HD Videos - Heavier Load?

Dj Shamann 12:37 AM - 6 April, 2013
I saw that Xtendamix has HD video now, I remember reading a while back about extra strain, how is HD going for anybody using it?

For video I have an i7, 4GB RAM, OSX 10.7.3
Serato 2.4.1 and Mix Emergency 2.2
Using a G-Drive through firewire 800

I don't advertise myself as a VJ, I do it for fun since I wanted to collect enough of a library before I got serious, but it's been over a year (and a half?) now and I'm racking up some pretty good crates, so I'm curious.
Dj Shamann 12:38 AM - 6 April, 2013
Shit, wrong forum, I don't know if mods move threads, but if one of you sees it that would be cool if you could.
the_black_one 12:54 AM - 6 April, 2013
i would assume so. How much video memory does your computer have? BTW if you can put 8 gig of ram in your computer do it!! i saw a huge boost
Dj Shamann 1:00 AM - 6 April, 2013
I meant to upgrade the RAM right off the hop, but since I only do video for fun at this point I never got around to it.
the_black_one 1:03 AM - 6 April, 2013
did u find out what your video ram was?
Dj Shamann 1:04 AM - 6 April, 2013
Yeah I listed it up there, 4GB
Dj Shamann 1:05 AM - 6 April, 2013
Everything runs fine now, just wondering how much of a difference anybody who's gone to HD is seeing.
the_black_one 1:07 AM - 6 April, 2013
there are two types of ram.... are you sure your video ram is 4 gig? you cant upgrade video ram on MBP. you can upgrade regular ram.

Oh shit, sorry I didn't see you were talking about video RAM, getting ready to go out so I'm reading out of the corner of my eye,

Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB

you should be good....

HD vids kill my one laptop...it just cannot handle them. 2007 MBP 2gig ram RadeonX1600: 256 MB SSL ME.
phatbob 1:54 AM - 6 April, 2013
I have a 13" Pro with HD 3000 graphics, and based on performance with the few HD vids I have now, I won't be moving to HD until I upgrade my machine to one with a dedicated GPU. It just works everything a little bit too hard.

If you're doing video with those specs, you absolutely must upgrade to 8 or 16gb or ram. Doing so will increase the amount of system memory available to graphics to 512mb. It's still no substitute for a dedicated card, but considering 8gb is available for basically pocket change, you would be crazy not to.

I haven't tested but I guess I would be okay.

Macbook Pro Quad Core 2GHz Intel Core i7
16GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6490M VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Intel HD Graphics 3000 VRAM (Total): 512 MB

What do you guys think?

as long as it has a vid card of 512 or more your golden and you don't really need to upgrade the ram....but hey it never hurts ands rams cheap

Just did a wedding and played their slideshow with my 2008 pre unibody mbp. Pretty sure it was hd. A ten minute slideshow, I believe was 1.2 gb. It was on my internal. Used ME.

I'm glad I wasn't mixing vids. Video ran smooth. Audio sounded like had few slight glitches.

But then again, maybe it was they way they rendered it. They gave me 4 files. Two files at 4x3, two at 16 x 9. Each had a 50% and an 80% quality. Luckily, only the 80% at 16x9 was the only one that they rendered correctly. The other files were missing huge chunks of video and audio.

HD vids are out of the question for me. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why. I have the 2012 15" 2.6 GHz MBP i7 Quad Core (Ivy Bridge) with 1gb Vram GeForce GT 650M. I have 16gb system memory with the stock 750gig 5400rpm HD and another 500gig 5400 in the optical bay. By all accounts my Macbook is a beast right? So why am I having trouble playing videos with SSL 2.4.4 and ME 2.2. I get slowdowns, choppy waveforms, and audio dropouts sometimes and sometimes it takes up to 15-20 seconds to load a video to a deck. (wi-fi and bluetooth off) Most of my videos are loaded from a 1TB 7200rpm external drive (USB 3.0). All my videos are standard def & from reputable sources (SV, & Xtendamix) and I payed for them all. No YouTube BS. They are even analysed and beatgridded in SDJ. I can't figure out why my buddy's 13" performs better with SSL than mine. (without video of course) I'm starting to think that my stock HD is the problem because other OS programs are starting to run slow and iPhoto doesn't even open. I verified the disk several times but everything seems fine. Could it be a throughput issue with the 5400rpm drive? It's gotta be a corrupt drive right? Or a problem with the RAID/ HD/ bus controller? I wish I knew more about this stuff. It takes almost 2 mins at startup! (Mountain Lion is up to date with updates)
Also, It doesn't matter what quality setting I use in ME or SSL so I don't think it's a software issue. Oh, and I have like 280gigs free space so it's not overloaded. Please help.

wow. um. virus?
Dokumentary 11:37 PM - 6 April, 2013
It's possible. How can I find out? I've never tried any Antivirus software on Mac.

Did you try running the video from your internal drive? (not the opti drive)
DJMark 12:41 AM - 7 April, 2013
Dokumentary: download SMART Utility: www.volitans-software.com

and see what it says about both your internal hard drives.

Downloading the "Combo Updater" of the latest OS update (10.8.3) and running that would be something I'd try if Smart Utility doesn't show either drive as failing or failed.
Dokumentary 10:33 PM - 9 April, 2013
Ok. I'll give it a try before doing a fresh install. Thanks DJMark.

im still using my 2010 i7 mbp with only 4gb ram and have been doing HD for well over a year with consistant 60fps output via FW800>1.5 tb seagate go pro (hub powered)

a MASSIVE factor in playing HD videos is the encoding (by the editor)
Ive come across people who are on both ends of the spectrum, 450MB 3 minute video with Keyframes every 5 frames and a max 3,000,000,000 kb
and a 35MB file, with keyframes every 150 frames and a 3,500,000 max kb at 1080? WTF?
\
I can even play them on my PC with no probs.
the latest and greatest from Mix Emergency actually significantly reduced the useage % when using HD videos.
