after i analyzed all my tracks in SSL. i went to open a few to edit them. cool edit plays them as white noise, reconizes them as raw file formats. but when i use Sony Sound Forge they open no problem. any reasons why this is happening??????
nobspangle 7:25 PM - 15 January, 2005
I've not got cooledit just audition but it is basically the same, and I have no problems. Are we talking mp3 or wav files?
dj synystr 7:54 PM - 15 January, 2005
MP3
djpetey 12:44 AM - 16 January, 2005
I meant to post on this same problem a while back.... for me, its not necessarily after ssl analyzes them..... I think itunes does something to my tracks as well.... Either way, i cant open very many of my mp3s in cooledit anymore.... Anyone have a possible solution for this?
dj synystr 5:35 PM - 16 January, 2005

new version of cool edit?
dj synystr 2:37 AM - 17 January, 2005
nah i use the old one. Cool Edit Pro 1.1 the presets are alot nicer and usually on the money for the most part.
djpetey 10:39 AM - 17 January, 2005
im using an older version as well.... i really only use cool edit for quick loops and stuff like that.... id rather not have to buy an app for that little use or even upgrade cool edit for that matter..... any guesses on the cause of this?
tim 1:13 PM - 17 January, 2005
i posted about this a little while ago. I get the same problem when opening mp3's up in wavelab after using them in ssl.

didn't get anywhere with it.. i'm using wav file's for the samples i need to edit at the moment as they dont get affected
djpetey 2:38 PM - 17 January, 2005
i know my issue isnt coming from ssl becuase Im trying to open my master files (which have never seen ssl).... but they have all been ran through itunes. Although, thats cant necessarily be the problem either becuase some of them still do open in cool edit (which have been filed through itunes).... I cant blame it on a picky cooledit either though becuase 6 months ago, i had never had this problem and now its probably about 70% of my mp3s that dont open in cooledit..... i figure the serato boys have a pretty extensive knowledge of what can go wrong with an mp3. what do you guys think?
nobspangle 2:42 PM - 17 January, 2005
The mp3 support in the early versions of cooledit (pro 1.1 and 2000) is pretty lame. Is it getting hung up on version 2 id3 tags? Like I say I don't have this problem with Audition, which is the same as cooledit pro 2.
dj synystr 4:39 PM - 17 January, 2005
well like i said CE 2 SUCKS the presets are garbage the interface is BS. is there a new plug in for MP3's other than the one for CE 1.1?
SpinThis! 6:03 PM - 17 January, 2005
if cooledit can't open them, why not use winamp or itunes, convert the file to wav then open it up?
dj synystr 6:15 PM - 17 January, 2005
because i dont have time to reconvert each file i need to edit. if that was the case i could open it in Sound Forge like i have been doing. but when you have to clean up 30 tracks every day for radio shows it gets rediculous to have to reopen in another program, save it them reopen it again.
SpinThis! 4:04 AM - 18 January, 2005
reconverting? what do you mean? if you're talking about reencoding, that's what the program is doing anyway--if you open an mp3 file and make a change to it, it's actually transparently re-encoding the file back to mp3. you simply can't edit an mp3 file because it needs to be decoded first.
dj synystr 4:19 AM - 18 January, 2005
ok maybe people didnt read this post from start to now. when i ANALYZE a file in SSL i can not open it in COOL EDIT. i have done nothing but analyze the file in SSL not change anything. i am not the only one with this issue apparently.
nik39 9:45 AM - 18 January, 2005
Just to pickup SpinThis!'s note/response, when you open a file in Cool Edit, yoou are doing this to edit the file, correct? And if yes, then as he said, you do a simple decoding and then reencoding when you save it back to mp3 format.

