FAT 32

dj vmb 7:27 PM - 24 November, 2008
From the response I’ve gotten from a Seagate rep is that if you have your external hard drive formatted as fat 32 that “Sooner or later it will fail” on the mac side. He went on to tell me that it is better to format the drives so it can only be used for Mac or PC. For most of us this is pretty shity.

The question I have now is, was that guy full of it…or is this true? If this is true then I, and most of you guys, would have to buy 2 drives to back up both PC and Mac. Is there any truth to what the Seagate rep is saying?

You must have been reading my mind...At first I had my drive in NTFS this was cool as mac could read it but mac could not save que points and loops as it cant write to NTFS. Go to fat 32 then the damn thing will load slow and yes I have heard the same thing about fat32 killing drive faster. I guess the thing to do is do all loops and cues on my PC and save them using NTFS what you guys think. I don't want to keep updating two or external drive all the time. I think I will go back to fat32 segate has a five year replacement warranty so in my eyes the sooner it crashes the sooner I get a new drive...

Make sure they are at least 7200rmp and firewire

Is firewire more secure than usb 2? I the slower firewire which is 400mbs has a slower transfer rate than usb 2 which I believe is 480mbs. The firewire 800mbs is so much more expensive, but I may shell out the money so I never have an external hard drive dropout at a gig.

How long have you been using it and did you format your drive with it. Thanks for you help but I know you have some time waiting on remixes to encode.
