converting aac to mp3

robot_rock 9:21 PM - 6 April, 2005
when converting aac files to mp3, is there really a difference in sound quality between converting from aac to wav to mp3 OR going straight from aac to mp3?

If you convert to aac the tracks need to be converted to a lossless format which will be wav, so both ways go basically the same route.

Not really recommended if you an avoid it. Transcoding is pretty bad for quality.

You've already lost sound quality in creating an AAC file, you'll lost more quality in converting that file to MP3 (or any other lossy format, for that matter).

For the sake of your listeners' ears: don't do it.

Hello, All.

The majority of my music library is in AAC format, so to get going in Scratch Live I MUST convert to a compatible format.
I understand that 192 kbps MP3 offers a good balance of manageable file size and good sound quality.

So...?

Should I convert:

a. <AAC> direct to <MP3>, or

b. <AAC> to <lossless> to <MP3>?

A or B? Please advise. Thank you.

There is no a. a. has to be done internally with the intermediate <lossless> step.

AAC to WAV only.
Your WAV will sound like your AAC, however if you convert to MP3 your sound quality will be worse that your original AAC.

If you can, try to use original CDs and then rip to MP3 @ 192 kbps or higher.
