When someone's giving you something for free no need to dis them. If I went into a record shop and wanted one out of seven things played to me that would be a fair average. So, one tune out of seven for free looks like a good thing to me.

My cup is half full......
AdamJay 11:54 PM - 28 July, 2007
a "Download all" option for releases would be handy (downloading the clean/dirty/instru/acap all at once)
DJ Prinvale` 1:13 AM - 29 July, 2007
thanks for keeping whitelabel alive! Looking forward to the final release.
J_Static 5:54 PM - 29 July, 2007
Props to the mods 4 keeping this thing alive, I can only imagine the fight ya'll are having with the record labels!

I know how it can be! I used to deal with them on and off!

Thanks for the feedback! Wiley - My Mistakes [Big Dada] went online yesterday, there's more to come today.

If there's anything you really like let us know in the Release Feedback forum -> beta.whitelabel.net

Yep :) That's planned, but a way off because we have a lot of record label stuff to do first.

Until then you could try using Firefox -> www.mozilla.com

With the Download them all extension -> www.downthemall.net
DJ C.A.P 11:32 PM - 29 July, 2007
checked it out...it's great I love it haha

just like what has been said befor...that is technicaly illegal. UNLESS you have gotten permission from the record labels to make the remix. Sense Serato is working with the labels to get this going for us.. how whould it look to the labels if the SSL team allowed us to put up ILLEGAL files from the labels that are working with serato to get this going

i wonder how into this the EDM indie labels would be... From what I understand, a lot of these labels make most of their money off vinyl sales to DJs and having their tracks available for all SSL DJs to download will likely cut into their sales.

I know promos are usually just given out on a sort of "VIP" basis...

Yep, that's right. Some are choosing to try out Whitelabel.net to reach new markets, some have almost given up on making money out of selling music altogether and simply want to get their music out there to enable them to do more gigs (where the real money is...)

Two Releases out today:

Hi-Tek - Where It Started At (NY) [Babygrande Records]
Hi-Tek - Can We Go Back [Babygrande Records]

Those are definitely some nice tracks dave. :P Although a bit late, it's good to see progress of any kind.

Damn babygrande be droppin sh*t constantly! It'd be Kewl as f*ck to see the record labels do a "back log" of all their artists tracks!

Meaning they would just hand over the old school tracks from their artists to SSL since they had already been released years prior!

Imagine having the entire Def Jam catalog!

Interesting. However, the world of Promo doesn't work that way. It could be more than months before a track "expires" or happens to be a hit. Do you know the meaning of "sleepers"? I don't think putting a time limit is in the best interest of the labels. Besides, once it's out. It's out. It has spread like herpes and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

I saw him last week at One Nation 'Clash of the Titans' at Brixton Academy. I know he's on your list of 'DJ's who use Serato Scratch', but actually seeing him plug in Serato Scratch and do a set was awesome!
Considering D&B can be quite an elitist vinyl genre, it was good seeing a top D&B dj use digital. Gives me hope... ;P

(Apologies for Triple Post!)

I see Serato is one of the sponsors for the 'Sun and Bass' event. It might be worth using the opportunity of close proximity with D&B dj's to see if they'll be keen in getting involved.
Also, any perks for owners of Serato Scratch when going to events sponsored by Serato? ;P
dave 7:50 PM - 3 September, 2007
Its all appreciated LazyGun :) Are you going to Sun and Bass?
LazyGun 10:04 PM - 3 September, 2007
Alas, not this year.
I spent a lot of money (read: overdraft) buying my turntables and Serato, which cut into my holiday funds.
However, I've already planted in my friends the seed of thought to camp on the beach and go next year.
Tell me if it's any good :)

Thanks sixxx.

Scratch LIVE 1.7.4 RC 2 deals with them well, the problem is our Whitelabel file encoder.

The record label uploaded mono files for that and our encoder didn't deal with it well.

We've fixed the encoder already but we have had to remove that release until we get stereo source files.

and if they ARE already Pre-Built.. why- when I add them to SSL- if i hit the build overview button it starts building them again?

Me.. being a pro DJ (in the sense that DJing is what I do for a living) LIKE the WhiteLabel service. I dont consider it DRM in the sense that I CAN still play them in other apps.... but the only app that i will use them live in is SSL. So speak for yourself with that comment.

Hey prizo - yes Whitelabel audio files have DRM. If you choose not to use this service, that's cool, but you might change your mind if Whitelabel.net was the only place to get a particular release you wanted.

