There's a mini IEEE1394 connection on the front of my laptop. I'm guessing this is the 4-pin. If I buy a firewire/usb external can I just use a 6-to-4 pin cable?
I was looking at this external

I think the 6 pin supports bus-power and the 4 pin does not.
I have never heard of 9 pin firewire, however I have heard of Firewire 800, which supports twice the speed. Firewire 800 has a different connector than the others.

firewire 800 is the 6 pin
6 pin to 4 pin just downsteps to firewire 400

This is wrong, Like DJ Unique says, 4 pin is the mini connector for firewire 400 it has no power, 6 pin is the large connector for firewire 400 it has 2 extra pins for the power.
A 9 pin cable is for the firewire 800, more info here en.wikipedia.org

bus-power provides power to devices, some smaller harddrives will support it as will most firewire soundcards. If you only have a 4 pin firewire port (most laptops do because of the size) you will need a power supply for your device
