Last night I took another whirl at getting video to work again, after reading a known issues thread that said the workaround was having the audio cache maxed out. I fired up the laptop and got bizzy messing with screen refresh, audio cache, set video to audio, built an overview on audio on the fly. I didn't ouch the NVIDIA settings at all, I opened it, browsed and realized that nothing really in there could explain this disastrous CPU maxed out.
Then it magically worked.. the CPU cycles started dropping to the 70-80 percentile.. Hmm... WTF caused this?? I closed SSL, reopened. Sonofbitch, CPU maxed again. The next half hour was retracing - searching for the magical secret sequence that lowered my CPU to safe levels. No dice.
IT'S BEEN 3 MONTHS SINCE RELEASE..... this is getting downright upsetting. I'm still looking for something that represents a FINAL release that I paid good money for.

Yeah okay, but I've also read at least five posts from Serato people in the last few months, where they clearly state they recommend Macs because of fewer compatibility issues.
I was obviously just kidding around with you in that earlier reply, but I'm not now...Windows has *always* entailed a greater risk of compatibility issues, especially when dealing with an application that's pushing the envelope of resource-requirements.
That was true in the early 90's (when the first serious attempts were made to have pro-audio apps running on Windows 3.X), and it's the same thing today with Video-SL dealing with either Windows XP from 2001 or Windows Abortion from 2007.
"It is what it is".

even if it had even slightly crossed his mind earlier that, hey maybe i should buy a mac. no fucking way is he ever gonna buy a mac now. just on general principle. kagen is gonna live through life preaching mac for-never til i die!

I'd be frustrated and disappointed just as you are Kagen. I've been doing video for quite some time now with before Video-SL dropped using the Numark Virtual Vinyl package (VDJ with a Numark skin and a Numark soundcard). It didn't work that great but I was able to increase my earnings and do something that others were not doing. I'm a VIP member for VDJ and a Mac Beta tester. I had to install Winblows on my Macbook Pro and run Bootcamp just to get the software to work properly. After a year of owning and using the software via ductape there is still not a suitable Mac version. In other words I FEEL YOUR PAIN. Sucks having to wait for a fix to a program which you payed for and planned to be using.

Ooops....spelling accident. Winblows actually should be Windows.

no... I refuse
so it seems that the only solution that people tend to state here... too much.. is... buy a mac..
This software clearly states that is made for mac or pc... the solution shouldn't be .. buy a mac... They NEED to fix the software problems.
So if I buy a new stereo for my car it doesn't exactly install correctly (even thought it was supposed to) in the car... should I buy to new car to fit the stereo when I am completely fine with my car make and model of choice.
----------
here is a small list of other solutions for everyone out there:
quit smoking
quit drinking
quit doing drugs
quit downloading free porn
eat organic
vote
donate to those in need
stop swearing
have safe sex
be monogamous
exercise regularly
adopt a pet from a kill shelter
read
respect everyone else's views
practice preventative maintenance on your car
BUY ALL YOUR SOFTWARE
BUY ALL YOUR VIDEOS & MUSIC

I have to agree with Kagen, the advice that he should buy a Mac SUCKS. Really it SUCKS.
VSL is advertised to work on a Mac and PC. So every user who has problems with a PC meeting the minimum requirements has every goddamn reason to be pissed.
Again: Those Mac fanboys, please shut up. It won't help Kagen.
Also the hint that the Developers said on the forum 5 times that they say Mac is the preferred way, it DOES NOT HELP Kagen. It has also practically NO impact, cause the minimum requirements list PCs as well. Kagens laptop meets the minimum requirements. If it still does not work, it is not acceptable. Period.

I like how MAC is called a cult, but most PC fanboys have never touched a mac. Blind loyalty, here is some cool aid. We are all going to take a sip at the same time.
I used to think that I could do the same thing on a PC that anyone could do on Mac. Then I actually coughed up the dough for one (a mac) and can now admit that I was wrong.
You guys are trying to go Formula 1 with go-carts. You can modify your go-carts all you want, but they are still just go-carts.
How much was the box of janky that says Dell on it?

I have touched a MAC inappropriately. ;-)
....
I have no problems with MAC's
I am sure they work wonderful...
Just shut up about it is all..
This software Serato Scratch Live & Video Plug In is for BOTH platforms.
If it was just for a MAC then us "PC fanboys" wouldn't have anything to say if it wasn't working.
so.. here is the breakdown:
MAC's are awesome, great, beautiful, for novice computer users, brainless, plug & play, etc...
PC's are awesome, great, beautiful, for advance computer users, can be configured in many ways, cheaper to build to specs, plug & play, etc..
Unless the forums have stated a separate place for PC users & MAC users... we share this space. The main topic was trying find a solution to the PC side of things... not push a MAC solution. There are TONS of software for encoding video, editing, etc... only for PC... I never tell MAC users... buy a PC so you can REALLY edit video better...
This why I think you guys are a cult. As soon as a PC user says... I have an issue with this software not working correctly... you guys are ready to pounce! "Buy A MAC!" must be the most typed phrase from MAC users here!! If I said.. I had premarital sex.. a religious fanatic would jump in and say "you're going to hell unless you follow these rules & accept the lord, etc..." ... same thing guys!!!
All I ask is when someone starts a topic based around a PC thing... let it go... let's work on a solution for the PC thing..

