Discobee 8:53 PM - 31 October, 2007
I do....a select few freestyle tracks with other 80's genre music makes for a lively set at some of the places that I've played at recently. I just dug up Dino "Nighttime Lovekind" in my stash, good stuff.

i just finished a high energy club with 60 tracks and 30 of them are freestyle.
i will post it soon.

detroit was one of the most popular places to hear freestyle.

i cant play freestyle at the club because of rap music right now.
all the young people dont like positive music. ( im being honest )

Actually somebody sent me a MySpace bulletin about a Freestyle gig starting on Thursdays at Grand Central down in Harmonie Park, right around the corner from DNA where Herrera spins. It was a no cover thing and I was seriously thinking about checking it out.

If I remember some big names in Freestyle were coming in for a upcoming party.

i may have to check it out.

I guess they are bringing in Noel, Coro, and Safire for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (it is the background of the MySpace page - that's what fucked me up and confused me, I thought Grand Central was all Freestyle too.

Damn, these guys make it hard to find out shit about their parties. If I didn't know a little about webdesign they would be fucked as promoters:

Here's the whole flyer - it's at the Masonic Temple:

FUCK Ticks are $45 in advance??? Is Safire gonna blow me too for that price?
How can they make money - freestyle isn't that big here.....

Don't worry young 'un. I grew up on the s**t and didn't know it was called freestyle for the longest time. =P

Just think of songs like "let the music play" from Shannon. It's songs with that type of "sound". That moog bass synth, those tight programmed drums.... it was very popular music from the 80s. It seems to still be very popular in Cali. I haven't played a freestyle song in YEARS. But some people say they still play it and get a good crowd reaction from it. I don't know if I believe 'em tho... lol

i played science - masquerade last friday @ divne and the women where dancing.
lol

CMOS -- latin rascals use to play in a garage down the street from me. (soutwest detroit ) they would practice everyday ( loud as hell. lol!

they went to new york and blew up for a while.

everyone has to leave detroit to blow up......... lol
AMF 6:04 PM - 1 November, 2007

I don't think people will appreciate freestyle unless they grew up listening, grooving to that stuff.

Freestyle seems to be popular amongst the latino and filipino crowd and up in the bay area.
stevie o 6:48 PM - 1 November, 2007
Most freestyle artists are Latino probably 95 percent except information society ( which isnt even freestyle) Shannon and nyobe are black and I think lil suzy is Italian other than that mostly all others were Latino. And a little off topic cynthia used to be hot back in the day, she kind of let herself go. And she's also the cousin of k7. Don't know where I was goin with that just sharing useless info

I think "Springlove" is the prototypical Freestyle song. Or maybe "Show Me" or "Fascinated".
"Leet The Music Play" is probably the best example for the uninitiated.

I wish I could play more Freestyle. A few months ago, a chick was wanting Debbie Deb, so I tried "When I Hear Music". Cleared the floor, had to mix out of that shit fast...

i agree you cant play freestyle to a young crowd they will look at you like your being gay ( but that is because the radio has them brain washed bro ).

know i understand my parents being mad when i played eazy e,nwa and esham!!!

the music is getting worse and crippiling are young generation's mind.

i was in the mall last week and this young girl came behind me and started freaking me singing crank dat. i looked at her and wanted to put her in a head lock!!! ( i dont hit women ) but i was!!!! lol

a couple weeks ago my manager at the club told me not to play rap at all.so i started playing break, house, techno, trance and i had so many request coming for rap it was crazzy!!
i enjoy that music but the young crowd dont!
thats because of radio and the branding of the record labels.
CMOS 8:55 PM - 1 November, 2007

WHAT?!?! That's crazy! Tell him to comare the lyrics of any Freestyle song to any Top 40 Rap/Hip-Hop.

It didn't have anything to do with the songs. I think he likes freestyle, its the "crowd". I dunno what the hell he was talking about.

I put "Let The Music Play" in my prepare window at the club tonight, but didn't get around to playing it. I gotta remember to throw it in tomorrow night. I also gave some thought to putting "Don't Stop The Rock" in my prepare window, but didn't. At leat this thread has me thinking about Freestyle...

3.14 mentioned "Running", which reminds me I actually did play a couple minutes of "What's On Your Mind" last weekend...
dj shadow from detroit 4:57 PM - 3 November, 2007

I love freestyle. Great for fun & practice, but you might want to trim down a few small blocks if you're actually playing out.

[Note: How can I copy an ITunes playlist if I want to post it???]

I have what I consider the "best of" Freestyle, but I don't know how to post it!

If you are on a Mac you can select that Playlist, Go File>Print and choose Song listing> Text Only

and then Print to PDF and it will open in Preview (or Adobe Reader). Then you can copy the text and paste it here.

