Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Is the new Macbook 13" good enough for Video SL

djfuzz 7:37 AM - 4 January, 2009
Id like to know if this MAcbook works steadily with Video SL because the specs of this Macbook is about the same or better than the previous Macbook pro (NVIDIA 8600 T).
Experts, please let me know, Thanks

13" Macbook,160 GB HD
Processor-Intel core 2 duo,1066 mhz frontside bus
Memory-2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Graphics-NVIDIA Ge Force 9400M with 256 MB of shared DDR3SDRAM

shared memory video is not the best way to go for doing video mixing. these types of video cards are really inferior to dedicated video systems.

there are plenty of people here who are running VSL with regular macbooks but most would prefer the MacBook Pro. the macbook pro will be able to do higher frame rates, higher bitrate videos and more effects without stuttering.

if all you want to be able to do is medium quality straight video mixing with a simple fade transition, then you'll probably be fine. if you want higher quality and being able to use effects, you'll need to get the macbook pro.

I am using the new MacBook (with 4GB RAM) an it is working very well. 50 - 60 FPS with VSync on.

@ FDW - how long have you ran VSL on your unibody Macbook with no stuttering or problems ? would you be able to run VSL for 4 hrs straight?

Im curious as to how well the Unibody Macbook performs with video as well....

i run the video SL on the old black macbook with 2 gigs of ram, im using it since novemeber....works fine! on the unibody mac book i think it will work perfect!
FDW 11:16 PM - 14 January, 2009
Over 4h with not a single problem! Working fine.
MSF 11:27 PM - 14 January, 2009
thanks FDW.

What quality level are you using?

i wouldn't feel completely safe using usb ports for video mixing

Medium I think. But with the new VSL 1.1.0 it's running even better. Apple put out an update for the onboard-graphic a few months ago that slowed everything down. There is no fix yet, so DO NOT INSTALL IT and you get the most out of VSL!

Just got the new macbook and I use it as a backup computer it runs fine with no problem even with 2GB of ram on VSL and MixEmergency.

FDW, when using VSL, do you notice your waveforms stuttering more when video is enabled and the output window is full screen on the output source? I have the 13" unibody and once I enable video and full screen it, the waveforms become very jumpy

you know which update this is, is it the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware 1.3? I believe I did this one, Is there a way to go back. I have a feeling this is screwing things up for me since i have the choppy waveforms when activating video

unibody Macbook is what I use, I do 5 hr video sets weekly, have done up to 9 hr sets with no issues.

BUT in my opinion I would get the MBP. I am constantly wondering "what if I had a MBP?"

1- Firewire instead of USB. My usb external HD works, but when I load a track it pauses for a sec, a scary sec.
2- MiniDVI is better is you need to go to S-video/RCA, one less adaptor you will need to buy and set up (older Version of MBP at least)
3- Will the video work better? Tough to say since i dont have any issues currently, but I am always wondering.

I think I will get a MBP when they release another one.

dj hes, can u answer my question I also asked FDW 3 posts up. I have my macbook firmware all p to date and when doing video, the audio waveforms going vertical are VERY jumpy

I dont have that problem, and I am sure I am on the latest version and my wave forms are not choppy. Are your Videos ran from an external? is so try a couple files locally and see if that makes a difference.

Close, Airport is you run it as well as any other applications when running VSL.

Also could be your svl settings? mine are default settings I beleive.
BriChi 8:20 PM - 7 April, 2009
yeah, I did all that, all files are local and ripped properly. Nathan and i have been narrowing it down to just the grid fade effect causing the issue. It drops the fps almost in half when the fader is in the middle so something is up. It is all in the thread here scratchlive.net

I don't think so...

Not the firmware-updates, but the graphic-update is gone after reinstalling Mac OS!
BriChi 9:00 PM - 7 April, 2009
so the graphics update was software not F.W.?
FDW 9:02 PM - 7 April, 2009
Yes.

I think you installed this: www.apple.com That's not a problem!
BriChi 9:04 PM - 7 April, 2009
cool, so maybe ill wipe my mac out tonight, not update anything and see if the choppy waveforms caused by the grid fade effect are still there
FDW 9:05 PM - 7 April, 2009
good luck!
BriChi 9:06 PM - 7 April, 2009
thx for your help FDW, Ill keep it posted
FDW 9:12 PM - 7 April, 2009
btw.: I was playing around with VSL a few moments ago and I also had some kind of choppy waveforms. But not that extreme... you can only see, that die graphic-card has much to do :)
