New Macbook Pro issue with video out

Just wanted to let everyone know my experience.
I bought the brand new Mac Book Pro (late 2008 model). The video out is different from the previous version. It's a Mini Display Port. The only two options they have to get into a video source is adapters to vga or dvi-d. I thought I'd be cool because I was using DVI on my old Macbook Pro with no issues. I just used the DVI to s-video and I'd be good. But on the new Macbook pro display port to dvi adapter, there is no analog prong. So you can only go straight to a dvi digital connection (no s-video or composite video connection).
When I tried to go VGA to s-video, different set of issues. VGA doesn't seem to like to convert to s-video or composite. Once I got to this point I just decided to return the laptop and get one of the previous models of Macbook Pro that is still using the dvi out. And, I got a great deal on it because everyone's trying to clear these out to make room for the new ones.
ANyway, just wanted to let people know so you don't go through the same madness I went through for 2 weeks.
In the end, I just want to say, Apple was very accomodating and allowed me to return the laptop. Gotta love them Apple folks.

The problem is that there is no apple adapter to get to composite yet? Were you trying to go mini-dvi to vga then vga to composite? This doesn't work. You need to get an external convertor....or get a previous generation MBP.

im sure it wont be long until apple comes out with some sort of adaptor... until then, we have to ghettofy the new Macs to work!

I saw that coming so when the new MBP came out I brought last years model at a major discount and don't have to worry about a thing. Like I said in another post never be the first to try something new,,,, it always put's you in a bind or you have to spend money. Nice ass laptop but can't use it for what it was intended. Like AfterShok said they will make an adaptor that is for sure but hell you would have thought they would have put more thought in that before the relaesed the new MBP. I would be pissed if I had gotten a new one like I almost did. That's a lot of money not to be able to put out video on normal sources with out buying second hand converters.

i just got the new mbp yesterday. after i read this post i went over to the apple store up the block from me. Jonathon is right. they tried to sell me an adapter that they have in stock. and it was $29. i'm gonna wait till they come out with the right caple. funky is right, why wouldn't apple think about this problem before hand. besides that, the new mpb is pretty nice.

so last night i went to apple and and asked for help regarding the above issue. it's like jonathon said, no s-video output can be used. the only solution that they could give me was to get this: www.ramelectronics.net. but i've read reviews and customers have said the quality isn't that good. i purchased the min display to vga connection anyways. is anyone using the new macbook pro for vsl? please let me know what you are using thanks.

I got the new MBP, I'm using the VGA adapter, split the signal to two projectors. Thats how I roll for now. I'm using 2x50ft of VGA line. I understand that S-video cables are more convenient, its not as thick as VGA cables. But VGA has better picture quality than S-Video. I also was debating between old and new MBP. I figured If I'm gonna spend over a thousand bucks, I might as well throw in more to get the next generation which has a better graphic card. This composite and S-Video connections are minor issues, I'm sure Apple will come out with adapter soon, just have to be patient. As long as you have a way of projecting your image (via VGA & DVI)then your good to go, there should be no reason for you not to use these connections.

i didn't get because i didn't have a s-video connection. then i went to the apple store and found out that the mbp can't use s-video output. i heard from another memeber that it looks grainy.

I am in the same boat as all of you... but look in previous posts... All you need is the apple Mini display port to vga adapter and then any pc to tv card.... it takes the vga out and then converts it to s-video or component.... anyone should do... a decent one should run you about $50 or better.... I know it seems like a lot of extra to do bu the new mbp is great

VGA is much better than s-vid so it is the way to go...I mean it's the only way to go without buying convertors. Yet if you don't have that type of connection on your displays then a converter will be needed....Duhhh.. : ) I think the main reason everyone wants to use s-vid is because it easy and easy to record with out spending much money.

Yo Prince,
I got the new MBP 2.4/2gigs/256graphics. I set everything to the max and checked every transition, everything is smooth. Except, or I may be trippin, with the melt transition, my waveform seemed a little choppy, I don't know it was I late I may have been too tired. But preview screens, everything works, for sure its solid.

Oh yah, track pad works like an ordinary track pad. However, When I first turned it on, track pad did not work. You have to press the track pad to hear a click when you select buttons on the screen. When your done with initial setup of MBP, just go into settings and change settings of trackpad so that it will be light touch sensitive. Theres been complain that track pad doesn't work when they first turn their book on. Its not really broken, its just not initially set to light touch. You'll find out. It pissed me off initial but I figured it out.

melt is really really intensive. It is doing an optical flow calculation between the two video frames then using this for texture deformation. Should still deliver ok framerates though...

The New 15.4 MBP is what I just got.
2.8 Ghz Processor; A WHOPPING 512MB of VRAM (2 Graphic Cards); 4GB RAM, upgraded HD to 7200RPM. (A Recommend)
This laptop doesn't miss a lick or skip a beat ETC with ANY of the video effects.
(including the MELT that Nathan H mentioned)
As far as video out, I am using the miniport to VGA adapter. This is hooking into a 3 projector system @ the Niteclub.
Make sure you uncheck the mirror box for your two displays.
Go to Sys Prefs... Then Displays...
Click Detect Displays, then you will need to uncheck the Mirror Box. Then all I did was click and drag the video output window in Video-SL over to the right; completely off my laptop screen...
Finally, Click on FULLSCREEN.
Have not tried going from VGA to SVideo.
AS far as the new Macbook Pros, the Miniport used for Video Output is new.
Apple is Offering Free Licensing of Mini DisplayPort; what does this mean?
It will allow 3rd party manufacturers to integrate the port into their own products and also to develop additional useful adapters.