I am sorry, but that is some fanboy talk right there. You are correct that this software is for both platforms, but there has always been a difference between Macs and PCs. You can get almost any program to run on any hardware/software combination, but how many of those situations are ideal?
Finally we have a program (VSL) that really tests the difference between tightly integrated hardware/software and "cheaper", "easier to configure" hardware/software.
Do not mistake the hours you spend "tweaking" your computer as being an advanced user.

Actually that does not speak for you.
Thats b/s and you know that.
Using a final version SSL never crashed on me. I laughed on my DJ colleage (who IS a fanboy) and who reported how SSL crashed a couple of times on his Apple.
Does this mean Macs are worse? No.
So stop this "this is better that is worse discussion". It is a waste of time.

Actually that does not speak for you.
Not sure what you mean here. I was implying that much of my opinion about macs came from thinking they were overpriced for virtually the same thing. Now that I spent the money on one, I understand the value. I feel the same way about DJ products: you can get a 4 ch Barringer with effects for $200. Is it the same as the Pioneer that does the same thing, but costs 5-7 times the price. NO
Thats b/s and you know that.
BS? VSL has no problem hitting 100% CPU usage on macs and PCs. Which one is handling it better consistently?
Does this mean Macs are worse? No.
Are Macs perfect? NO
but somewhere along the line, we got the idea that PCs could catch up to them, and that is some BS...
I used to play some wicked sets on some janky thrift store turntables, hooked up to some thrift store receivers and some mismatched speakers. Just because I could pull it off does not mean it was the best gear for the job.

Now that I spent the money on one, I understand the value. I feel the same way about DJ products: you can get a 4 ch Barringer with effects for $200. Is it the same as the Pioneer that does the same thing, but costs 5-7 times the price. NO

Thats b/s and you know that.
I don't think it's totally bs. Leaving out the judgemental "cheaper" comment (because even some higher-end Windows PC's seem to be having problems), I think it's pretty much obvious common sense that, when we're talking about a real-time application like Video-SL that's very resource-intensive, there's a lot less chances for problems with a tightly-controlled/limited hardware-variation platform.
For Windows PC's, with a much larger variety of different possible internal hardware combinations, it would be much more time-consuming and difficult for Serato to be sure that all the different combinations work well with this software. I imagine that thorough internal testing of all the different possible configurations is nearly impossible for a company of relatively small size.
In terms of both CPU usage and interaction with different video cards (and their drivers) Video-SL is way different than just SSL, and it's not very surprising to me that the Windows version would be showing a lot more issues...especially this early into the development of that software.
My interest, by the way, is not "platform-judgement" at all...I just think (as has been said in these forums and elsewhere many times before) that people who want to use specific products should seek out the supporting products most likely to work best. As of today, talking about Video-SL specifically, it would appear that the Mac platform is the safest choice for people wanting to jump right into it.
I really don't think it's a waste of time if people just stick to the facts, and leave out the embellishments.

What does that has to do with "that really tests the difference between tightly integrated hardware/software and "cheaper", "easier to configure" hardware/software."?

There are plenty of cpu intensive video based software products out there that run FLAWLESS on a PC. I have been mixing video for over two years on a PC using timecode vinyls with Virtual DJ with NO problems. So it is a developer's problem not the consumer to go get a MAC (the solves all) to make this product work. They should have NEVER released it for PC users if they didn't have it working right for PC users.

Then by all means, keep using Virtual DJ then. I'd be the last person to advise someone to abandon something that's working for them.
Maybe so. Might be worth taking a deep breath and reminding yourself that Video-SL is very much a Version 1.0 (well, now 1.0.1) product. Was Virtual DJ as stable as you're saying it is now on *its* 1.0 release? I'd have to guess probably not. Furthermore, I'd have to guess you still find something lacking in it, since you're both *here*, and apparently trying to get Video-SL running on your PC...
By the way, *I* have never said using a Mac "solves all". I'm the one saying "use what works best". At this point, it seems pretty obvious that, talking specifically about running Video-SL *right now*, Macs seem to be causing fewer problems for people. You can point fingers all you want, cast aspersions on Serato's software-development, whatever...seems like if you're really interested in a solution though, you'd either "use what works" or get busy in the Video-SL public-beta area.

