Since We All Like Making Mixes

Dj K.Smith 6:53 PM - 19 May, 2007
I have an idea. Let's all take the same 10-15 songs and make a mix with them, then post back in here to see just how creative we really can be... Seeing so many "I made a mix last night" threads, why not do it a bit more creatively...

There has to be some rules though...

1. No using programs to "edit" the mix.
2. Has to be "LIVE"...

Music can be whatever you like although I'm sure most of us will roll with "Hip-Hop & R&B"... (Sorry KaGeN, no house, lol)

I'll pick the first track...

1) 2 Pac - All About U

Now if you're down, post my number 1 and your number ___ until we hit 10-15 songs. That way we'll have the playlist for all participants to see...

Nicky Blunt 12:39 PM - 21 May, 2007
yo im missing a couple of these tracks we should make a pool of like 20 tracks & see who comes up with what rather than a pre made set list as its gonna be pretty boring listening to the same 15 songs mixed by like 30 odd different dj's!
Monk-A 1:18 PM - 21 May, 2007
that is what he's done mate: you have to use:

2Pac - How Do U Want It
M.O.P - Ante Up
Dr. Dre - Next Episode
Luda - Southern Hospitality
Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty
Saigon - Dont Do That

but you select a minimum of four, or all of the other songs, not included in those six.

Okay, def some hot shit going down, especially for live, uncut shit. Since nobody put a rating up yet, I'll go first...

K. Smith - 9 (Got higher marks because he got his mix up first and utilized those effects with the 57, and he's a wedding DJ. haha)

Sixxx - 8 (Nice with the scratching and double downs.)

Psyko - 8.5 (Love the intro, felt this flow the most so far. Sounded more planned out with the relative mode features.)
sixxx 4:53 AM - 24 May, 2007
Thanks matt212 :)

That was my drop, I just dropped it before anything else. And if we want to get technical, the mix was supposed to contain at least ten tracks.:)But I don't think that's what this is really about. Just havin some fun with it. I'm glad to finally see some friendly competition around here. I'd like to see this continue, accross other genres too. Maybe a pool with no limitation as to speed or genre? That would inspire some real creativity I think.

Yea.... what version you want to add? I have at least 4 different versions... Julls complains about that every time we play out.

And I only asked because I'm not using Serato.... I use uh, something else. I'd like to throw something into the mix but I want to ask. Some people are picky like that....

Thanks man. I love innovation. I really do but I want Serato to feel the closest to using regular vinyl so I stick to absolute. Plus, I don't want to get too used to it because I do spin regular records too and well, it would be a shame to start believing that I could set cues and auto loop on regular vinyl.

I'm still gonna use it just to get more familiar with it. I think the only times I use REL right now is when I'm at the club and I need to ext a weird ass intro by looping it or when I need to scratch and don't want to fuck up just one part of the CV.

Ya man, although I can't say I really have used ABS since I got used to relative, I do keep myself incheck with real vinyl a lot. Everytime I get new doubles, I cut em up... Not to mention I will always bring real vinyl to the gig
Steve_Dub 10:24 PM - 24 May, 2007

well, Dub still has mad skips...
see---> www.iskip.com
sixxx 11:22 PM - 24 May, 2007

Anyway, the thing is that I don't think I want to give up needle dropping. Even with the 57, I just don't feel like pushing buttons to get to places. Yeah. It's faster, but I really like the regular vinyl feel...yeah, even with skips. :P

Steve_Dub 11:26 PM - 24 May, 2007
yeah sixxx, the MAIN and probly only thing I miss about ABS & regular vinyl is having the stickers in the right place so I can juggle. I hardly ever juggle anymore and when I do it sounds like crap (listen to that last mix) because I dont have the stickers as markers anymore and have to guestimate. But I dont do any juggles at the club anyway so I stuck with REL. Whenever I do a hip-hop show or anywhere im playing the real shit and feel like juggling I switch back to ABS.

lol

sheesh..... I don't use Limewire.... or bearshare... or any of the other P2P services.... last one I used was Napster way back in the day. But between the crappy quality and other issues with the tracks I deleted those LONG ago.... When I started my DJ business I went 100% legit on tracks. Everything I have either came from a pay MP3 site/record pool that's legal or I ripped from CD.

