DJing Discussion

This area is for discussion about DJing in general. Please remember the community rules when posting and try to be polite and inclusive.

Your age and how long you have been a dj.

dJ bMaN 9:22 AM - 2 May, 2007
I'm just curious to know how old and how long some of you have been spinning. I've been on this forum for a while now and I've noticed a kinda battle between old school and new school dj's. There's also a lot of different views on the aspect of the "dj" so that made me ask the question. I'm 25 and been spinning for 11 years now.
Nicky Blunt 9:31 AM - 2 May, 2007

Wow how do you guys keep the Similac off the 1200's????

Old school here....

I am 44 and this is my 25th year, I started when I was in college (1982) because the DJ's who did the Frat and Sorority parties were "jukeboxes".

I was lucky to be involved in the evolution of Detroit Techno and was able to watch Chicago House evolve from near the inside.

I am a newbie to SSL. Hopefully it will give me another 25 years.
dj cubicle 2:44 PM - 2 May, 2007
Trust me, Art, if a set of 1200s would have somehow made their way north of Flint when I was a kid, I would have started then. I'm still trying to figure out how DJ Phizyx learned about real music and I was left clueless!!
dj skraps 2:48 PM - 2 May, 2007
31 years, bought myself my first setup on my 24th b-day (numark tt-100's & Gemini ps-525 mixer) didnt fully get into it til about 4 years ago (when i upgraded equip)...so i would say spinnin 4 years strong.
DPR250R 3:02 PM - 2 May, 2007
30.... been spinning for less than a year.

I have a lot to learn skills wise.... but what I lack in skills I make up for in music selection.

Picked it up after getting the bill from a mobile DJ team to do a private party for my 30th B-day. aI paid them as much as it would have cost to buy the equipment and do it myself.

Mostly doing private partys and just got a steady local spot on Friday nights. Pay is not much at all. The gig is more about the chance to get to play for people I do not know. That is a priceless education.
howcome 3:02 PM - 2 May, 2007
36 yrs old, been spinning since the late 80's. Over the last few years I kind of started losing interest until I saw a demo of Torq, which started my investigation into digital djing. I called my favorite dj shop who recommended SSL and a 57. On his advice I bought it and feel like I did when I first started.
Jordan Laws 3:03 PM - 2 May, 2007
13, I worked all summer 2 jobs to save up enough for a pair of turntables. They were like really shitty beltdrives but I didnt know dick and my mixer and needles were like the worst ever made. I remember when I upgraded a year later to 1200, the day I bought them I didnt realze how heavy they were and I remember walking down 7th avenue trying to carry them like my arms were gonna fall off

Age is in the eye of the beholder....or some shit like that...

My memory fails me...

And I'm not "Immature", (flips you the bird, and raspberries), I just don't take shit personal on the internet, and sometimes invoke my ability to control someone else's emotions via the Internet...

It's a very powerful thing.

Aittee...cool. Yeah it's cool to have been around when HipHop was at it's ABSOLUTE FINEST, and also distressing to see what it has evolved "into"...Or at least what people want you to BELIEVE is HipHop. That shit they play on the radio today is NOT HIPHOP.

What's funny, is that I can't picture myself retiring...and what's worse is that, the DJ game might REALLY move into iPod land, and we'll be right there with it...

25... When I was 15yo, I jacked my first set of TT from my uncle and dads state of the art 1970 Technic Sound System... They were Technic Direct Drive SL-Q3 (or something like that)and came aross a Pioneer knob style mixer. Got the Gemini DJ in abox around 18yo or so and 20yo, got 1200 black TT. Couldnt find what i wanted on vinyl and switched to CDJ-800's, but serato gave me the oportunity to dust of the 1200's again. Spent my first few years between DJing and producing HipHop but Ive been DJing hard for the last 2-years.

it's still hip hop it's just evolved into something that you personally don't like.

and dj'ing will never move into ipod land. at least not anytime soon. it's just not feasible. how is an ipod going to know to let a song ride for an extra verse if everyone is loving it or cut it short to keep it moving along? it's just not going to happen.

