Don't understand why these mega-mainstream clubs that cater exclusively to jersey shore fist-pump types keep trying to book underground acts on weekends?

At what point does a DJ not have to read a crowd?

I get it that Shadow got kicked and all, but is it because he was playing for the wrong crowd? I realize that he gets booked for whatever... but is he so good that he only plays one type of set and that's it?

I figured a seasoned DJ would adapt to any situation... or otherwise choose not to play.

shadow's never been a club dj - he's a performance dj that's been doing his thing for over 20 years. It's not like he was a club DJ rocking diverse crowds all these years and just decided to start playing feature sets - he's been doing the Shadow/quannam/45 set thing since the early 90s.

It's completely on the promoter and club for booking the wrong kind of dj for the wrong kind of crowd in the wrong venue.

It's like going to an expensive fine dining restaurant and getting mad that the food doesn't taste like mcdonalds.

yea but you get to that level, you shouldn't really have to worry about playing expressly for the crowd.

Again, he can choose NOT to play if he doesn't think he's in the right venue. Artists are known to cancel for many reasons.... DJ's can to.

Actually, it may not be the end of the argument there. What if it was his manager who made the mistake and not the venue? Don't forget the manager gets a cut of what he makes so perhaps he booked them there on purpose FOR THE MONEY.

Anyway, it could have been miscommunication or, maybe, they expected a different kind of crowd because, after all, he was on the flyer/commercials or whatever promo route they used.... again, someone fucked up. But, as a DJ, you also have the right to say no - I will not perform tonight.

This I agree with. I think they should have just let him do his thing and if the crowd was no pleased, oh well.... lesson learned. Kickin' him off was probably the worse choice they (venue) could have made.

the top40 open format sounds originated in america, and this forum is like little america, so i understand the lack of understanding about underground electronic scene

DJ's who play only one type of sound does existed, and not little , check out armin van buuren, paul van dyk , richie hawtin, ricardo villalobos

they are producers? wrong they are DJ first before they even produce, they play on vinyl and rock crowds with obsecure records that no radio wanna play

asking DJ shadow to read and follow the crowd wants its not likely, he is not a top40 DJ, he played in indonesia before with his won style in a super commercial club , but he rock it hard , even with 30 minutes of ambient noises and sounds , the place is packed full of maybe 3000ish people, the club capacity is 2000 and boy that night talk about over crowding , the next day enferno comes with his top 40 style and still rocked the crowd hard

its not the DJ fault the club cant promote the show to a more suited audience, for a DJ in a class like shadow, the crowd that has to follow not the other way around

these DJ's .... hell even me,usually have clausal on their contract that stated they only play a particular sound, a particular set that cater to a particular crowd, not everybody is doing open format , actually open format is only huge in america, not much in other parts of the world

for example , other than hiphop clubs , here where i am , clubs are specified based on what genre they play , theres a house club, a trance club, a techno club, and progressive house club

you cant come to for say stadium jakarta and ask for rihanna, they will laugh im sure

booking someone like shadow is more akin to booking a band - they do their thing, play their set and play their style (whether it was rehearsed or not). The tour he's on is specifically billed as him playing unknown, rare, and unreleased tracks...

You don't book paul mccartney and then ask him to do rihanna covers all night because more mainstream people showed up than you expected...

What the club probably should have done is booked him and made it an early show so he can do his thing for his crowd and then turn it over to the top40/bottle service people after 11 or something.

again, there's a difference being the working dj that is expected to keep a bar pumping because that's their job and a DJ/producer/performer who is being booked to do their thing that people are purchasing tickets to see them do their thing.

Chances are either the show wasn't well promoted, or most of the people who would be interested in seeing someone like shadow didn't want to go to a club like Mansion.

This is no different from DJ Jazzy Jeff getting kicked off in vegas or mark farina getting his set cancelled at the last minute because a few people in the bottle service section complained.

Mansion has different nights with all sorts of dudes playing. This month they have Seth Troxler, Sidney Samson, Aoki, hell Carl Cox is playing the NYE party and next Friday Craze is headlining. Usually Fridays are open format night and Sat are house/electro nights. Same night Joe Maz from DiscoTech opened and he ended up taking over the decks.

I'm with Sixx, as an artist you also have to know what are you getting booked for. If it's not your thing then this place has no issue catering to the folks who are spending money on bottles, and next weekend when another group of folks shows up to spend money on bottles no one will really care what happened this weekend and they'll jam to the next headliner that place brings in, because they do every weekend.

