I recently went and updated several of my folders of videos with new tracks and replaced tracks with edits, remixes, etc... so some are added and some are removed.
I followed what the logical steps are to update the crates. I go to import, drag each folder I updated to the corresponding crate. After that I go to "re-scan id3 tags"... it scans and finds tracks that are no longer there... I delete those...
Now here is the problem... I now have DOUBLES of tracks in each crate because I dragged over all the content from that folder. From what I remember it is only supposed to ADD only new tracks not ALL of them again...
Is there a fix for this or do I have to REBUILD all my crates again?

I've done this...not knowing what exactly to do I delted the crates completely and added them in again. :(

Well I just deleted the database that was on the root of the external drive where I have my video content for VSL.
I copied a back up of the database from about a month ago from a separate computer.
followed the steps as before and this time it worked fine... still wondering why that happened before... what a pain.
Can't wait till they add "smart" crates to an update... Long overdue!!

The only time SSL should create a double is when the same file is imported from a different location or imported with a different file name.

will it was from the same drive, same location, not different names... and it did it anyways...

Pretty weird stuff.
If it happens again, can you take a screen shot of your library, with the import window open and the location column in your library displayed, please?

Yeah, please post a link to the screenshot.
There was once a bug where the filename/pathes differed by uppercase/lowercase. This was a result of Mac+PC mixture. But I think that issue has been fixed long time ago.

well I since corrected it by erasing the database after the glitch. I replaced it with an older database that I backed up on a separate drive. When I did that I just followed the steps and it works fine now.
I am not sure if I can recreate this and hope it doesn't happen in the future.
But here are more details on how I update my videos.
I have a master copy of my video library on my home workstation PC computer. I connect up an external firewire drive and using a program to sync up content from the master library to the external drive's content. I then open up serato on the PC and make sure all it updated correctly by doing the steps as listed above (dragging folders into corresponding crates, etc). After that I build overviews and close it all up.
I then connect it up to MacBook Pro which I use strictly for DJ-ing.
I didn't even get to the Mac part when this issue happened.
So what I am wondering is that last time it was used before the update it was connected to my MAC and I remember it did some back up process of the database automatically when I turned on Serato one time... not sure when it did it that something confused the library and when plugged back into the PC it couldn't understand the new updated tracks completely.

Phat-Al I do mine the same way as far as how you place them on your external saves my laptops undue stress. I am still having to add my videos to the folders when I hook it up to my MAC. It was never like that my folders where the same on PC & MAC as the crates are stored on the external. Now I can build overview on Mac quit the program and come back and the overviews that I built are not there. I think this all happened after my last Mac Update. I know one thing I am glad I carry a PC laptop with me because I did a wedding, when got the Mac up and running it had like 3 crates and that was it. I didn't want to take the time to add all those damn folders so I hooked up PC everything was there crates and subcrates go figure. I say all of that to say this,,, why are they there for PC but not MAC just what am I missing besides my brain

hmmm.. and they say MAC's are better....
well if I could EVER get Serato Video to actually work on my PC I would do the same as far as keeping it around to as a back-up.

I don't understand why it's (PC LAP)not working unless you have one of those intel graphics card. Other than that it should work well and I am guessing you would install XP so it should really run good.Hummm have you tried both Vista and XP? I am using vista and HP laptop and on the real runs just about as good as the MAC. Picture is not as bright. Mac is better for this application except with these damn creates I will try all the above when I get home and hope my issue comes to pass. Good luck on that PC AL video drivers and setting is where you would start but I don't need to tell you that. I bet money if you didn't buy that Mac you would have that PC up and running by now. :) peace...

oh I tried everything on my PC.... operating system (xp & vista), video card drivers, & other tweaks, etc...
if you look at my profile it has the specs of the PC laptop there. It has a dedicated video card.
I think if my macbook pro were to crap out for some reason I would be FORCED into getting my PC up and running... which happened about 2 months ago... during which I just VDJ instead on my PC.
I eventually want a second macbook pro as a back up instead.

ok... well the problem with double tracks is still there... but... it is on my "ALL" section ... very odd.
All the other crates it looks fine.. but when I do a search for a specific video.. it is listed like twice. what the... ?

I can make this happen when I import manually and have the folder path CASE different.
Say I have a drive, folder and mp3 like this:
S:\SSL\Song.mp3
If I open explorer manually and type in s:\ssl (instead of S:\SSL), I can import the same file, Song.mp3 and it will show up as a duplicate.
Go to your ALL section where you have your duplicate files, then choose the path view so you can see the whole path to the file. If the case is different, then it shows as a different location and is the same issue I posted above.

I thought the same thing as far as path... it showed each duplicate the exact same on both copies.
I got frustrated and just scrapped the whole thing and am building crates all over again... very time consuming. I have to re-build overviews, set cue points, etc...
Not cool...
This needs to be fixed. Unfortunate that VDJ actually had a better way updating tracks than Serato.

too late... I already as you can read started rebuilding my crates.
And you don't need to see a screenshot with saying the exact same full path on each doubled track. I already checked that before thinking there was something going on. I never change anything with the paths of video files.

