Breakbeat Thread! A genre of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) not many know of...

DJ Tecniq 6:05 AM - 1 November, 2010
This thread is strictly dedicated to Breakbeats. As a huge fan and supporter of breaks. I create this thread to share my musically knowledge and love of the genre known as underground breaks EDM (Electronic Dance Music) that's very popular but not played as often or well known around the world cause it stays underground. I'm going to post some of my personal favs. Most of these I have on vinyl they are truly some epic tunes. Comments are welcomed and if you have anything you'd like to share that's breakbeat oriented then pls do so. Some of the song links will be old classics and new releases. If you are a dj or a fan of electro I'd like to know your comments on the genre. Thanks all now enjoy the grooves and let the post begin!!!!

Yeah I first heard Kid Named Joe and thought it was pretty creative cause he used it to talk about him..."the phrase average joe was goin for a reason, joe's a guy who wears a shirt that says joe on it. joe's not just a name it's an idea....fathers expect more from a kid named joe....they took the name joe and made it JOE".. Slammin Hard was one of his best breaks remixes of joy energizer (trance). So far I have not seen it on youtube yet so i'll have to upload it myself. that's what really got his name out there that track was ALWAYS played on the saturday night house party & @ Amp in tampa. The bass is never ending in that song...so here it is.

used to be into breaks for a bit but was generally more of a dnb head.

I'm somehow ingrained in the breaks and nu-funk scene nowadays which i like, but i don't particularly love the genre - just seem to roll with the cats who make it a lot.

I find nu-funk to basically be funky breaks with more dubstep and disco influences nowadays...

Being from Louisiana, my first intro to electro music was DJ Trashy, that mix of Walk on Water from the Vocal Anthems album is byfar the best version of that song, and that Apple Bottom song, have been dropping that track nightly breaking it in. Love breaks, and being from the south, edm breaks go over quite well for crowds that are expecting mostly hip-hop

np man, i just don't want ppl to get confused and think that's breakbeat. One major reason of why i got into breaks most of the dj's & producers that created this stuff sre from florida, which i have much respect for. Alot of them bootlegged breaks versions of house & trance but i have to agree they made them better and did the song justice.

when I think of breaks, I think of:

Elite Force, Adam Freeland, Freq Nasty, The Crystal Method, Tipper, BLIM, Botchit & Scarper, TCR (Rennie Pilgrim), Uberzone, BT, DJ Icey (the non-cheese stuff) & Zone records, Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs, Andy Page, DJ Zinc, Meat Katie, etc.

I was more of a U.K. breaks head since the florida stuff never really evolved IMO.
DJ Tecniq 8:14 PM - 2 November, 2010
Yeah i think 303 only produced Slammin' Hard, as the original vinyl I have is titled "John Doe - Slammin' Hard" but you can buy the digital master as 303 - slammin' hard he may of been credited on more. I have all the john doe releases they used a john deere logo for their prints lol..

I see where you're coming from there are alot of florida breaks that are cheesey, above is more nu skool breaks which is more popular now. Florida breaks have died and were mainly popular in the south. When i first started dj'ing i spun florida breaks it was then later that i was introduced to the imports (uk nu skool) from there i was hooked.

they evolved, it was what they evolved into sucked, everything became E-Hop and with the advancment of technology it turned into everything new being turned into a poorly mastered overly digital fruity loop remix of some dumb ass rap song

i sooo agree. e-hop really ruined it for me, back then it was cool. e-hop got really big at the time. uk booty breaks & nu skool is where it's at now.
DJ Tecniq 8:44 PM - 2 November, 2010
this is interesting, since we're speaking of e-hop here is how it originally formed. I didn't know it was because hip hop took over the clubs. They were onto something i don't hear alot of e-hop now it's more booty breaks than anything

I have a feeling hip hop will soon die down. It's the most overplayed/ overrated genre in clubs around the world it is mainstream commercial shit. House lately has def made a come back. When breaks were around and popular house was hardly played. Now it's like on fire the productions are getting more advanced. I'm waiting for the electo takeover and i know it will soon come. Electro is the future of music. Hip hop will stay where it is, it's not evolving it's just.....there
Dj-M.Bezzle 9:21 PM - 2 November, 2010
i disagree because hiphop hs found the watered down common denominator formula to hit the largest audience, but club wise and underground it is a circle so i wouldnt be suprised to see electro or house make a comeup, but what i forsee is hiphjop adopting its way into these to, like what pitbuls doing.

