, but belched out "WE POP CHAMPAGNE," while no doubt believing that she was an object of desire. That is the image I will always have in my head when someone requests this song.
BattleFunk 12:18 PM - 5 January, 2009

Caramac 1:40 PM - 5 January, 2009
I said it in the previous thread and I'll say it again. Anything short of a LL Cool J song or Big Daddy Kane song you can't really call hip hop classy. Now the songs mentioned are nice just not classy. I'd agree with whoever said something like Frank Sinatra or Louis Armstrong is classy. Timbs and Hoodies will never be considered classy no matter how you try and justify it. Even shirts and ties aren't classy. It's a kind of aura that only a few people have. Hence why people buy certain things or dress a certain way to try and aspire to that image.
DJ Art Pumpin Payne 6:05 PM - 5 January, 2009
I think the original poster needs to define "classy"?

yeah mostly older stuff. gangstarr - moment of truth, common - the light
Caramac 10:24 AM - 6 January, 2009
This thread is kind of lame because I've been thinking about a conversation I had with one girl I know.

She said she doesn't like gangsta rap and only listens to Jay Z and 50 Cent. Lol. Probably two of the most successful gangsta's in rap. I know what she meant but lol come on.

Which reminded me that most people don't know fuck all about rap music so the whole classy thing is a mute point. You could play 50 Cent's Candy Shop at an event like that and I'm sure they'd love it and that song is far from classy.
RAGEDJ 10:34 AM - 6 January, 2009
What about

excuse me miss- jay z
one more chance - biggie
i know-jay z
DJ Schematic 10:49 AM - 6 January, 2009

You won't get anywhere with this argument Caramac...trust me I went there and it wasn't worth the headache.

Plus I think the OP changed his definition of "classy".
DJ Habibi 4:16 PM - 6 January, 2009
agentorange, have you considered New Jack Swing tracks? The BPM is slightly faster at times but it tends to be less offensive/in your face but just as funky, with rnb singing as opposed to rapping. See what you think of these -

I want her (Keith Sweat)
Groove Me (Guy)
Somebody For Me (Heavy D And The Boyz)
Poison (Bell Biv Devoe)
Hold On (En Vogue)
Feels Good (Tony Toni Tone)
She's Mine (Basic Black) [Try to hunt down the Pete Rock remix]
Anything (Old Skool Version) (SWV feat. Wu Tang Clan)

And Hip Hop off the top of my head?
Can't You See? (Total feat. Notorious BIG)
Could It Be (Remix) (Jaheim)
I'll Be (Foxy Brown feat. Jay Z)
All Good? (De La Soul)
Anything by Common (The Light, for example)
Anything by SWV, TLC, Digable Planets.

Happy Hunting.

whats funny is that i've seen similar requests before, and about 30 mins in they'll ask for all the pop stuff, because their guests want to hear it. I can almost guarantee it.