Besides that, of course Cool Edit should open it. Maybe the older versions cant handle id3v2 tags, which SSL usess to store the analyze data.
nik39 9:46 AM - 18 January, 2005
What I meant with "of course Cool Edit should open it" is that it looks like a bug, but we need to find out on which side, SSL or Cool Edit.
tim 11:34 AM - 19 January, 2005
hey nik, if its happening in Wavelab too doesn't that point to it being an ssl problem?
dj synystr 5:28 PM - 19 January, 2005
yesiiiiir. i had to use CE 2.0 to edit some tracks. i dont like 2.0 its slower and has horrible presets.

Josh 10:44 PM - 19 January, 2005
hmmm, there's no 1.2 with id3v2 support?
tim 6:16 PM - 26 February, 2005
Hey, did anyone come up with a solution to this? ssl 1.3 still renders my mp3's unreadable in wavelab..
dj synystr 7:40 AM - 27 February, 2005
i dont know josh, how would i check? i dont have updates for my CE 1.2
s42000 3:04 AM - 15 March, 2005
This is getting to be a naggin problem. i can edit files okay using Wavelab but after playing via SSL I am unable to open the same files .. Has a solution been found ?
tim 7:38 PM - 15 March, 2005
yeah, ditto s42000..

quoting nik39 on this. I suggest keeping the original file as wav to edit, then convert a version to mp3 to play out. Decoding/reencoding won't improve the quality! Even encoding once can be to much :)

With over 30,000 files its easier if SSL got fixed and NOT do this anymore. Had I known this would be a problem I would have taken precautions but now it seems my collection is ruined !!

I ... We.... all trusted our files would be safe :(

How do you even fix the messed up files ?

Ummm, no... It was my way of saying that I haven't had any trouble with SoundForge6 while editing mp3's... :)

I thought we came to the conclusion it has something to do with the tags. The problem doesn't seem to be with SSL but with cooledit or wavelab. I have no problems what so ever using cooledit 2 or adobe audition and as s42000 has said upgrading wavelab to version 5 solves the problem there.

Nope the problem is still there with Wavelab 5 ...
s42000 4:03 AM - 17 March, 2005
arrrgggh this really stinks ...

I have a gig tommorrow night and cannot make some quick edits ..
dj synystr 3:57 PM - 17 March, 2005
you right but why is it only after SSL analyzes them. to me there should be a way to correct it with SSL if possible so it works it these other programs. why should people have to go out and buy a different editing program just to use SSL.
s42000 7:30 PM - 8 June, 2005
Any updates to this ... Mods ????
Nick 11:07 PM - 8 June, 2005
I think this may have been fixed in version 1.4. (It should be out soon)
s42000 1:56 AM - 9 June, 2005
What's the fix for the 1000's of un-editable files I now have ?
Will running them through 1.4 fix the files ?
s42000 3:06 PM - 10 June, 2005
*bump*

Major gig coming up this weekend ... It's VIBE MUSIC FEST in ATL and so happens it's the MIDTOWN MUSIC weekend too.

Is there any fix available? Cause I read from the ableton board:
Quote:
Now, regarding Serato Scratch, I am a little concerned about using it with live. I read on this forum that there is a problem with Serato changing your audio files (writing inaudible data that represents the tagged info for the track) that renders the .asd file obsolete. Not cool. If Serato has fixed this, then I would get back into it, but otherwise it's not worth it.

Thats some pretty bad advertisement.
s42000 3:48 PM - 26 July, 2005
Not just yet, I did upload one of the files for inspection by the dev team.
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 5:06 PM - 13 September, 2006
question:

after SSL analyzes the track, did u shut down SSL prior to launching Cool Edit? or is SSL still running?

i noticed in 1.444, while i am building my overviews, and i preview a track in windows media player.... SSL locks up and has issues once it gets to that track that i already have opened in Win Media player. now days, i make sure to leave SSL alone when building overviews.

Can you upload a sample? We'll need both the original version that works fine in the audio editor and then the same file after SSL has analyzed it. I need to be able to compare the files to see the problem. Thanks.
maydo 3:57 AM - 22 September, 2006
cool edit cant open VBR mp3s
so convert them to CBR or wave and they will work
