Problem with dragging files onto channels

On occasion I've experienced freezing of the visual and audio while dragging one file onto the virtual platter as another is playing. I'm using an external drive, does this have something to do with it?

It might but I would ask if you have built all of your overviews.
If not than you could be experiencing lag due to your computer needing to work extra hard to load the non built track.