Depending where I'm spinning I'm still dropping a freestyle set. Out here in NY and FL there still is a crowd for it. Guidos and Latinos love it. It's like a flashback drug.
DJ Young Herrera 8:10 PM - 10 November, 2007
Arabs love it too!
dj shadow from detroit 8:53 PM - 10 November, 2007
lol----yea they love it more then mexicans here in detroit area.

( just stating the facts ) lol
Logisticalstyles 9:37 PM - 10 November, 2007
I think freestyle in the south is a little different that it is in other parts of the country. I'm from NY, and I grew up listening to most of the songs listed. I never thought of them as freestyle. I called it, either "Latin House" or "Hip-House". When I moved to Atlanta and started to DJ in Skating Rinks they asked for Freestyle and it was songs like "Egyptian Lover", "Electric Kingdom", "Clear", "Perfect Beat" with a little Debbie Deb.

I still play Freestyle either way you look at it, but it's usually my transition to some booty shake classics.
bourbonstmc 11:35 PM - 10 November, 2007
When I moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi in the mid 90's, I was overwhelmed with the number of requests for "Spring Love", "Egypt, Egypt", "The Promise" and "Security".

Wow took me back to when I broke alot of those joints in the 80's! being in between NYC and Philly spinning in Jersey you had best of the both worlds spinning these jewels! The Dance Music by Tom Silverman listed the BPM's if yoy didn't know how to count them your own! Anyway some the best produced music ever is freestyle as it's been named now back just was club music I can't see how if you drop it correctly there would be a problem I turn young dj's on to gems all the time!
djflaco23 2:14 AM - 20 December, 2007
ah man u got it going on here...i actually DJ a freestyle night here in orlando fl, every 1st Friday we have different artist come and sing live....we just had giggles, but she sucked...we had Noel, he was really good....and David From Nice n wild...he was good..but man i love taken it back to the oldskool.
dj shadow from detroit 2:58 AM - 20 December, 2007
yea freestyle music is the shiznit!!

for some reason i had a urge to make a freestyle cd.

i wish it was top 40 right now instead of all this garbage coming out ( duffle bag boy, soldier boy ).i always try to fit in old school freestyle when i play.
whenever i do some young kids ( 18-24 ) ask me to quit playing techno!! lol
and then i get in defensive mode and tell them its not techno.

the young generation is poisoned!!!

We do monthly Freestyle concerts - we bring in all the Freestyle Acts, Lil Suzy, George Lamond, Coro, Stevie B, Judy Torres, Cover Girls, Cynthia, Lisette Melendez, Corina and so on....

I actually hosted a Freestyle show every Friday on the radio too, but I quit the station back in October...

I have a ton of freestyle mixes and pics from our events on my DJ website.
Feel free to check them all out

yeah I would say it would be death to the dj if you played for 25& under in the bay area...but we still do some freestyle appearances and drop of a few songs here in there, especially in san jose...

I hear its still playable in texas and in miami...latinos stand up...
dj buterd hams 8:08 PM - 17 December, 2008
Freestyle is a must ion any party in southern cali. Definatly what someone said up top . The latin crowd 20 plus ask for it all the time

freestyle is the shit!!! i try to sneak a few in after midnight. gotta be careful though, cuz if it doesn't have autotune it's not a go!
djbamboogie 6:15 PM - 18 December, 2008
reading this blog is the hilarious thing ! thanks people! The one with the club banning freestyle cause the thugs were acting up - That is classic! freestyle brings back memeories of all the italaian and latin kids in the back of my high school gym dancing while all the black dudes in the front would b*tch and complain to the dj about changing the music and putting that Nice and Smooth on! lmao! I have all my Mic Mac records still - I'm going to record them and upload them to Serato - Maybe I'll throw in one on New Years Eve (I have a party at a club) just for ol' times sake! R.I.P. kalibhakta 10:48 PM - 19 December, 2008
Tapps have quite a few good tracks. I like some of the Italo/Hi-NRG stuff too. The Flirts are great. Way different then Freestyle though.

I do really like the overall sound of Freestyle in general.

What kind of gear do you think they were using? Some of the sounds used in the rhythms are killer, I wonder how they got them. Anyone know?
DJ Strike It Up 1:29 AM - 20 December, 2008
Tapps is ok, but my favorite Hi-NRG was Lime!
MaryG 5:03 AM - 15 August, 2009
Here's a tricky one but some one might know. What freestlye song sung by a girl has the line "why did you leave me lonely?
PapiCholo 7:18 AM - 15 August, 2009
My favorite Freestyle artist has always been Frankie Boy. "She's Leavin" is my all time favorite Freestyle song but I could never find his records or much information about him. Then just last week I found out Frankie Boy grew up to be Frankie J......I can't believe I couldn't put 2 and 2 together cuz I'm a big Frankie J fan too.
MexiKanMan 5:26 PM - 19 August, 2009

I've been slowly but surely transferring Freestyle Vinyl to mp3 (YES 320!!!)

It sucks that for the most part it never really took off, but I like that it's still in pretty good demand which makes the Vinyl kinda rare...difficult to find =o)
