What a horrible effin night.

<babbling>

I show up and the manager "reminds" me that it's an 80s weekend so I need to be playing an 80s song every 3rd or 4th song. I say "reminds" because it was the first I had heard of it. Now, naturally, all of my 80s music is at home on my external because I never need it so the night started GREAT. Thank God for friends who will buy you CDs at a moments notice. Not that I ended up playing anything off of them because......

The Pistons game just kept going and going and going so by the time they lost at 11:45ish everyone who had been at the bar had lost their buzz from being glued to their seats watching the last 2 OTs without drinking.

So at midnight I had a small, sober depressed crowd. What a way to start a night. Probably didn't help that I had other more important things on my mind. Oh well, it's over. Next Thursday is a new day.

dj hes 4:22 PM - 1 June, 2007
Man I wore my Lebron James Jersey last night... pp kept comin up to me..and i didnt even catch the game lol. Im glad i didnt have to play 80's crap, that would have ruined my night too.
dj cubicle 4:28 PM - 1 June, 2007
I would have gotten shot if I had played 80s music last night. Two distinct groups, the 2 step, walk it out, pop lock drop crowd and the reggaeton crowd. In Michigan. On 80s night.

The more I look back on it, the more it wasn't my fault I had a bad night.
dj cubicle 4:38 PM - 1 June, 2007
...although I did have what I now think was an escort tipping me to play songs so she could give a guy lap dances. That was kinda cool, especially since it was at 9:45, nobody was in the bar, and I would have played the Pink Panther theme song if someone had asked. LOL

This is why I take all my music to EVERY gig. Club or not. Radio or not. Private party or not. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!

-1. i totally disagree, if i took backups to every gig, i would always forget something. it takes 3x as much organization and working on synchronizing everything when you're taking everything.. between laptops, desktops, external hard drives, im lucky if everything is up to date once a month
sixxx 6:29 PM - 1 June, 2007
I NEVER SAID backups. I mean. One hard drive. All my music in it. lol
sixxx 6:31 PM - 1 June, 2007
There's no reason to have a mess. I have 1 external HD with all my music. When I back it up to my desktop, it's just plug, drag one folder with all the music and let it copy. Simple. :)

That's what I mean. Internal. External. Doesn't matter. 1 Drive fits all... music. lol
DJ Michael Basic 6:48 PM - 1 June, 2007
Hard drive space is so cheap now. The 750gb external drives are now down under 300 bucks. It just doesn't make sense for ANYBODY not to have all their shit in one place, with multiple backups. If 1 gig will pay for organization, and 2 for security, you'd better get on it.

I don't shave my hard drive. It's old enough to shave itself.
cappinkirk 7:12 PM - 1 June, 2007
i use a hard drive razor
DJ Michael Basic 7:13 PM - 1 June, 2007
I doubt you can rock just about any party. Can you rock a party where the clientel wants all Bahngra and Indian House? Can you rock a quinceniera where the family wants ALL spanish music? Cumbias, Ranchero, Reggaeton, Salsa, etc? Can you do a Bar Mitzvah and play more hora songs than just Hava Nagila? Can you field oddball requests from the 80th birthday party's guest of honor?

I could go on forever.

My club set consists of about 2500 songs. My House set consists of about 1,000 songs.

I have 40,000 dj tracks total. I have 75000 Karaoke tracks total. I don't have to turn down a party EVER for lack of ability to play to their tastes. I live right in the heart of Los Angeles, where tasts run the full Gambit.
sixxx 7:27 PM - 1 June, 2007
DJ Michael Basic just broke it down for you. If you do one club and that's ALL you do. You will be OK with 30 gigs of music. Shit. Even less than that!
dj cubicle 7:34 PM - 1 June, 2007
I was just pissed off because this was only my 2nd week at this spot and they told me they were running a theme weekend as I was doing my sound check 10 mins before I started playing.

There's a lot of "other" stuff going on there that you guys can probably figure out considering I was getting requests for 2 Step and Walk It Out.

Whatever, it's the weekend. I need a beer.
DJ Evil One 8:59 PM - 1 June, 2007
i don't just do one club or one region for that matter...

but he is right, i don't do parties for clients that want bahngra and indian house or anything that specific...

that's just not my shit.

i also don't do weddings and shit like that unless there's a lot of dough involved and they want to hear something different than your typical wedding DJ.
DJ Michael Basic 9:12 PM - 1 June, 2007
Yea, see weddings = a lot of dough, and a lot of bullshit. I've made the choice to make my profession "DJ" however, and since I've got no alternate source of income, I take all the gigs I can get.

Obviously, I much prefer my club gigs, but if I need to do 1 or more $1000+ wedding a month to subsidize my income, so be it.

As the guys who have met me will tell you, I have this gadget habit I have to pay for.
sixxx 9:16 PM - 1 June, 2007
and then all the money that goes on hookers.. lol
DJ Michael Basic 9:20 PM - 1 June, 2007
No hookers yet, I've only been single 3 weeks!
The E Head 9:07 AM - 2 June, 2007
^^^gotta love the hookers!

i already have 3 levels of backup
1: complete, 250 gig hard drive backed up 2x
2: 120 gig mini external - sub folder in 250
3: 70 gig in laptop - backed up in 2 laptops and in 250 gig

the externals need usb cables, and their own power cables. the laptops need their own power cables, etc. even with my cable bag, it gets hectic. adapters, long rcas, short rcas, 1/4 inch cables, xlrs, patch cables... im already forget stuff, the last thing i need is another item with 4 components that i can forget.

i should think of putting everything in one external, but having a small external with no need for power is too convenient. ive never had the opportunity to take only the external out and jam on someone elses laptop, but it will happen eventually.

i used to setup everything in the living room before a gig and make sure it worked before i took it out. now, i just take everything and hope i didnt forget anything. then, when i get back i have to unpack and set everything up for practice. its too much work

if the dam techs didnt weigh so much, i would love to just keep them in the coffin and lessen my setup time, but it would kill my back. at least this way i can leave everything in the dam box and just worry about power and outputs.

if i dont know what to expect from a gig ie: wedding, older crowd, i usually take everything, but if its a crowd im familiar with, im just jamming what i got.
poloi3eai2 2:10 PM - 2 June, 2007
Just bring all your music next time. You never know what kind of wacky request the crowd asks for. Be gratefull you dont have to carry crates. Carrying an external is nothing compared to carrying 3 extra crates.
