Not quite sure if it fits the bill, but...

Zhane - Groove Thang
Yasmeen - Blue Jeans
Shaggy - Freaky Girl

I'd step to these.
DJ Wildewood 7:44 PM - 6 February, 2009
any kind of mid tempo rnb, thats bpm from about 85 depending on the song up to about 110, im a steppign dj myself
DJ GaFFle 8:24 PM - 6 February, 2009
James Brown - Blues and Pants (<--- one of the dopest breakbeats ever)
DeezNotes 9:50 PM - 6 February, 2009
Maybe its just me, but it seems like over here when you play stepping songs the people know (step in the name of love + happy people), they're fine. Once you play anything else, the stepping stops. Regular dancing could continue, but its like that commercial where the guy stops walking when someone takes his GPS. I like the song Red Carpet which fits in to that whole steez (in the beginning Kels says "tell me where the steppers at") and the people who are stepping just stop stepping because they don't know the song, but I still play it because it's a good song. It makes me want to ban all organized hokey pokey dancing.

WOW! this is all called RNB, where I'm from. stepping songs are like line dances. for the most part everything here is classified as "RNB" in my crates.
agentorange 9:54 PM - 6 February, 2009
i'm new to this whole "stepping" genre. i'll rock with it though. but is this really right???? feels kinda weird to subclassify rnb. kinda like "gangbanger rap". i don't know man...
DeezNotes 10:27 PM - 6 February, 2009
I don't classify stepping is a genre. It's a type of dance. Most of the songs listed here are also R&B in my opinion. They are just songs that have a particular type of rhythm people can "step" to.
R-Tistic 1:56 AM - 7 February, 2009
Agentorange....hmm, I mean, it's not really a "subgenre" in that way, but it is a classification and a type of dance, as DeezNotes says. The same way you have "slow jams" or even what I call "Slow grind" songs in which you play at the end of a hype or even "hood" party when you want to play songs with that sexual overtone, versus "slow dancing" type of songs...for my Slow grind, I might play anything from 112 Anywhere, to T-Shirt and panties (cliche) to Knockin the boots, Pony, etc. etc....just songs that people are known to dance freakier to, versus "Forever my lady" and "Here and now" which would be slow dancing songs you'd hear at a wedding.

So yeah...I guess you could make a crate or whatever for Stepping, Slow dancing, line dancing (which is more like Cupid shuffle and Electric Slide), slow grind, Rap remixes, etc. etc.
agentorange 2:03 AM - 7 February, 2009
i can dig it.

I was out in Vegas kicking it with a stepper's dj and I spin in Chicago. In Vegas they will look at you funny if you through Step in the Name of Love On. That is like commercial steppin. They are on it in Vegas. Real Steppers are on it in Vegas I mean.

I just came from doing a steppers set and yeah they step and walk. Also it's a line dance for too many songs now. They do look tight when the whole floor is doing it. Plus look for a lot of skater dj remixes. They sound tight as hell. They do steppers mixes on V103 and 106.3 in Chicago sometime and I am always like where can I get that music.

Fav music to spin is House up Next is Stepperz!

Music from Shapro, Tim Jonz and Keezo Kane

Those are just 'line dances'. Steppin is usually done as a couples dance. When the whole room is coupled up and steppin it looks like a line dance, but it's not the same as the Cha-Cha or the Mississippi slide.

I will tell you this, you need to hit up a real "Steppers" Dj. They step to stuff you would of never thought. My guy out in Vegas where they step for real, got a remix of "Teach Me How to Dougie(just the instrumental) and an old school song over it. Filled the floor when he put it on.

A Stepping song is usually a filler/B song artist put on their albums. Yeah they might step to the commercial ish but real steppers step to underground hits that is not mainstream.

A person that think they know what stepping is request "Step in the name of Love"
A True stepper will request Kenny Loggins Too Early For The Sun

Just like people who say they like house and request the percolator

I thought it was on a So So Def Bass compilation originally but Amazon lists the short version on a Magic Mike compilation.

www.amazon.com

Amazon had a special offer yesterday for a $2 MP3 credit - go here: www.amazon.com and enter HEARTMP3 - not sure if it is still working...

Awww shit - I see they have that Biker's Shuffle on Amazon - need to get a legal- er - "better bit rate" copy of that... I guess I can use that Amazon credit for that.