Well, then you should have at least kept a copy of the DB so that the dev's can have a look and check what was causing this issue.

ok... before I start uploading databases, etc...
I just rebuilt my crates... let it build overviews... 13 hours later...
The building the crates and overviews are all done on my PC workstation.
I then go and plug-in the external HD to the macbook pro and when I start up serato it tries to automatically start reading tags... I remember this happened last time too.. it took like an hour for it to finish reading all the tags before I could play with the files with ease. This time I just stopped it from continueing to read all the tags...
I plug it back into my PC workstation and the files it DIDN'T read tags from are not showing ANY tag info... just blank spaces where should be. So I have my PC re-read the tags and all are there... I then plug it BACK into my MAC and POOF!! Double copies of EVERYTHING in my ALL folder.... again.
Why is it that it works fine when I build, test, set cue points, etc... on my PC but then as soon as I plug it into my MAC it acts like it needs to read tags all over again.. and when it does it creates DOUBLE copies in my ALL folder...
AND !!... it wants to build overviews for ALL the tracks ALL OVER AGAIN !!! FORK THAT !!!
Something HAS to be fixed with this!

+1 I delted everything and started over and no I didn't keep a copy of my DB as it was bad anyway. Did same as Phat on Thursday, Friday when I got home all looked good, played VSL on HP all good swithed(external drive)to Mac and the shit was all messed up. Since for the most part my crates match my folders I just import one folder at at time I don't have the time to keep building overviews. When you yall fix it let me know....Yall is a Texas thing.

Yes it is fat 32,,,,I was thinking of doing it mac style but then pc wont read it I think..... don't know as much about mac as I would like to. Funkytown is where I am from if I had to guess you would be from H-town also known as Screwston. For now I just use HP only problem is after I use the Mac I lose my sub crates when I go back to HP...

yes.
I need it formatted that way because I am using an encryption program to protect the drive. TrueCrypt is what I use. Been using it for years.
I can create the encrypted drive on my MAC and it formats to FAT32 and I can access it with both MAC & PC.
.....
I just let my MAC read tags AGAIN... this time I just let it finish. Then I went to the "ALL" folder... all is good... single copies of tracks.
Then I close up serato and then re-open it up... and look in the "ALL" folder.. now there are doubles of each track.
So it happens when I first put the drive connected to the MAC... and it want to scan for tags for unknown reason... it then creates doubles of tracks... and it says I have build overviews for all my tracks ALL OVER AGAIN...

ok... figured out one more thing.
When I rebuilt my crates I used a database I backed up from before. I then updated whatever tracks, etc... it all loaded fine on my PC. It is when I switched it over to the MAC is when it got all forked up.
So I did an experiment. I erased the database. Started a new crate from scratch, loaded like 70 videos in a crate. Built overviews, etc... on my PC.
I then went to the MAC and ... well it worked fine.
So my guess is that it had something to do with an older database not truly communicating all what is needed for the MAC side to understand so it tried to re-read all the tags and messed it all up.
Moral of the story... don't use backed-up databases..
That sux... because sometimes we need to.

well...
spoke too soon.
I just spent over an hour creating my crates from scratch.
I didn't build overviews... just crates and added tracks.
I went again over to the MAC after all this was done on my PC ... and once again... it is trying scanning for tags ...
what am I supposed to do ?
HELP !!

...
I figured it out...
apparently MAC's are to blame here.
MAC's don't like it when a root folder isn't starting with a capital letter.
Let me explain.
I have my videos all in an external drive.
The root folder that contains the video is a folder I called "videos"
Well... when I first started using Serato Video I actually had the folder with a capital "V" so it was like "Videos"
I recently just changed it to lowercase to be uniform with other folders. Everytime I updated any files or started new crates on my PC it worked fine. It was only when I connected it up to the MAC it couldn't take it.
How I discovered this is using what was mentioned earlier... by seeing the path for the tracks because they were now doubled. One had the lowercase folder spelling "videos" and the doubled track had the capital version "Videos"... very odd.
So I simply just renamed it with a capital "V" and for the last time REBUILT my crates... AGAIN... and it works fine now...
what a pain...
Now that should be something the development team may need to know to figure this odd issue out.

So do you see the different path names in the SSL library? Or is this something you recognized afterwards *outside* SSL?

I was looking at the SSL library and saw the paths there and noticed how one was "Videos" and the other was "videos"... like I explained earlier...
just weird how a MAC can't handle the lower case word as a root folder for the drive with the library...

There was once a bug where the filename/pathes differed by uppercase/lowercase. This was a result of Mac+PC mixture. But I think that issue has been fixed long time ago.
;)
Anyway, Serato should fix this.