No, not having the iPod do the mixing, (which will probably come soon with beatmatch software...), but you as a DJ carrying all your "tunes" on your iPod and connecting it to Serato vs. an external harddrive.

papsworth 4:31 AM - 3 May, 2007
alright well even with beatmatching software connected to an ipod it's still not the same as having someone there djin normally. they actually did a test in a club, at night that the patrons weren't aware of with this in london. dj jesse rose played a set. then a computer did a set and he acted like he was playing that set too. (he was situated in a dj booth but it was perched above the dancefloor looking down so the clients couldn't see the fact he was faking it while the computer was djin.)

anyway after the sets they told the clients and almost all of them picked jesse's set as the better one over the computers. as gay as it sounds djin is too interactive for a computer to replace a person.

and as far as plugging in an ipod to serato there's no difference. an ipod is a little hard drive. i don't use externals but there's no difference between plugging in an ipod with a bunch of songs on it than plugging in a lacie drive or whatever to your laptop.

46.................... 29 years.
and I remember buying ..... that's right, I SAID BUYING my music in a RECORD STORE. 12" records were $1.99 and I remember spending my entire paycheck every Friday just to have the latest releases. I was a junkie back then and bought everything that came out on wax. I joined a record pool in 1980, and received 30-40 records a week for $25.00 (per week). I still own my vinyl collection (consisting of over 50,000 records) and will never part with it. Maybe one day, I'll post some pics of the dedicated room I have in my house with wall to wall records.
I swore that I would never go to CD's...., and here we are in 2007, finding myself converting my 7 univenture cases of CD's to mp3 format and using something called serato and a mac.
WHO WOULD'VE EVER THOUGHT THIS TO HAPPEN?
(Be easy on us veteran DJ'S... Remember... We Are the original PIONEERS)
Serato has now added 20+ years to our backs!!!.... Thanks guys!
Anyone have any remedies on getting your hearing back?

OK Louie,

I just noticed that you said the Pool was PER WEEK!

I was going to ask what pool was $25 per month. When I joined my first pool it was $45 per month.

Just curious what pool that was Louie. I was Asst Director of a Pool and Promotions Director for a few Record labels for a while. I knew most of the US pools in the mid to late 80's back in the day.

$1.99 vinyl - I wish. I was buying Imports back then at $5.99 and domestics were $3.99 I think. I was mostly buying House back then. We would drive to Chicago from Detroit some weekends on a Friday, listen to WBMX that night, and spend a ton of money at Importes Etc. the next day. it was crazy.

I was in a Record Pool called REEL RECORD POOL. The pool director was Gene Sotirios. The pool dues were $25 a week. $45 a month that you were paying was a great price.

I still have the promo 12" record "Try It Out" by Gino Soccio. The original $1.99 price tag is still on it. Some record stores here in NY sold "promo copies" even though they weren't allowed to. Full Disco albums were $5.99. Alec Constandinos, Cerrone, Kebekelektrik & Voyage are some original mint copies that I still have. Jimmy's Music World, Downtown Records and Vinyl Mania (which is currently stll open!) were stores that I shopped in back in the day. OK, now that I've dated myself... I think it's time to get back to work... lol.

I'm pretty sure Vinyl Mania closed down about a month ago. I haven't been down to Carmine Street in a while, but I'm almost positive they're gone. :(

41 years old.

First gig was April 24 1987 so the twentieth anniversary was about a week ago. It was the rare groove era here in London so I was playing funk.

Still spinning so I must have done something right.

anyway after the sets they told the clients and almost all of them picked jesse's set as the better one over the computers. as gay as it sounds djin is too interactive for a computer to replace a person.

This is very bad surveying technique. The fact that you told people which set was the Real DJ's before they answered the question very likely had an effect on their response.

my bad i typed it wrong. i didn't mean that they told them before they asked them. obviously that would make no sense.