As for my source... I often use the Russian site when I need a track or two quickly... and they don't have it.

I haven't hit up digiwaxx yet though... It's been a couple weeks since I picked up tracks from there - I've just been too busy to really preview the tracks....

I'll hit up Digiwaxx later today though... and hopefully get the mix out tonight or first thing tomorrow.

Ok...

Here we goo..
01 track 01 2.m4a - 14.34MB

I am beyond hungover so cut me some slack...things you will notice...

1. My scratching sucks
2. I pushed the record forward very noticeably on several occassions
3. Some lyrics over lap on the choruses

I get really anxious when I record so i tend to mess up alot more then when I am just fuckin around...I figured if I stopped when I fucked up I wouldnt be posting anything right now, so i just let it ride baby and prepared myself to the critisism...lol

enjoy!

Me too...
Dj K.Smith 5:28 PM - 25 May, 2007
Props Tig for upping a mix... I would say that your blends were pretty cool but your scratching does need a tune up... Were you afraid of messing up for some people you've never met? Forget about that if you were... Just let go and learn from your mistakes, that's what I do... A couple of times we could hear where you pitched up the record while the other track was still playing... You'd be better suited to make it was on beat in the headphones then played it out...

All in all, it was cool... but what format did you record in bro? LOL
tig ol' bitties 8:32 PM - 25 May, 2007
I know...it was done in haste...i had the pitch set fine in the headphones..I just didnt drop it exactly on point, which forced me to push it....

I dont know I did it to wav then converted it in itunes...my scratching is terrible I know hahaha....

Ill put more effort into the next one.

Listened to your mix. I can see how you played some songs too early and then realized that and mixed them where they should've been mixed. :) Good job at realizing that. It's a lot scarier sometimes knowing you're recording yourself huh!? lol :) Good effort. A little more practice though. Thanks for letting us listen to it!!!

Sorry guys, late in the game. The speakers at home are wack and just mixing with headphones suck, plus the TTs are placed very low in my house... so the only chance to record it was in the club. Live, no edits bla bla a lot of fuckups (esp. the part where I had the great idea to trigger cues with the flava in ya ear from both decks at different speeds - lol - great idea, yeah right ;) ) - but thats how it goes after a long night. I didn't even listen to it completely afterwards. Haha.

Okay, enough lame excuses, lol, here we go (sorry can't remember the tracklist, tired as f*ck, its 5 on the morning over here):

Not bad for a tired mix... I liked this one better than the Soulish mix... The Craig Mack thing was a nice idea, just came off a little rough... You had a few nice wikki-wikki's so I gotta give you credit for that... A couple of slaps that went "ehhh", but good none the less...

Thanks mang.

Im getting better but no where near where i want to be before i start searching for gigs.
DJ Michael Basic 9:38 PM - 26 May, 2007
Ok, uploading now. You guys know I don't really scratch that well, so I only scratched once or twice. Used a lot of cue points and loops. A lot of these songs didn't have intros but they did have outros so I used the old "Loop the outro then hit the cuepoint to drop the verse" trick. I'm overall happy with it...On the MOP I used an instrumental and when I dropped the regular I was off a bit, so there's 4 beats of mini-trainwreck, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it. Also, I wasn't really familiar with that "don't do that" track, and I think I mixed out during a verse instead of the chorus.

Anyway, it's uploading now, will link it in a sec.
DJ Michael Basic 10:00 PM - 26 May, 2007
Listened to all the mixes now too...here's some reviews...I hate reviewing mixes like this because I'm not great myself so I always feel like I should get better before I speak on other people's stuff.

CMOS, good work for someone without a ton of experience. A couple volume issues on some of these tracks...are you building overviews with autogain on? Especially when I'm doing a mix with songs I might be unfamiliar with, I always throw em into a playlist and just autogain the whole playlist. Otherwise, keep up the good work, practice makes perfect.

Autograph, your mix is cool as well. I same thing here, are you autogaining your tracks? Sounds like you have an itchy scratching finger...also the vocals on vocals when dropping the onyx heart my brain.

Nik39, I think your link is dead. Otherwise I just can't access it.

Tig, co-sign with everybody else.

Psychological, very nice. Like the cuts, pretty spot on mixing there.