We'll see what we can do :)

I must admit we were already talking to them when you wrote this, I just wanted to look cool ;)

there are two things you can do to help us to get more labels on board - 1) provide feedback for the releases that we're currently putting out (over here: beta.whitelabel.net ) and 2) if you have contact with labels, even if it's just via their info@ address or web forum, let them know that you want them to check out whitelabel.net ... if they know there is demand, they'll be a lot more receptive when we call.
Thanks for all your support so far, it's all coming along nicely!

Yep, we're talking to labels about non-DRM delivery too. Keep in mind that if we do non-DRM delivery most labels will be sending to their A-list DJs only. Most labels won't want to give out non-DRM music to thousands of DJs they don't know.

They don't know us?!?!?

Let me clarify my statement.

I didn't mean that a record label will not know anyone here, but it is unlikely that they will know every Scratch LIVE DJ personally.

So, what is the answer to your question? Do you know the promo people at the record labels you want promos from? If we were to deliver non-DRM mp3s, Whitelabel.net would probably work the same way as has done for years.. if you have a good relationship with the record label you'll be on their list, and you'll receive their promos.

Record labels already have the ability to send to a particular list of DJs, and as I've been saying, I think that feature would be used most of the time if they were to deliver non-DRM files.

it's a standard thing in reggae and has been going on for years. A lot of artists utilize the same instrumental or "riddim" and the DJs will cut between like 4 or 5 songs with the same riddim.

The riddim packs on whitelabel are one of coolest things I've seen from any promo service...

also known as the dub track in Reggae
dj_soo 3:49 AM - 20 October, 2007
i think it started baxk in the 60s... A lot of vocalists were too poor to afford the studio fees for recording their own instumentals so they just bought pre-existing tracks.

It has since been part of the culture of reggae/dancehall where different artists record different songs using the same instrumental

no it started wit the "Selector" (the dj). then the DeeJay's (the party pumper/rapper/vocalist) would do his/her thing over the selectors riddim when one of the "Sound Systems" came around (the big names Selectors had their own TRAVELING sound systems that when set up made an outdoor club for the area they set up in. the Selectors NAMED their sound systems and thats how people knew what party was going on by the sound system names
dj_soo 8:42 AM - 20 October, 2007
i know about the sound systems and the whole dubplate culture, but i believe before that artists would record over existing riddims simply to save money in studio time

Mark Ronson's label Allido Records presents Wale - Nike Boots:
beta.whitelabel.net

We've already got a connection with Company Flow when El-P signed up Definitive Jux. Now Mr Len from Company Flow has signed up his label, Smacks Records.

Smacks Records has something special for you – 30 records in 30 weeks! We're a bit behind schedule so this week we'll be giving you 7 records in 7 days to catch up. First up is Bully Mouth - Lemonade:
beta.whitelabel.net

Here's the press release for their 30 in 30 campaign.
For more information visit smacksrecords.blogspot.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, October 29, 2007

Smacks Records, the label founded by Mr. Len (DJ/Producer of Company Flow, Jean Grae, formerly of Rawkus Records and Matador Records), is kicking off an unheard of new campaign for its upcoming releases. Starting November 7th and every Wednesday after that for 30 Weeks, Smacks Records will release a new song from its roster of artists. That's right- 30 songs in 30 weeks.

Smacks Artists include: Kice of Course, Mental Case a.k.a. Sal Diesel, BullyMouth, Roosevelt Franklin, Eff Radio, and Mr. Len. Collaborations with El Da Sensei, I-n-I and Lord Sear are also in the works. AMALGAMDIGITAL.com, known for re-releasing the Kurious album and putting out the sophomore Juggaknots album "You're Your Confusion", will host the weekly releases on-line.

And if that is not enough, SMACKSRECORDS.BLOGSPOT.com has been established to give fans insight into the songs straight from the artist's mouth (or mind and fingers).

The most asked question is, "how will people hear it?" All you need to do is turn on your XM receiver and listen to Spitkicker Radio and the soon-to-come Dummy Smacks Hour on The Rhyme 65 every week. Tune in as Mr. Len cuts it up for the kiddies!

Yo dave, if you could re-label the Gangsta Rap - House Shoes to (explicit/dirty) that might save some confusion. It's labeled as (Radio) and it is most def NOT the radio version. I had downloaded it and was pre-listening to it before my gig when I heard all the swear words.

Glad I checked it before actually playing it.

balistikgelhed 11:15 PM - 15 May, 2008
DnB has been dead for a couple years now... :D doesn't make me sad... at all.

Actually I did go to a dnB party a couple weeks ago and the place was populated by smelly, sweaty hippies. Not really an attractive scene.

