Easter Egg: Vinyl Distortion mode

radikarl 5:15 PM - 18 July, 2011
i stumbled upon this while analysing midi assignment in the latest public beta...

hold alt + shift key, then click in the white circle of a virtual deck
result:

in the notification bar, it says:
"left deck vinyl distortion enabled"

what it does:
slightly different sound while scratching.
i think it adds harmonic distortion to it.

i could only tell the difference by scratching over a snare back and forth with my headphones on,
and while doing so have someone enable and disable the feature for me.
still worth a mention.

thougts ?

note: this works with the latest stable release as well, it is not new, only newly discovered

Nice... Always like to see easter eggs. Good stuff.
The Return of Dj Sparky 8:21 PM - 18 July, 2011
i was gonna call this a rotten egg as it didn't seem to do anything, let me try some scratching with it on,

good one for figuring it out
willythekidd 8:30 PM - 18 July, 2011
this has been in previous versions i believe but i don't know what it does...

to my ear, it actually sounds a minimal bit better. but i'm not sure if this is just a delusion because of the hidden-feature-coolnes-factor of it. :-D

it seems like a waste of an easter egg unless it does more. i wasn't able to notice a difference.

my guess is that it does something we haven't discovered...or it's broken.
snob dee-jays 8:56 PM - 18 July, 2011
still cool in my books.
ta2423 2:11 AM - 19 July, 2011
Yes... Find those eggs and may the force be with you.
Cyberia 3:18 AM - 19 July, 2011
I think the difference may be more noticeable with slow vinyl movements. Sounds as if the "digital" sound that was present before when the record was slowed down severely, isn't there anymore.

Let me know if you guys think so too.

Maybe this was the precursor to the hifi resampler
?
radikarl 10:43 AM - 19 July, 2011
interesting thought. when i come home, i will try if the difference is more audible when the hifi resampler is turned off
Anu 11:20 AM - 19 July, 2011
I miss the sound of true vinyl at my gigs and on big systems.....

If they get the sound right this would be a nice pro feature that i would use.
DouggyFresh 4:44 PM - 19 July, 2011
Maybe it's for when a deck is getting a lot of distortion in the control signal (from bass in the room, etc)

That sounds logical. I can't test that with my weak monitors in my room. We'll have to leave that test up to someone in a club.

I pm'd a serato staff about it lets see if they tell us
DJBIGWIZ 7:59 PM - 19 July, 2011
it definitely helps with VERY slow movements.

Loop a very short section of a song and spin the platter with your hand I mean REALLY slow and switch between having it on and off and you will hear the difference.
SiRocket 8:22 PM - 19 July, 2011
@wiz. exactly what i wanted to hear :) - hope all is good homie!

I wonder since if this is the case, if having this on might improve the keylock when sloooowwwwwingggg down a record by a big amount.....
willythekidd 6:02 AM - 20 July, 2011
i'm still not convinced...i'm thinking of doing a blind test. dont' forget this feature has been around for a while...pre 2.3.

What i've found:

Using the easter egg with the hi fi resampler off. results in a much better sounding SLOW scratch

using the easter egg with hi fi resampler on. doesn't sound too great.

just to add. I preferred the sound of the vinyl distortion mode, over the hi fi resampler. its a very small difference though.

i just experimented with it a bit and noticed the tracking bar would be solid gray with it "enabled' and show some of the red with it "disabled".