Sixxx, another good one. One of these days I'm gonna learn to scratch like that.

Ksmith, good work with those funny cd things. Thanks for doing this...I like stuff like this...makes me branch out a little bit.

Still waiting on this upload...shit is taking forever.

I'll try to throw down a mix this afternoon... got to get this place cleaned up first though... I now have most of the tracks... for some reason a lot of the older tracks I was just missing and the artists weren't right on some of the track names...

But I made due... I started recording last night but I had to stop about 15 minutes in because my fiance pulled me away from the decks.... I also record to minidisc and then have to copy it back to the computer so I can upload it....

But I should have something up today though...

DJ Michael Basic 10:54 PM - 26 May, 2007
Yes, you're chopped liver.

I dig some of the stuff with the cue points, but you're going out on a limb by doing that and sometimes it doesn't come out as well as it could. Otherwise, some nice cuts, and cool bits and bobs to keep it interesting. This is probably my favorite of the bunch because it's the most creative.

The artists weren't right on the tracks listed HERE... They're right on my stuff....

sheesh....

Want an example? Here's the original list...

1) Pac - How Do U Want It
2) Mac Dre - Davin Rims (Some Bay for you DLO)
3) M.O.P. - Ante Up
4) Dre - Next Episode
5) NWA - Natural Born Killaz
6) Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty
7) B.I.G. - Want That Old Thing Back
8) Tracey Lee - The Anthem
9) Onyx - Throw ya Guns
10)Juvenile - Back That Ass Up
11) Southern Hospitality - Ludacris
12) Jaydee - Fuck the Police
13) Craig Mack - Flava in Ya Ear
14) Saigon - Dont Do That
15) Termanology - Watch How It Go Down

Here's the corrected list...

1) 2Pac - How Do U Want It
2) Mac Dre - Davin Rims - I never could find this track...
3) M.O.P. - Ante Up
4) Dr. Dre feat. Snoop - The Next Episode
5) Dr. Dre & Ice Cube - Natural Born Killaz
6) Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty
7) Notorious B.I.G. - Want That Old Thing Back
8) Tracey Lee - The Anthem - Couldn't find this track either...
9) Onyx - Throw ya Guns
10)Juvenile - Back That Ass Up
11) Ludacris - Southern Hospitality
12) N.W.A. - Fuck the Police
13) Craig Mack - Flava in Ya Ear
14) Saigon - Don't Do That
15) Termanology - Watch How It Go Down - Couldn't find this track either

So... some of the tracks were credited to the group while others were credited to the members individually. And it's wasn't unusual for that to happen. Sorry.... but Limewire don't even enter into it... Unlike sixxx I prefer to get my tracks legitimately... :-p

That aside... I have the tracks - I put down a mix tonight but I was getting to the end when I realized that the minidisc I was using to record with wasn't empty when I started so I only got about 15 minutes down.... Which sucks... I'll do it again here shortly so I can post it up... Guess I really need to wire into that other computer I have so I can just record to it and save a LOT of time...

Haha, yeah, didn't you look at my library once at Zen Sushi?

Every single song in my club set and house set is cue pointed, color tagged, commented, etc. I did it all by hand, which really helped to familiarize me with my library. Further, I have a system now, so when I add new songs, it's a quick process.

Makes doing live mashes a little easier. Still got a lot of skill honing to do.

CMOS: Very good for somebody who has not been at this for a long time.I think everybody pretty much hit the nail on the head. Keep practicing man

Nik39: I liked the concept behind the cue points on Flava in Ya Ear. Didn't come out quite right but after djing for hours to then make a mix? You have more stamina than me :P

Sheak: Liked yours. You got creative with it. Somethings worked and some didn't (listened to it yesterday and i'm a little hung over right now so can't remember exactly). Overall a good mix, especially for "free earing it"

Yea Michael. I'm a little scratch happy sometimes. Next one I will be a little more creative now that I've heard what others have been doing.

Going to sweat out this liquor in the gym and i'll come back and listen to yours.

Hey Mr. Smith, maybe we should just start a new thread for the uptempo scandal?
It looks like peeps are going to be doin this one for a minute.
MusicMeister 7:06 PM - 27 May, 2007
Ok.... I just did a mix.. I didn't even listen to it afterwards - I hooked up audacity to my mixer and recorded to the same computer I'm running my DJ software on. If I listened to it I'd probably get pissed at myself and not post....