DJ Prinvale` 11:09 PM - 17 May, 2008
just wanted to say some of the releases lately have been pretty good. Original stuff most people wouldn't normally hear in a club.

I would however like to see more releases each week. Seems like WL gets about 2 to 3 releases a week which really isn't very much, especially if the releases aren't very good. A solid release pack (maybe 5 or more?) every wed or thurs (right before the weekend) with a handful of promos would be ideal imo. I'm probably just gettin greedy though :P
Brigid 10:15 PM - 19 May, 2008
Two new releases from Dim Mak records out today:

The Bloody Beetroots - Butter beta.whitelabel.net

You know how we are with our beta's :)
citi 4:36 PM - 4 June, 2008
it's like google...every app they release is in Beta, no matter how many years we have been using the "untested" product.
bassµnkie 10:52 AM - 8 June, 2008
...So i just realized something...aren't we like...liable for being sued if we download these tracks without paying for them, and then playing them (and then getting payed for playing them)? Or do you guys work out a deal with the record labels or something?
bassµnkie 11:53 AM - 8 June, 2008
p.s. I realize that's kind of a stupid question, but i'd rather ask it and feel like an ass than not ask it and...get into legal stuff.
also, I'd love to give reviews of this stuff, but i can't post for some reason, it says that i need to accept terms and conditions.
Brigid 12:13 PM - 8 June, 2008
Everything is 100% legal.

Posting in the Whitelabel.net forum is exactly like posting in the Scratchlive.net forum - you have to accept the terms first. Is there any problems you have with them at all? There's no secret "By accepting this you now owe Serato your first born child" clause, I promise.

btw, is there a section for suggestions regarding the layout of Serato's Whitelabel format?

- is there a way to navigate and preview/download by genre?

- also, is there a way to have an area to the side that contains links to other artists/songs that are similar or what other members have liked as well (kinda like what iTunes does)

Good question, no we don't have a Whitelabel feature suggestions area. But anywhere is fine, we're watching ;)

Quote:

We don't have a dedicated genre browse, but you can type "Funk" into the search to browse all funk releases

Not yet :)

And just in case anyone missed the Whitelabel News 004 email:

Culture & The Deejay's - Culture & The Deejay's At Joe Gibbs 1977-79 [VP Records] beta.whitelabel.net
Supastition - Unreleased Remixes [Reform School Music] beta.whitelabel.net
DJ Prinvale` 1:55 AM - 25 August, 2008
Sup Brigid.

I noticed more and more lately that some of the newer tracks don't have a "preview" to listen to them before download, and I'm noticing more not being tagged dirty / clean / radio.

This just how to get the tracks from the studios? No preview = no download.
Brigid 2:07 AM - 25 August, 2008
Hey Prinvale,

All of the tracks should have previews next to them - can you see the play icon next to the download icon? Do you click on it and nothing happens?
DJ Prinvale` 3:07 AM - 25 August, 2008
they are showing up now. A few days ago I could see the download icon but not the preview icon. Probably a browser issu (FF 3), but it's happened more then once.
dave 3:59 AM - 25 August, 2008
Thanks Prinvale. The previews should be there for all releases. Sometimes they are a bit slow to show up, and sometime they fail to play. We're looking at ways to fix them.
Brigid 4:45 AM - 27 August, 2008

What version of IE are you using KDJSO?

I tested the preview player in both IE6 and IE7 and works well.

First of all you MUST have javascript enabled. The preview player won't work without it.

IE7, by default, will prevent all pop-up windows from opening (even if they're opening a page from the same domain - very clever).

In this situation you'll see a yellow bar across the top of the web page saying that a pop-up window was blocked. You can click on this yellow bar and select from a couple of different options. You should select the option that says something like "Always allow pop-ups for this domain".

Selecting this option will reload the page. From here you should be able to open the preview player.

Let me know if this doesn't solve your problem.
ChrisD 11:37 PM - 8 October, 2008
One more thing: if you have any 3rd party pop-up blockers (eg. the Google toolbar) you may need to add an exception for the whitelabel.net domain.
MK 1 1:16 PM - 9 October, 2008
Awesome!! Love it!!! Well done to the team..
Kool DJ Sheak One 5:22 PM - 9 October, 2008
Ayo ChrisD
Just re-installed IE7, allowed popups from whitelable, and still just see the box pop up and then dissapear, oh well. It works on my AOL.
So I will use that instead.
Thanks for trying.
Btw, the site is looking better with the cover art.:)
ChrisD 9:27 PM - 9 October, 2008
KDJSO,

Do you have any 3rd party applications or extensions that could be blocking the pop-up?