Shadow shouldn't have had to "read a crowd" at all. He is doing a nationwide tour, it should be the promoters job to make sure what act they are booking fits in with the crowd at the club. Its like, if you are touring the country as a band and playing different venues then you don't change your material cause a certain crowd might not like it as much as another crowd did on another night, you bang that shit out the same and if they don't like it then Fuck em. What do people think Shadow should have done, played a commercial set?. That is not gonna happen. I think he done what I would have done, played music I believed in and if the crowd don't like it then that is the promoters fault for not knowing what his customers want. yup you are right, thats why Tritonal plays more set around the world then their hometown texas , i dont think Trance is huge in america , and by the way they are the hottest rising star in the world of trance right now, and it blew people mind when they know they are from US

If you are DJ Shadow and you know the room is full of 70 percent commercial music fans who ain't there to listen to you per se and 30 percent fans of yours who know what to expect and buy your music on the regular then adapting your set to please a bunch of bottle service douches instead of staying true to your fans is unthinkable. Let me out my two cents, I from New york and there is alot of underground DJ's around here that only play underground House and have their following its small but they have it. I know and it has happened to me I play what the crowd wants to hear because I adapt but the underground DJ mentality its so weird..

Really no lie, i talk to them and they sure are f*** stuborn lol... They just like to play for themselves. Sometimes I can't event tell what song is going to make the crowd move? They play songs they like or produced and hope the crowd is going to like it..

Back to story I had this dude come in with a house set after I was done but really deep/tech house set and people were getting impatient.Owner decided to bring him because he promised people and it would be packed.... Place was packed but the ratio of his people and my people were uneven that eventually people started to chant for me or leave... So I Had to get back and finish the night..

Like said before Underground DJ are f*** stuborn and will play for themselves no matter what!

And that kind of sums up the situation here.

Take a look at the Facebook page for that club. They promoted the DJ Shadow gig for weeks. They embedded videos, biographies. They sold tickets for that show on the basis that DJ Shadow would be playing, and playing 'DJ Shadow music'.

This is NOT a case of a DJ being booked to read the crowd that happens to turn up. This is a case of a DJ being booked in order to ATTRACT a certain type of crowd. If enough of that crowd were not in attendance, then that is 100% the fault of the booker who failed to understand their audience.

me ? i hangout mostly in hiphop clubs and friends with a shitload of open format DJ's , i respect their skills and crowd reading ability , but for myself i have my own style and sound and after paying dues from 99 this past 2 years im enjoying the fruit of my "stubbornness"

Saw Shadow last spring in Seattle. He absolutely murdered it. It all comes down to expectations set and agreed upon by the promoter/venue/artist management. It happens to the big names representing a spectrum of genres more often than you would think.

Of course Shadow could have a top 40 crate just in case but the ripples of him going that direction to please the crowd would do far more damage to his brand than getting kicked of the decks at one club. I applaud his integrity, continued evolution and commitment to doing what he does.

Poisonous one and black one. You both are just DJs, that's it. DJ Shadow is one of the most influential producers in Hip-Hop history and has made one of the greatest Hip-Hop albums of all time. When you DJ, very few, if any people are turning up solely for you. When Shadow turns up, most are there to see a living legend. The general consensus is that the crowd on the dance floor were digging what Shadow was doing but the bottle service crowd who hold a terrible amount of power in clubs were not feeling the non top 40 vibes. How you cannot see the difference between a run of the mill DJ performance as apposed to someone like Shadow is beyond comprehension.

Because I've done my share amount of gigs in both the underground and the mainstream. Even if no one pays to see me, doesn't mean I'm gonna bore them to death. Ask ANY big underground DJ from Sasha, Digweed, Armin, Luciano, Tenaglia and they will ALL tell you the importance of reading the crowd. Reading the crowd doesn't mean you have to sell out and play Top 40. If you don't understand the importance of reading the crowd, than you shouldn't be a DJ. It's as simple as that.

I would like to thank all of my fellow Djs for your support, and to those of you who are charging me with failing to read and adjust to the crowd, well theres a bit of truth there to. Its impossible to please everyone, especially when your goal is to put on a unique entertainment experience.
My audience was in attendence that night and appeared to be enjoying the atmosphere I was creating, unfortunatley there were others who were not satisfied and those people had the power to pull the plug. As a Dj it is your job to drive the bus but the reality is that at the end of the day someone else owns the bus and the all mighty dollar powers it. The only thing you can do as an artist is learn from the experience and move onto the next show. My show isn't for everyone, if it was it wouldn't be as unique and I wouldn't be me.

Where would we be today if Grandmaster Flash decided to play the whole song instead of looping the breaks, if Grandwizard Theodore just let the record play instead of grabbing it and scratching, or if DJ AM just played the specific genre that a club was used to hearing. DJing is where its at today because cats like these took risks and stepped out of the norm in front of live crowds that may or may not have appreciated it at the time.

I'll always have mad respect for people that follow their soul as an artist instead of taking the easy way out to appeal to what is popular.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with playing the top 40 stuff for the sheep. I do it and I know most of us in this forum do it. My whole point is don't be afraid to step outside the comfort zone and throw a few wild cards in there. You never know what the crowd might feel. If you're afraid to take chances with the music you play then you're afraid to set yourself apart from everyone else that puts the title "DJ" in front of their name.