Steppin' Music doesn't always have to be R&B. There are Rap songs that people step to. Some even have steppers' remixes. Two songs I remember being popular off of the top of my head are:

Snoop Dogg - Drop It Like It's Hot
P. Diddy - Shake Ya Tailfeather

Here are a couple of newer(Rap)songs I have in my steppin' folder:

S.S.G. 'Z - Independent(Doing Yo Thang)

ontime1269 3:15 AM - 14 July, 2012
I found myself in a situation about 6 years ago when I DJ'ed at this spot. I was the resident DJ and we started having multiple steppin' nights. I had to give up nights because I didn't have enough music to cover those nights and really had no idea where to start to acquire the proper music. Other DJ's I knew weren't much help, well, probably didn't want to help.....if you get my drift. I made it a point to never let something like that happen again. I don't get any steppin' gigs but I've made sure that I have plenty of music just in case. So I'll contribute more to this thread so the same thing doesn't happen to someone else. Most of the tracks are older but there are a few that are pretty new. Here we go:

Carl Thomas ft LL Cool J - She Is
Carl Thomas - I Wish
Bigg Robb ft Sir Charles Jones - Grown & Sexy(Remix)
Bigg Robb - Suga Shack
Klass Band Brotherhood - Suga Shack
TK Soul - Party Like Back In The Day
Willie Clayton - Party Like We Used To Do
Guy - Tell Me What You Like
Jagged Edge - Baby
Jennifer Hudson - Don't Look Down
Jill Scott - Lonely Day
Lamont Starr - Float Away
Leah Labelle - Sexify
Lloyd - Cupid
R. Kelly - Share My Love
Robin Thicke - Love After War
Anthony Hamilton - Struggle No More
Bigg Gipp - Steppin' Out
Monica - Knock Knock
Erick Sermon ft Marvin Gaye - Music
Lionel Richie - I Call It Love
Erykah Badu - Back In The Day
Jimmy Cozier - She's All I got
Joe - If I Was Your Man
Fabolous ft Neyo - Make Me Better
Jill Scott - Whatever
Geral Levert - DJ Don't
Fantasia - When I See You
J. Marc - Pause
Ivory - Relax & Party

1st rule of playing Steppers Music is never tell anyone where to get Steppers music...

Actually a couple of guys I know protect their library with a passion. A few are using ITCH and Virtual DJ with auto-sync so no true mixing skills so their claim to fame is having "rare cutz" that few other people have.

The bar I spin sometimes has Steppers early from 5p-10p so I just need a hours worth or so to transition them to mainstream Urban - by Midnight - I am dropping usually Travis Porter and Jeezy....

So what actually makes "Steppin" music "Steppin" music?

A certain genre? BPM? Certain Artists?

What do all of these songs have in common?

Yea right. THere's plenty of music out there that would make them seem left-footed.

I don't think that was a real stepper you were talking to. I don't think real steppers will step to Rick Ross, These N_ggas Can't hold me back or Nikki M Stupid Ho.

These steppin' songs have a certain beat to them. It's a cut on Tyga's album that I've played where real steppers where and they got down to it.

Stepping songs are usually B songs or filler songs on artist albums. Listen to Missy Elliot(sp?) Puzzy don't fail me now. Steppers eat that ish up. That is a steppers' beat.

I had them going with that Rick Ross - Aston Martin Music for a minute back when that was new - LOL (but was trying to work Even Deeper by Rick Ross - never took off)

Wow, I was curious to see if this thread would come up in a Search for "Steppers Music" - look what I found....

Steppers USA - Steppers Music List
www.steppersusa.com

This list comes from the Facebook steppers music group www.facebook.com of songs to step to. This list is by no means exhaustive but it is a good place to start. The songs in this list have already been posted in the group so if you can browse through it or search. Most of the music on this list can be found on YouTube as the only music allowed in the group are from YouTube or Facebook Video.

Glad I don't spin ONLY steppers music for a living, that list is like buying a Hard drive - any Microwave can become a Steppers DJ now - LOL. ('cept you still gotta find the songs - no blog/downloads)

This is gonna keep me busy for a minute....
djatrain@hotmail.com 2:38 AM - 27 August, 2012
You might be able to get some songs from a few oh my old steppers mixes.

www.mixcloud.com

www.mixcloud.com

www.mixcloud.com

A lot of true steppers like those deep cuts/rare finds. Like a dj/producer will put out a bangin track and the only way you can get it is from another dj or hope to find it. Steppin' music is not all commercial tracks. Just like house music.

I'm no "steppers" dj by any means, but but this list looks like it has a LOT of filler in it. I recently deleted a lot of these songs from my crates, cause like most music that's centered around a certain type of function, they just sit and never get played. Most of the stuff posted in this thread should be enough. I know I'm not the only one with a lot of filler / B-side tracks in here... I'm over it.

All of these you posted in here is great guys thank you for the start. Havent played music in years but starting up again. One question though. Dont you think that there are two steppers hardcore steppers and wanna be steppers. You must have two types of steppin music. One for the hard core and the others for the rest what do you all think. By the way Im from the Chi where it all happens.

Absolutely - I spun a wedding reception a few weeks ago with some "steppers". The only thing they wanted to step to was Step in the Name of Love, Happy People, & Red Carpet. I transitioned to "non-commerecial" steppers music, and the "steppers" had a seat.

LOL, I always get that. People that think they are steppin', then you throw on a real steppin song and they have no clue. Most of the time those (Only RKelly known songs steppers) are not even stepping. They are boppin. Have some real steppers at a gig and they will ask you where is the powder to throw on the floor.