So it's live... no planning... I don't know the songs too well... I didn't listen to much more than Ice-T back in the day...

And for the next volume I'd like to see a different genre... maybe 'funk'? Wild Cherry, Commodores, etc. It would be in the 95-110 range or so and would be something completely different for most people... besides, I actually know that tracks!

The track is encoding now... I'll upload as soon as it's done and post the link...
Kool DJ Sheak One 7:10 PM - 27 May, 2007
^^ word, maybe a limit to a certain genre. 2 funk, 2 rap, 2 doowop songs.

Ok... my DJ name at gigs is DJ Mr. Ed.... Because my first name is, uh, well, Ed.... Just want to explain the use of my intro....

And it's uploading to zshare right now.... I'll post a link when it's done...

Ok... here it is... I haven't even listened to it yet...

www.zshare.net

I'm not the most technically gifted DJ but what the hell.... It's raw, unedited (other than cutting the silence at the beginning and end of the track), and completely on the fly...

It's a little long because I'm not used to quick mixing in a mixtape style...

Go ahead and blast me sixxx.... I haven't heard any of the other mixes yet so I guess I should listen to them... have to get a computer up and running so I'll try to listen to them tonight once I'm done with that....

DJ Michael Basic 7:33 PM - 27 May, 2007
Wow. That's what torq can do eh? Glad I'm sticking with Serato.

I don't mean to come off like a dick but that was terrible. I heard you beatmatch once...otherwise everything was either a drop at the wrong time, vocals over vocals, or this weird effect that makes it sound like your speakers were under water.

That works for Jimi Hendriex, but not for a hiphop DJ.
Dj K.Smith 7:34 PM - 27 May, 2007

MM, what equipment did you use? Turntables?
Dj K.Smith 7:47 PM - 27 May, 2007
Your transitions were your biggest obstacle my man... Even music I'm not overly familiar with, I still try to count bars and make sure my blends are on point... That seemed to be the one glaring problem MM....
nik39 7:48 PM - 27 May, 2007
Hm, I disagree, counting bars can be a problem if you don't know the song. You might be totally lost - "is this the hook now?"
DJ Michael Basic 7:48 PM - 27 May, 2007
Ok, I was a little harsh there...Please don't take that personally MM...never had any problems with you dude...you seem like a cool guy, and I respect your hustle. Just thought this mix was hot garbage...sorry man.
MusicMeister 7:49 PM - 27 May, 2007
I was in a hurry to get something down... I played with the effects a little... it's not professional quality, and it's with tracks I've heard maybe twice in my entire life. If I planned the set out I could do a lot more... I did drop a loop of the beginning of one track, drop the bass from the outgoing track and bring it in over the upcoming track which was looped.... don't know if it came off ok though...

As was requested, I didn't plan the set, I don't do mix tapes so the 'quick mix' style is new to me... And BTW, I'm not a hip hop DJ.... If I was I'd scratch, actually know the songs, etc. I do a little club work but 90%+ of what I do is mobile - primarily weddings. Weddings which I PLAN about 25-50% of the music for the event.... and the timing...

But... I welcome the critique... it's a limitation of ME not the tools I'm using... and without critique I don't learn...

That's why we have headphones to cue the next track, find the beat (rhythm) and drop it where appropriate... Not saying its the only solution but in the simple sense, a workable one...
nik39 7:52 PM - 27 May, 2007
Transition from Ms. Fat Booty to Southern Hospitality was okay, I'd.

Southern Hospitality is one of the most fucking greatest freaking dopeeee beats from Neptunes. And Ludacris is god when it comes to flowing - awesome.

Sorry, had to get this of my chest. I love this track.

That's right... Way to remain humble and receiving of others input... I know my mix wasn't the "ish" either... That's how we all learn...
DJ Michael Basic 7:53 PM - 27 May, 2007
Yea man, I can understand that...I do weddings, karaoke, sweet 16s, the whole nine yards...I know it's a totally different style of mixing. I'd bet you don't practice club style of mixing at all, or very rarely. Once you know the basics, all you can do is practice to get better...doing shit like this is good practice, because it gets you away from the norm.

