Make sure your movies are a Final Cut format like DV, DV50, or ProRes, then make sure your sequence settings match. If you're on a recent MBP it should be realtime until you get tricky.

you have to render everything because your sequence has the wrong settings. sequence settings can't be changed after there is content in the sequence, but in FCP6 if you drag your first file to the sequence, you will be prompted to change the sequence settings to match the clip. this will cut down on renders. also, FCP doesn't like MP3 audio so convert it to AIFF or WAV and put it back into the project to avoid more renders.

like XRM5 said, using a codec like Apple Pro Res 422 will cut down on rendering in the long run, but will take longer to encode upfront. how fast is your machine? my 2.4GHz macbook runs FCP faster than my dual 2.5GHz G5 does.