DJ Pimp,
First and Foremost, You will need to go to the club you plan on performing at and giving their video system's connections, a quick inspection. The venue may be using a different type of Video Input than VGA, DVI maybe for example.
You will need to know this...FIRST.
Then, if it is a VGA input;
Make sure when you DO get your new MBP, that you follow the quoted steps below, OR VIDEO-SL will not display properly. What your crowd will get is a mirrored image of what YOU see on your desktop.
APPLE MiniPort to VGA Adapter link below quote of mine on this post...
One more thing Pimp, The VGA cable that I use, one end is male VGA, the other end that plugs into the Projector system is FEMALE VGA. This does not mean you will need the same type of cable. The point I am trying to get across to you and anyone else is to be fully prepared. And what I mean by being fully prepared is walking into your venue having more than one or two types of cables for VGA and DVI. Unless of course one has already Confirmed and tested their setup etc already in the club.
The Miniport adapters I bought from apple require me to plug a MALE VGA or MALE DVI and then run FEMALE VGA or DVI to the Projector system. Your situation could be different. While you wait I would hop, skip, jump, drive, fly to the club and give the video system a good inspect as to what you will need. Dont forget of course that you will need to run audio seperately. That pretty little miniport is VIDEO only. I heard about a VJ who had it all setup, but didn't have a way to run his Master Audio Outs from his TTM-57SL to the club's mixer. WHOOPS!

Rebelguy is correct, VGA is an analog connection as well.

I am not trying to run VGA to SVideo, I was only stating and responding to DJ Jonathan, that I hadn't tried his type of video connection. :) ;)

Since I started this thread, thought I'd update everyone. I'm back with the unibody Macbook and I'm using the Avermedia Quickplay with a separate USB hub to power the Quickplay. It's awesome! I haven't had one issue and the quality of the image is great!

this won't be happening. Apple will no longer be making composite adapters like they did in the past. there's a whole lot of copy protection coming your way and the hardware needs to be able to enforce it.
the old analog loopholes are being closed one by one. all of this is demanded by content providers. this is the reason why its been such a pain in the ass getting sensible content distribution, the enforcement of copy protection and drm is way more important to them than your experience using their products.
sad really.

DJ Jon, Really sorry to hear you had that problem and really sorry to hear u returned your macbook for an older one! For all you people who dont know much about getting from Mini DisplayPort to S-Video or Composite (Yellow) output, here it is. First of all, its impossible to go from Mini DisplayPort to S-Video or Composite from using just adaptors without having problems with no video at all or quality complications if for some reason it does work. The reason for this is that the Mini DisplayPort output is DIGITAL VIDEO out. S-Video and composite are both ANALOG. Therefore are not compatible with eachother. There are adaptors you can get from apple to go from Mini DisplayPort to DVI and VGA but thats it. And if you go to MacMall.com you can pick up a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI which works beautifully! As for going to S-Video or Composite, you HAVE to get a converter or some sort. Alot of people are using AVerMedia's Quickplay which is a usb powered converter that is really small that converts the signal from Digital down to analog. The problem alot of people have is that if your using a Macbook Pro like I am, With Video, Alot of the time all the USB ports are taken up and Its not good to use HUBs alot of times. The answer to that is AVerMedia's iMicro. It does exactly the same thing as the Quickplay but instead of USB power it has a 12V AC power adaptor. Its also really small and will fit quite easily into a record bag or whatever. I had to purchase one because one of the clubs i DJ at has Composite in only, and all the other clubs have HDMI. Hope this helps everyone.

I did a little research on the Power plug deal and found no answers. If you visit AVerMedias website you will find that they are quite extensive into video converting and such. Im sure if that was some type of option then they would sell the Power adapter on their site as an add on. If your worried about the cost of the iMicro, it would still cost you to get that adapter and the Quick play. Its worth a shot tho if you really wanted the quick play. The iMicro is really sweet tho!

I got the 99 buck PC to TV converter box from Radio Shack and it actually works for me.
Only problem is an ocassional hum in the audio and visible scrolling lines in my HDTV (which I hate). I have a 2008 Macbook, 2GB Ghz, 4GB RAM (I upgraded), running Mini Display Port to VGA, then VGA to PC to TV box, from there S-Video to TV. Tried composite yellow jack...still the same. Scratch Live is all I run on this Macbook, occasionally Itunes.
Trying to resolve this issue right now...anyone else had this issue? Any solutions?

I also have the hum in the audio and visible scrolling lines. I bought 2 direct boxes with a ground lift. one for each channel (left/right) and it got rid of the hum and the scrolling lines. You should be able to get a simple direct box for around 40 bucks each.
I am also using Apples mini display port to VGA and connect it to a small converter box by Sewell which gives me the option to output it to S-Video, Composite or VGA. This converter box can be powered by USB or purchase a USB power adapter from apple to plug it right in if you don't have enough USB ports open
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. Yea I think it could be a ground loop issue. I don't have the problem when mixing video at home. It's only in the DJ booth at my spot. I'm sure it's an issue with the amps/lighting, etc. Will get direct boxes and hopefully that will solve my problem as well.
Also, thanks for the info on the usb power situation. Only two usb ports on my mac and I really wanted to know if usb was the only way to power the box. I'm off to buy a power adapter as well.