Well, I assumed you use the headphones :) I meant, I also have sometimes difficulties mixing tracks which I havent heard before (or only few times) and I don't know where the hook starts. But... nevertheless you should get a feeling at least when 1 starts and 16 ends. All I am saying is, it'S sometimes tricky to find the beginning/end of a hook.

BTW, still props to MM to post a mix even if he is not a turntablist/hiphop-dj and it'S totally not his music.
MusicMeister 7:55 PM - 27 May, 2007
I can count bars - I play a couple different instruments, but I was fighting my eyes with my ears. I had a couple tracks analyze the bpm's wrong and my eyes see bars matching up by my ears were going 'WTF'?!? Knowing where to bring the track in was easy - it's reading when to mix out that was the problem. I usually realize I should have mixed out AFTER I should have. If I knew the tracks it would have been much easier...

But again, I WELCOME critique.... just provide some information on the WHY it sounds like crap so I can improve...

OMG.... that effect in the first track SUCKS... what the hell was I thinking?

That first transition was WAY off... I dropped the mid/top to mix over the bassline... but it was off...

Next transition was pretty smooth. Seems on beat.

Mix into Onyx was screwed up.... I know what I was trying to do but that mix is screwed up. Overlayed Onyx on the bassbeat from NBK but it just didn't come out like I thought it would - train wreck extraodinaire.

Next mix into FTP wasn't too bad for a slam mix. Seems on time and BPM's sound like they match.

WTF?!? Why did I go back into Ante Up?

Mix back into Snoop - eh... ok... nothing special... Love this track though... But I like pretty much anything Snoop puts down (and his uncle too)

Mix into Mos Def was ok... strobe effect was 'ok'... but a little over the top. I think I used too much...

Mix into lud/southern hospitality was ok... brought the beat in too early and too strong but otherwise seems to be on time.

Mix into back that ass up was at the wrong time... I think I know what I was going for... it didn't work...

The effects were ok... better than before, but not real noticable.

WTF? mix out to don't do that... Sounds like two cats humping in a megaphone...

Outro... 'eh... ok'...

Damn... I wish I was drunk or something so I would have an excuse for this tripe...

Good thing I didn't listen beforehand... I would have lied about 'equipment failure' or something... or done another mix or something....

FYI, because nik asked...for equipment I'm using Technics SL-DZ1200's, and 'another' TCV solution (only with CD's)... I only have one 1200 MKII - the other I just won on eBay, will have it in a week or two but need to grab some carts. I'm also using a Numark DM1002MKII mixer - nothing fancy, but I got it because I loaned some equipment to Julls to take to the desert and the Mackie d.4 isn't out yet. I've only used it twice (this being the second time).

After I put the mix down I also realized that the bass and mid controls on the left channel weren't set to center... damn... I need a shot... Where's that bourbon I have stashed...
MusicMeister 8:29 PM - 27 May, 2007
I like everybody using the same tracks... or group of tracks with the 'mandatory' tracks being listed...

And I like using a single genre for the mix...

Can't wait for the next one... maybe I'll get a chance to redeem myself...

I don't know why you're so shy about mentioning that you are using Torq. You are not blatently advertising, so I don't see any problems with saying what you are using.
MusicMeister 9:18 PM - 27 May, 2007
I just like being careful...

Because I moderate on the Torq boards and provide a lot of help I just don't want to anyone to think that I'm trying to 'convert' people or anything like that. Even though I was on this board long before I bought Torq I just don't want to deal with the 'you're not using Serato go away' type crap that I dealt with in the past. I know I have a lot to contribute with regards to the business side of DJ'ing, equipment assistance, and the like.... I'd just rather avoid the entire issue altogether than have to explain myself over and over...

Sorry... but my ties to Torq are about to be shown to be shown even stronger in the next release which means that I want to be even more careful now than ever before. And no, I'm not an M-Audio employee....
nik39 9:24 PM - 27 May, 2007

And I already said I suck.... damn, what more do you want me to say? I'll turn in my decks and take 40 lashes with an RCA cord?

And yes, I was slamming a number of those transitions...

C'mon guys, that's not nice. MM said this is neither his style of music nor his style of mixing - and he still posted. :-)

Don't say anything else. On your next mix, it's OK if you can practice a little before you hit record.

