BIG NEWS: Panasonic Kills Off Technics Turntables

TigerDave 8:50 PM - 28 October, 2010
Fans of analog music were dealt another blow when consumer electronics company Panasonic announced earlier this month that it would be discontinuing the audio products within its Technics brand, most notably the legendary line of analog turntables.

If you take into consideration the history of these reports, I am being most logical.

No actual sales #'s to prove or back anything up
No official Panasonic reports
No nothing except for the same websites that have helped spread the same rumors time and time again.

Said it once, i'll say it again.

Until I see it on official letterhead that they are discontinued. I won't believe it.

The phonograph is 123 years old and has survived every pics of musical technology that has come around so far.

I got 4 total.... but I actually want to replace my 3D's with the M5Gs...... so I need to eventually. Kind of dreading doing it because of the cost these days.

My MG5's are new Just before the price gouge. I figure they will be around for 10 years. My second set up is a few years old and if I find anymore great deals on craigslist I will buy them up. I figure even if they quit making them they can still be found past our lives.

Regarding the Technics brand itself, nothing has been decided other than the discontinuation of the mentioned products, the statement said.

Also I'm taking the whole article with a grain of salt considering they say

the company said in statement issued to The Tokyo Reporter.

Sounds pretty tabloidish to me

"An insider told us"

"A statement issued only to us and nobody else said."

When I see / hear it on TMZ that the Technics are discontinued, then I'll believe it. TMZ was the first to report Michael Jackson's death, so you know they're legit.

Shit. Its called Greed. It would take 2 years for them to start rolling back prices now. Once a few people bought them at 1099.00 They are going to try to sponge up as much money as they can.

Panasonic reactive statement - Production of analogue turntables has ceased

Panasonic has confirmed that it ceased the production of its Technics-branded analogue turntables this autumn.

After more than 35 years as a leading manufacturer of analogue turntables, Panasonic has regretfully taken the decision to leave this market. However, Panasonic will continue to sell headphones under the Technics brand.

We are sure that retailers and consumers will understand that our product range has to reflect the accelerating transformation of the entire audio market from analogue to digital.

In addition, the number of component suppliers serving the analogue market has dwindled in recent years and we brought forward the decision to leave the market rather than risk being unable to fulfil future orders because of a lack of parts.

Panasonic employees who have been working on the analogue turntable range have been redeployed elsewhere within Panasonic - many of them continuing to work in Panasonic´s Audio Video Business Unit