Personally i want to get into dubstep, its so raw and grimeny and nooone here knows anything about it, i want to get in one the 1st floor of a trend not the bandwaggon.
DJ Tecniq 9:28 PM - 2 November, 2010
it's wierd dude cause im at a new spot now which is more dance than anything. And it's only 30 mins from where my old spot was. I basically quit my old residency cause all the ppl wanted was hip hop and nothing else i was getting tired of it and wasn't getting payed well...well im NOT that type of dj i like it all and love my uptempo stuff. So we dj'ed a new spot night before halloween it was a vj set mostly all dance & electro, by the end of the night we played breaks and the crowd response was just incredible. I see it as a positive cuz we get to play more of what we enjoy playing. It's a more older crowd than what i was used to but damn i love it.

i sooo agree. e-hop really ruined it for me, back then it was cool. e-hop got really big at the time. uk booty breaks & nu skool is where it's at now.

I always thought Dubstep was where breaks really evolved too. It is the strange bastard child of nuskool breaks, dub, and drum'n bass.

Hip Hop Phenomenon - Tsunami One (BT + argh, can't remember his name... Beber?)

Love this music.

Great parties! That was when we first met. hahaha I remember you used to go as Robtronik. I liked that name a lot!
Rob Pointer 11:00 PM - 2 November, 2010
he heh. thanks man. I may still use that monikor again, but when I do, it will be for released tracks as a producer.

It got kind of embarrassing to be introduced as robTRONIK when I turned 40. I was like, really? Bro (to myself), you have grey hair. Use your real name now, fo' god's sake. lol

BTW, another classic:

Uberzone - Moondust.

BOOM! so ahead of its time, imo.

@ doctorjon are you asian? alot of the stuff you are posting are asian breaks, i have nothing against this but alot of there productions were cheesey, bass was muffled, trebs were too high, some mixtapes were just awful. i use to go on hypnotika.org and download their sets. I was suprised to hear alot of florida breaks in some of the mixes. None of them ever credited the original producers they just put the song title on their mixes. Most of it was all Florida/Dallas breaks.

Yes i am asian lol. And yes i use to goto Hypnotika.org a lot also. I'm surprised you know about that. LMFAO, ive been a big fan of what i consider asian breaks for a while now, babyboi loopy burnz tinman HHH(RIP), but their sound got SSOOOOOOO emo, like the vocals they use really went deep into that female emotional spectrum that youd be half way throuh a mix in the car and all the sudden realise that people within earshot are prob lookin at you funney lol.

Tinman HHH vol 3 introduced me to one of my FAVVVVE tracks in the world though

DJ FIXXX - Thru Muisc

I wanted that on vinyl SOOOOOO bad but it was outta pressing EVERYWHERE

the only hypnotika dj's i really dug were dj greddy, slim tim, dj xoduzz, dj smooth-t and a few others..their mixes really stood out and they did most of their own production and it wasn't cheesey. @m-bezzle i have that track it's dj fixx feat. karma - thru musik, the other side was dj fixx feat. karma - i like it which i think was the hit song on that vinyl beside thru musik.

Another personal fave of mine (and i dont know if it was the track as is or how it was mixed because i vener found it off the mixtape) was Idiom - your sound (vocal mix) from DJ X club experience Vol 3, its intro where the bass drops before the this is the sound vocals and the build up int the break is absolutley euphoric for me, it is THE track that made me want to be a DJ and i think i heard it in escapades VIA dj scrub at escapades in Phat city NOLA who played a big part in me wanting to be a DJ
DJ Tecniq 9:27 PM - 3 November, 2010
^ it was also featured on promo only rhythm club dec 2002. i actually have a few rhythm club albums that had breaks tracks on them. not back that far thou there are some classics i really want.
Doctorjon 10:56 PM - 3 November, 2010
Thank you those djs like greddy n slimtim and burnz tinman hhh and loopy were great. Of course i mean they will be labeled as "asian breaks" only because asians remixed them. Hypnotika.org was awesome back than. I loved breaks so much that at one time i hosted a website called phresh-breaks dedicated to new breaks.
Doctorjon 10:59 PM - 3 November, 2010
That earshot thing happened to me once. The guys at the stoplight were like wtf is this guy and his girlfriend listening to lol

A really dope r2m record i have is Lethal Club Wax 5. it had breaks remixes of in the air tonight, lightforce join me & ocean after midnight. Def one of my fav trance breaks records. hypnotika.org dj's used lots of r2m stuff. Mainly why i listened to their sets. Back then i thought the transitions were good. But now when I listen to them i think wow...they weren't so great of transitions/mixes. You begin to catch certain things yrs down the road as you progress as a dj. A few of trashy's mixes/transitions weren't so great either..there is many i could name. But i give respect to them cause they were doing it live as mixtapes. It wasn't some shit perfectly lined up in ableton. That shows your true talent as a dj and what you get booked for anyway is your mixing ability.