Some browser tool bars include pop-up blockers. The Google toolbar for example has a pop-up blocker.

Some anti-virus software also installs some "browser security" tools which, amongst other things, blocks pop-ups.
DJ Bouj 11:18 PM - 9 October, 2008
Just download Firefox Mozilla, you;ll never go back, IE ia garbage and is prone to too many viruses.

I need to kick myself, I haven't been to whitelabel in a minute and there was a bunch of songs I needed to download, so I downloaded a bunch of Whitelabel joints in between getting joints from my pool. Majors should be paying Serato to promote their music. Serato is the industry standard and this is a good way to get artists out to the public. There were some wack artists, but a whole hell of a lot of Good artists I never heard of, or haven't heard from in a while. I just wish they gave whitelabel more clean edits. The spot I dJ at won't let me play dirty versions and you can't play dirty versions on the radio or public events anyway
Brigid 8:49 PM - 5 November, 2008
Hey - thanks for the feedback on the clean edits - I'll be sure to let labels know when they're putting stuff up. How often does everyone get to play dirty edits? You can't play dirty versions in public?
skinnyguy 7:44 PM - 6 November, 2008
can't play dirty versions at nightclubs in my area. Liquor Commissioners can fine you and possibly confiscate something. happened to a fellow dj. they took away his record. yes, apparently it's in their jurisdiction to do so. kinda wondering what they would do with a ssl user...confiscate the hd/lappy? or demand that we delete the file?
DJ Bouj 11:50 PM - 6 November, 2008
Woooow, thats one of the craziest things i've ever heard, how can anyone come in and confiscate a record collection? Can anyone say.............Orwell????

Yo maybe a moderator can answer this. Why is it when I dl a track from whitelabel the bitrate is like 32,28.etc..somthing useless?
Dj Koppa Top 6:02 AM - 20 December, 2008
You don't need a moderator for that you need to read a little more. The files are at their best in scratchlive when played on any other played they play at those rediculous bit rates. The files are 320kbs when played in serato with the SL plugged in.

Why is that? And how is it? So a 32kbps song from whitelabel plays like 320kbs. I don't get it . But if it works it works . Haha thanks man would have never known . Cuz when I play it on my laptop from itunes it sounds bad .
MK 1 6:01 PM - 20 December, 2008
It's to stop any old Joe playing the promos.. How they do it is a mystery. Serato and Rane magic i guess. They have it in abundance :)
dj buterd hams 6:11 PM - 20 December, 2008
dope man . sucks too i was dling for a while saw they were wack kbs and dumped them haha. got to go back

Pretty cool that Atlantic is servicing Whitelabel, now some recent and classic Club Bangers in there, it's also making me look back at a few of those that I already had but overlooked. Looking forward to more cuts from them in 2009.

Maybe some of the other Major labels will follow and hopefully strengthen up the whole concept.

And welcome Ultra Records to the Whitelabel family!

Ultra Records are sending their promo releases to their own DJ lists. Some Whitelabel users who updated their DJ Details to say they liked Dance music have also been added to the Ultra Records lists.

You can update your DJ Details on Whitelabel.net: www.whitelabel.net
Or on your new user page on Serato.com: www.serato.com
We'll have your DJ Details on ScratchLive.net soon too!

Once you've updated your DJ Details you can ask to be on the Ultra Records DJ lists by emailing whitelabel@serato.com.
DJ Prinvale` 6:45 AM - 19 January, 2009
keep up the awesome work on whitelabel. It's really come a long way since I first signed up for it!

Lots of tracks have made it into my gigs pretty regularly.

A. Pinks - Hit The Lights (I'm On!!) [Jump Street Records] whitelabel.net
LazyGun 6:18 PM - 23 January, 2009
Hopefully DJ Plastician gets on board with his Terrorhythm record label!

I play a lot of Dubstep; on my profile, for genres I play I've clicked 'Dance' and 'Alternative'. Will that cover any future Dubstep releases?
dave 10:12 PM - 27 January, 2009
Hey LazyGun, if a Dubstep label used Whitelabel and wanted to send to our genre based lists, then the ones you mentioned would probably be the closest match. But my feeling is they'd probably send them to either all DJs, or to their own list.
dave 11:09 PM - 27 January, 2009
Welcome to Robbins, this is going to a dance list made up of North American DJs who updated their profiles (do it now! www.whitelabel.net):
Filly - Sweat [The Drip Drop Song] [Robbins Entertainment] whitelabel.net

We have some more dance music from Ultra too. A recent release sent to their lists:
Ferry Corsten - Radio Crash [Ultra Records] whitelabel.net

And a big tune from a couple of years back with a ton of remixes:
Armand Van Helden - NYC Beat [Ultra Records] whitelabel.net

And finally, two more from Warner:

That release was sent to the Ultra DJ list.