As far DJs that turned producer and now play all their own...they are still DJs so I feel in the same situation they probably know enough to be like "this won't work out" I've been in that situation as a mobile/club DJ. So down the road I changed it up and when I find a weakness I study it and load up "just in case" crates. I'm a hiphop, r&b and top 40 DJ but I still have rock, house, jazz, etc "just in case" crates so if I find myself in a unexpected situation I can keep the show going. Guess when you get to a certain level, DJs decide to only do what they like but I still believe that I'm merely for hire entertainment so it's my job to maintain all expects of music the best I can.

That is called professionalism for mobile DJs and some club DJs. But where is that line drawn? What if you are killing a crowd at a house club and the owner comes up and says someone in the VIP wants you to play rock and roll for the rest of the night? Do you just say "yes sir" and lose the crowd and have everyone swear off paying to see you again?
What if you are touring to support your new album and suddenly some random employee of the club tells you to change genre? Should lil Wayne be working on a few jazz, cumbia, and rock songs for his tour? Would that be called "professionalism"?

Alot of people here are missing the branding issue. Sure covering all of your bases is the professional dj....but in a since at a certin level your not a professional dj your a professional busniessman. In this case dj shadows not a pro dj hes a professional dj shadow. Hes accomplished what true artists AND good busniessmen and hes distuinguished himself and but a brand around what he does. The bottle service big wigs arent his target demo even if for that night theyre paying him..his target demo is in the keep it real dj culture. If anything getting kicked off the decks was a huge win for him because it got him national attn and solidified his brand with his base

Ah this thread continues to deliver.

If you're talking about DJs like Craze and Q-bert as legends, you really should know who Shadow is.
For getting kicked off the decks to staying true to his style, is going to look a lot better for him than starting to play top40. The people at the club that didn't know who he was will already have forgotten about the whole thing, his actual fans will remember it. Maybe they'll be annoyed they paid and didn't get a full set, but that would be directed at the club anyway.

I've come up with the perfect solution for high-profile DJ/Artists who find themselves in the situation Shadow was in...

When it becomes clear that whatever kind of set you normally play isn't going to work at some venue with a critical mass of Bottle Service Douches....

1. Remove headphones, put on the ugliest rodent mask you can find;

2. Put on a pre-mixed CD of the biggest Hot Garbage tracks from the past few months;

3. Jump up and down madly and make irrelevant adjustments to mixer knobs;

4. Play drops every few minutes that say "Deeejaaayy Deead Raaat!".

Branding (and performance fee) intact, Bottle Service Douches mollified.

I did go to the George st one when I was a kid, that's the last I remember of Taco Bell in Australia.

Red rooster is a chicken shop, pretty similar to KFC except they try and go for the healthy angle.
They actually do some fish and other seafood now as well.

Dedicated seafood chains but? I don't think there are any. They all seem to be independant.

The 'Real bacon burgers' (or something similar to that) are pretty epic.
I find red roosters a little disconcerting though because they are always freestanding building built to the exact same plans. So no matter where you are. If you're in one it's the exact same building inside and out.
Most place are at least a little different.

If i ever get the chance to play a big club and get booted off, I'd be proud if it was because my music is "too future". Seems like a good comment on the state of music and innovation in some bigger clubs.

I still think it's more of a booking agent fault than anything, if the club in question follows the same format every week. It probably should've been checked that Shadow would fit in into it because in reality, only a small amount of the people there that night would have seen his name on the flyer and went because of that.
The rest would just be the people that go to the club every week anyway.

Well let me ask this, its a situation i have to deal with quite often thats similar to shadows, same question different senario..who draws the line and at what point. On pretty much every holiday me and severalother area djs get together and throw a party at a club that would otherwise be close. Its an oppritunity to play what WE want rather tjan the bs we normally have to. The problem is alot of the time the venue we throw it at has a crowd that isnt into that music.....so its OUR party and theres a musical theme but people shoe up not carring about that demanding THEIR music. So whos right and whos wrong here?

This is one of the big points I think, if something is advertised with a specific kind of music. It really seems like it's up to the people going to decide whether that is something they want to go to or not. Rather than go to an event and then try and change it to suit you by requesting music that was never going to be played.
Fair enough to maybe request stuff in the same genre, but if it's completely opposite from what you've actually advertised the night to be- I think it's up to them to find a new venue.

We have that here as well with 'Burger King'
In most cases it's actually called 'Hungry Jacks' but every once in a while you'll come across one branded as burger king.
I used to live in a place that had one of each about 10 minutes walk apart. It was really interesting how many people didn't even notice everything was the same and would actually go out of their way to walk to the other one, from right near the other.

This I agree with. I think they should have just let him do his thing and if the crowd was no pleased, oh well.... lesson learned. Kickin' him off was probably the worse choice they (venue) could have made.

Good point though. I would want to believe that with DJ's of this profile that their management would do a lil better at their job too. I just don't know if during the negotiations Mansion management were like "does he play open format/top 40 and will play for that crowd" then Shadow's management were just like "yep" book it!

Apparently this happened to Shadow in Atlanta also...so could be his management. But this has happened at Mansion before too lol...could be both their faults.

I just know if I was in charge of bookings for a place as big as Mansion then I'd know who I was booking and be on top of my job.