I don't own it.
I am interested in how it may handle as compared to VDJ.
I like being very diverse with my dj tools.
Like I had said plenty of times before... I don't hate macs.... just the users.. just kidding.
I am glad macs work with less problems right now. Makes me think they based their development of a mac based instead keeping it as an equal platform release.
Shit happens. I am sure with their resources it will be ironed out soon.
I used Serato when it was first released and liked it then. I just moved onto the video era when I decided over two years ago to be actively using VDJ instead. I have been using it since version 3. Shortly after they locked down the video capabilities. It works great. Good features, compatible with many things, etc. It just lacks timecode tightness!! I am actually a beta tester for them too and suggested many times about a more club dj version without all the "automix" bs. And to support tagging with video too. I may be wrong but who knows... I believe their development staff is small compared to the Serato team. So they may have limited resources and have a different vision than most dometic (USA) club dj's have. It is a European company after all.
I plan on getting my hands on the "have to buy" mixer in order to dabble with this product. It is still a shame that this video product is not midi compatible with other dj mixers so you can just use it without the ttm57. Just better when you have choices for your own taste.
still not buying a mac... ;-)
I just spent over 2K for a Toshiba laptop with dual nivdia 8600gt video cards and upgraded BOTH hard drives in it to TWO 320 gig hard drives & maxed the RAM to 4 gigs. This laptop is a beast and I can't wait to see how Serato Video will be on it.

That argument is moot. Seratos motto is "we dont tell dates, because we dont want to rush something which aint stable and ready yet". If 1.0 is not stable enough, following that motto, they should have waited.
Also, SSL 1.0 was very stable! That is the bar to compare with.
True, and I couldn't agree anymore. I am using VSL on a Mac as well, b/c I know it works. But if I didnt had a Mac and had bought a PC (which works with VSL according to Serato's announced minimum requirements) and SSL had not worked problem, man... I'd be pissed as hell, and I would have every right to be pissed.
Long talk... Kagen needed help with his setup. He did not ask for any Mac advice... he knows that he could buy a Mac. He did not ask for VDJ, cause he decided to stay with SSL/VSL. So any comments like "you should have gotten a mac, had bough VDJ" or whatever is absolutely not productive.

I don't know that any mods have said that? Our goal genuinely is to have Video-SL run just as well on Windows as it does on OS X. There is an update coming that should dramatically improve performance on Windows.
Certainly it would have been better if the Windows performance was top notch in the initial release. But we can't go back and change that now. Instead we're working hard on making it better for future releases. Hopefully you'll see some of these soon.

Ummm.. I'm confused. Quoting a mod is bad because? They are an employee and highly regarded and it would seem natural to assume that their informed opinion matters? Or that they have inside info that they could be hinting about? Or that they could have some statistical resources that would dictate their attitude toward certain products...
I think the mods carry some serious weight, and many people hang on every word, like "soon" and "mac". I might be wrong, but those are some of their favorites to use.

What makes the CPU max out?
Is it the video drivers?
Is it because VSL using quicktime as opposed to Windows media center?
Would it be benifical to create two versions of VSL one for mac that uses quicktime and the other for a PC that uses windows media player?

Webster's: Janky (ja-nky)
(1) To "un-jankify" a video product released by Rane Serato in hopes that many dj's who paid their hard earned $200 in this recession economy can have a reliable, cutting edge piece of software that performs at the level of it's cousin scratchlive.
(2) Not tested on PC's...
(3) Non-working on PC's...
Used in a sentence:
K. Smith: Hey what up Kagen? I just bought VSL. What do you think about it?
Kagen: It's janky K. Smith, straight up janky...
K. Smith: Damn....

I was making a jokes about MAC as an acronym and then you decide to put in your not so funny two cents in using my name... seems to be a pattern with you after I post somewhere... and then you keep provoking it on.

you need to chill out and realize when you post comments sometimes it seems very much like you are provoking something. Sometimes it's better to just keep your lame comments to yourself and move along.

I see... not answering my question. You can deport't a US citizen. Research before you open up your mouth.

And, if you don't like jokes, don't make jokes then. It wasn't an attack... it was a joke... unlike YOUR ATTACK towards me.
But seriously, don't b that mr tough internet guy... Vegas ain't that far if you really wanna make something of it.

I am not that mr. tough internet guy...
I do like jokes... but when I joke usually I try to make about a general topic.. not toward someone in particular... unless they provoke it. Then that is when it can get ugly. if it has happened in the past then let it be that... the past.
let's just squash it..

ya, fuckin hilarious..... like watching a guy get kicked in square in the balls funny.
So funny that a we still don't have a solution for PC after 4 and a half months, so fucking funny that I own evenly spec'd mac and Dell, and know the real story about how long it takes for a mac and pc to do similar tasks, so funny that I know how much the mac sucks in some departments and the die hards are oblivious to reality, but hell - you think you know it all.. gots to be extra hilarious knowing how much I got gouged for the mac in price compared to the Dell. ya, Real funny.
Hey Al, this whole thing is a real HOOT, huh.

More like getting a guy kicked in the balls over and over again...I see why you are little pissed. i bet they have it fixed already and they are just taking some extra time to torture you and PC.
by the way, I just sent Serato some more money for a box of janky.
I have faith.
If you don't like getting kicked in the balls, stop spreading your legs. They will get it right.

buying a mac is the only real solution. so funny though, i've had friends who are the most DIE HARD PC users and they all got new PC computers for serato. One by one, they eventually got fed up with messing around with their PCs, tweaking shit, trying to get them to work, etc and they all ended up buying Macs.
I always think it's funny when they say to me how easy, smooth, crash proof their mac is,.. and I'm like duh. I told you the same shit a long time ago.
Now I'm going the other way with it. I'm going to start telling PC users to buy a better PC and watch them fuss with it.