If you want to be added please email whitelabel@serato.com and we'll see what we can do, but for a start you'll need to update your profile www.whitelabel.net and tell us what genres you're into, and what clubs and radio stations you play on.

Nice.. Been supporting WL.net for ages, ticked all the boxes in my profile, play clubs and radio.. Seems i'm not good enough for "ultras" ultra OLD promos lol.. As for "the drip drop song" I STOPPED playing the "cut full" mix last summer.. Promo? Er no..

Disappointed to find i am not considered eligible for promos i already had.. Looks like i'm gonna miss the boat on all the good stuff cos i aint even on the shit stuff..

Think i'll stick to the services that look after me if this going to become the norm..

Sorry MK 1 - I should have mentioned Ultra only have rights to send their releases to North America. We are working with Ultra to get worldwide distribution, at which point you'll be on the list.

The drip drop song is the first release from Robbins so I guess they wanted to start with something older. Can you please leave some feedback there for the label to tell them that you need promos? That would be much appreciated!

Yes, that would be great.

Note that most (probably over 90%) of the releases on Whitelabel are delivered worldwide to everyone.

Also note that it's not Serato's / Whitelabel's choice who gets access to each release, and in some cases it's not really the record label's choice either. Some want to send worldwide but simply can't because they don't have worldwide clearance. Serato isn't going to stop them from using Whitelabel simply because some releases have restricted access.

Anyway, I have a feeling of deja vu... from a few months back...

Sorry nik39 - we are working with Universal to get worldwide distribution. It took a lot of time and hard work to get them to use the system at all so I think it will take us a while to sort this out.

Maybe you have dust on your needle?!?
nik39 8:36 PM - 31 March, 2009
No Deja Vu... I just think (in this case) people should voice their opinions about what they don't like. I am not blaming you [Serato], but hopefully some recordlabel will read this and overthink their strategy. The more people complain the higher the chances that at some point there will be a change. I am not giving up the hope :)

it's so interesting. Yeah I'm not hitting the top clubs every week but every event I do is 300+ people, mostly kids 25 and under. You would think they would see that and say, "That's Eminems Market, give the music to this guy too."

Not that I'm complaining - I think labels need to open up their eyes a little bit more and realize that there are some great and successful DJs that don't do radio or clubs for a living.

Not to mention, have you been to a club lately? Eminem is not what clubs DJs are playing, unless it's a house remix. My market actually makes more sense.
djdannyd 5:05 PM - 7 April, 2009
It is funny you mentioned that cause I neve received the promo "You're a Jerk" and a bunch of kids were requesting it last weekend at a gig. Pretty much same issue here, now I don't know if it has not been released on whitelable.net but I'm also in other Dj pools and still have not seen it...

This issue has totally nothing to do with whitelabel, its a decision made by superiors at the record labels (even worse, corporate). I worked in the field briefly with streetwise.net, and the rules and regulations are rediculuous. I remember one time we had to throw away two skids of about 10,000 sampler cd's because the record label first cleared a single, and then changed their minds after all the materials were printed, and cd's were replicated because of clearance issues.

releases 'expire'? is there a default time period?

with so much coming out, its hard to grab it all... but with limited time of availability, its hard to be selective. it would be a huge help to know when you take down releases... maybe a 2-week notice or something? i'd opt-in to that.

Sorry, it won't be possible to give you 2 weeks notice because labels can expire a release at any time.

Does anyone here remember going to the record store, and seeing the cut you were looking for. And KNOWING that record would NOT be there the next day. So you had to buy that jawn right then and there? Don't sleep.
Same concept here;
If you check out a track and not download it, then wait for someone else to tell you that the shit is bangin', then you go back to WL to see that it has expired, and you realize that you were sleeping, then you would learn never to be a slipping sleeper ever again.

SMH @ 2 weeks notice. GTFOH with that.

It's not WL's fault that record labels have the worst business model in history and have no money.

Any of you guys take any business classes? When labels get as big as they are, it takes a very long time for stuff to get approved. To a mom and pops store, yeah no problem, get the item, price it, sell it. Corporate = more approvals, more steps.

If you going to be mad at the labels, be mad at them for price gouging for so many years..