I had the only breaks show on Ipartyradio as well.

Not sure one of them isn't as skilled as the other in clips below you see totally different styles. There are two Richie Rich's one that mainly spins just hood music n hip hop and one that's more versatile. this dj richie rich seen below..this is the RR that produces breaks but he's seen here doin a hip hop set and killin it! Oh man!!!! Im in South Florida and started spinning back in 97 cuz of breaks. I miss the old days!!! I sold all my old lp's but have EVERY SINGLE breakbeat I ever bought for all the local shops around West Palm down to Miami.... Great thread guys!!!

Ill try to post some of my old shows this week...
such a different style of mixing from 00 to 10
i mean, back then people would always say i burn through records (4-5 min tops)
when most edm guys out side of the breaks genre were playing tracks 7-10 minutes.

i went back and listened to a few shows and was like zzzzz,,,,,

KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE!

Richie Rich out of Orlando (a friend of mine) is a video remixer DJ, who makes all of his own custom video edits. He plays any/open format.
yes im very familiar with richie rich out of atlanta. He went by other alias names for some of his vinyl breaks releases. As far as I know he hasn't been credited for Promo Only but X-Mix is correct cause I have all his e-hop breaks mixes and every mix he produced for X-Mix's Dance Series. As of the orlando Richie Rich i didn't mean to knock him if he's your friend. Their styles are far diff from eachother was all i meant.

I came across some DJ Icey stuff back when he was DJ ICEE at this little vinyl shop in San Jose years ago called Solid Grooves. Not sure if they are still around, they keep moving every couple years.

Anyhow, I didn't know what the hell it was. I thought it was like a new version of freestyle or something. Good shit

I have the white label called Energy Traxx Vol. 1

www.discogs.com

I also got one called HBB by City-Wide Allstars which I understand is an Alias for DJ Icey.

Can't find a link online with audio. The HBB part is a sample of "Hey Buddy Buddy" from Planet Patrol.

Also look for Hands To Heaven (DJ Icey's Octane Mix) by Pure Sugar from 1998

Question: when did everything started? I know Break Beats, where called Drum & Bass in earlier days, or Jungle. It was big in the UK, in the nineties, had a fanbase in Germany too, when was/is it big in Florida or the US in general? These days you hear nothing about it, in Germany. I mean from a point of view if you are outside of the break beats scene.

I only stated it that way because breaks are a underground genre. But genres like House & Trance are commercial mainstream. And yes not alot of ppl & dj's know about breaks outside of the south.

Far as I know NO! drum & bass is like 150 bpm it's way faster than breaks. You can't even mix breaks into drum n bass maybe if you had the technics m5g's lol..

I feel like I should share something that's highly important to me and ppl of breakbeat. So I wanted to update everyone with a present from Infiniti himself. He's letting his studio master copies of his top productions available to download for free from his soundcloud page. He posted about it on Facebook. These are by far his best productions as he stands one of my top fav producers in electro breaks. Christmas came early.. DO NOT miss the chance to hear/play these. Enjoy! and don't thank me thank INFINITI!

The last track he posted if you scroll down is his "Looking For Something" album a continuous breakbeat mix. It's one of the top breaks cd's of all time all created by one producer as every track was produced and written by himself. Check the reviews from Amazon. I used to have this cd myself till it either got lost or stolen because I simply had it with me that much and played the hell out of it.

Not that much of a difference to Kenny "Dope" Gonzales presents The Bucketheads - Tha Bomb (these sounds fall into my mind) and honestly I prefer Tha Bomb. I know, it's a different type of music, but what is so important and original of that breakbeat music then? They just take some music and rework it a little. The same with all that music somebody posted on his soundcloud site and someone posted it in here saying this guys is so good and he creates/produces all his music, but when I listened to it I found out, all he did was remixing some existing music. It was good, no doubt, just rediculous when the post said he is creating/writing/producing everything.

They also do original breakbeat productions not just "remixing". And I have to disagree that it is much a difference than the original. The original is a house version the remix version is a breakbeat version these are two totally different genres of music. And it's much faster tempo which you can break to. Breakbeat had originated from break dancing.

Listen to this one, this is a booty breaks remix of busta's touch it, it was a signature in icey's sets.

Of course I know the difference between The Bucketheads - Tha Bomb - that's House music and that Breakbeat RMX, it has that different beat, I'm just saying it's not that much of a difference and I prefer the original, knowing you can't/wont play it in a Breakbeats set.