And I'm sorry, but I don't see how that effect adds to any music. Would it be too much to ask a preview of just that effect on any other genre?
MusicMeister 1:01 AM - 28 May, 2007
It works well when used on minimalist and house type tracks. It can actually acentuate the beat. I'll see if I can throw something down with that effect on it and post it up.

Don't worry... I'm practicing my ass off between booking gigs and my day job... I finally got my setup pretty much complete at the house so I'm working on getting my mixes down....
MusicMeister 1:54 AM - 28 May, 2007
Sixxx - you asked about the effect I used and when it might work.

Keep in mind this is across a single track... but if you apply the effect properly when doubling up BPM it makes the transition nearly seamless.

Here's 2 different excerts of the same track. One with effect and one without. Keep in mind that this is the same portion of the same track so you can compare them directly one against the other.

Just a couple of points from good ol' Fort Dix . .

1.) Although I haven't been able to record my own lil' 15 minutes of pleasure with the mandatory playliist, I do have an opinion that I will share with you fine people now. After listening to all the submissions thus far, my two favs are DJ Sixxx's mix, and DEFinitely DJ Psycho Logical. Psycho gets the award for best drop/intro, and your cuts and mixes were super-on-point. Me and the soldiers in my room are bumpin your mix daily ...good sh-t man!
And sixxx, your cuts and blends are the dopeness as well... We have the same mixing styles, like when you blend the instrumental in before bringing the vocals in, and the goin back and forth - sh*t was dope man...good job

That's it, back to more Army crap - - keep me posted y'all ! !
theJAV 1:53 AM - 29 May, 2007
LoL.. I forgot 2!

2.) I listened to both of Music Meister's files...and I can't hear a dayum difference or any effect..sup?? What am I missing?
Psyko Logical 2:51 AM - 29 May, 2007
Thanks JAV, that shit made my day. Ha ha, good vibes feedback loop.
MusicMeister 2:51 AM - 29 May, 2007
The effect is called strobe. If you listen to the track with the effect it turns on and off every 4 beats or so.

That is unless I made a mistake and uploaded 2 copies of the same track - They should be different lengths.

And just so you know, I over exaggerated the effect to show how it works.
sixxx 4:00 AM - 29 May, 2007
OK. MusicMeister. I understand now. I can see how that effect MIGHT work on something that up beat. I still don't like it that much but it sounds 100 times better on that track you posted.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!
MusicMeister 5:06 AM - 29 May, 2007
No problem.... The biggest problem I have is the versatility I have available to me. I keep trying things... sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. When I'm playing at a gig I don't get to be as creative so sometimes at home I get a little overboard.

HP is shipping me a box for my laptop to go out for repair. The power port has been bothering me for a couple weeks - today it just outright died on me. They say a 5-6 business day turnaround... I might have a gig this weekend... don't know what I'm going to go but if I can get everything working on this old ass computer at home I'll try to put something down... if not, it's time to get old school with some burned CD's... I've figured it all out now, and maybe have resolved my issue. When I scratch, I have my fingers concentrated close to someone cutting on a 45. With the Flexi-Discs, my pressure is concentrated on that raised area of the label for swift cutting, but notice when I backspin, I grab a different part of the record. That part is towards the outer edge of the record and meshes with the felt and turntable JUST RIGHT.

So the butter rug covers the entire area of the turntable, thus not giving me the pickup I need when backspinning...the scratching is cool, but the takeoff is slow.

Regardless, I found one of those envelopes that 45's are shipped in, (not the one with the big cut out circle, but the square picture ones), and punched a hole in it, and voila!

I'm good.

Stay tuned bitches.

Im soooo late on this apologies guys but its deadline week here as we have an exhibition next week from Tuesday, so I will get around to it but when at the moment is a whole different matter.

Unfortunatley I dont make a living DJ'ing & have to go to work (unlike some of you lucky bastards ;) )So when I get a few mins I will rip through it then!

However I do have a Drum & Bass mix if any of you want to hear that? I used to dj drum & bass all the time, switched to hip hop, now play both! (Much like DJ Craze) (just with about a tenth of his skillz) eitherway you want it holla on the PM
