DJ controller with a good vinyl style jog wheel?

L'Phonik 7:23 AM - 15 January, 2013
Hey peeps!

Hoping someone can help. I'm looking for all in one dj controller which has a decent vinyl style jog wheel. I'm a little out of touch with what's out there in the controller market as i use still use turntables. I remember there was a vestax one i saw which had a pretty good simulated vinyl jog control (this was a few years ago).
Anyone have recommendations on something that is pretty decent to just throw in a backpack and have a bit of a fun spin? something that can read straight from usb or have serato plug in capabilities.

Thanks in advance guys..

Things are a'changing in the Serato camp. A lot more controllers to be supported with in the next 6 months or so. Some of these are sold with the "Serato DJ intro" program, while others are sold with the full "Serato DJ" program (better FX, more advanced looping etc.) For the intro controllers, you would need to pay $129 for the full upgrade, if you wish so.

The Itch software is basically discontinued, and Serato DJ will take over. Itch controllers will have a free Serato DJ upgrade, with the exeption of the discontinued A&H DX, and some other Denon controller, that I cannot remember ATM.

Here is an overview of all the controllers to be supported in the future: serato.com
And surely, there will be a lot more to come..

I'd say getting a good vinyl style feel fit inside your backpack is more or less impossible. The only one that comes to mind is the Numark V7. It has a dual deck switch so you can actually use one deck for both virtual deck, if you dont mind that kind of thing.

As you see there are loads of options, and your best bet would be to try them out for yourself. I recently got the Pioneer DJJ SX, and pretty happy with it. Ive spun on 1200s for about 15 years.. btw. I also own pioneer CDJ1000mk3's

I guess both the Vestax VCI100mk2 and the Denon MC2000 looks like great backpack fun though.

@Warpnote - thanks a lot brother for all this info, it's really been helpful.

The Numark V7 was what i had in mind and tried a few years back and thought it was a good vinyl simulation control - but didn't remember it wasn't an all-in-one system.

The Vestax VCI100mk2 looks like the kind of thing that would suit or maybe even a model below that as i just need it for a bit of basic portable fun. Your DJJ SX looks the bizzness tho!

Only other question i have is.. i have SSL running on my macbook - is there a way i can share and use my exisiting serato crates with another serato dj or intro or itch program?

Big thanks for your advice bro.

It's not an all in one. Warpnote is correct in saying it can control 2 decks, but there is no mixer section. You would still need to pair it with an analog mixer. Most people that own V7's would say this is a plus point (I did too when I owned one in the past) but in terms of an all in one throw it in your bag, it's not that kind of device as you;ll still need an external mixer to pair it with.

If you do go down that path, have a look at the Denon SC3900. V7 on steroids and works with SSL.

Same database.

SL, Itch, DJ & DJ Intro all use the same library. No matter which app you saved your cue points, auto gain, loops etc. they will work and be read in any Serato (DJ mixing) software.

This question gets asked a lot and it's pretty clear on the Serato website. No offence meant, just find it bizarre how often it gets asked on the forums.

My bad. I'm not on these forums very often. Thats dope - all makes sense that they can share the same libraries etc. Cheers for the heads up.

With motorised platters? Nah man. You're gonna be hard pressed finding anything like that on a small controller.

Your best bet is to demo one of the VCI's or similar sized controller and see if you can handle scratching etc. on a static platter.

I can cut on a CDJ etc. but it doesn't feel the same as a motorised platter. It never will. But, if you can still perform the bulk of what you want and a comfortable with the trade off for the sake of convenience, then it might be doable.

Best bet is to head into a shop and demo one. Bring your laptop so you have your library with you.

What forty said. The other options would be the NS7 (its heavy...) or using something like the Denon SC3900 with SSL (would still need a mixer, and also do instant doubles if only using one physical deck...)

I wish someone would make a portable scratch friendly controller. Even if it was 7" but like the SC3900. Even 1 deck n mixer......just so I could cut on the go...
