1965. i wonder what tunes were out during that era.
Detroitbootybass 11:31 PM - 21 July, 2006
Not quite true... there were multiple mono mixers throughout the 60s. One of the most notable was the Bozak CMA-10-2D (10 input 2 channel output) which was released in 1964. The first sterophonic mixer was the Bozak CMA-10-2DL which went public in 1970 - this model became the industry standard. 'Rosie' was just the first mixer to use a crossfader instead of rotary knobs.

That's a rotary tradition!

The Rane 2016 is a knockoff of the Urei 1620... which in turn is a knockoff of the Bozak CMA-10-2DL.

:-)
Dj KaGeN 4:22 AM - 22 July, 2006
Oh, the madness. I skipped that day in rotary mixer school history, sorry. Im new. thanks.
DJ Stuart (AR) 6:05 AM - 22 July, 2006
I hate rotary mixers. I feel like working on a power plant or something (Homer style).

Which is turn was a knock-off/miniturization of the large audio consoles ("boards") used in radio stations, which back in those days typically used huge (4-inch knobs were common) rotary faders. (Those rotary faders, on higher-end models, were actually step-attenuators made out of large numbers of precision resistors...the reason being that this type of construction was more durable and had lower distortion). Do some googling/Wikipedia searching about old Gates, Auditronics, LPB, McMartin, etc. broadcast consoles if you want to learn more about some products that had quite a bit of effect on how DJ mixers developed and evolved.
DjWoody 6:44 PM - 22 July, 2006
According to Wikipedia....

Quote:
Bozak ceased production on the death of its founder and the designs for the famed CMA series mixers were passed to JBL-Urei Electronics. Current production, however, is by the Rane Corporation.

So does this mean the MP2016 is what evolved of the Bozak? What about the new limited edition Urei 1620? Is Rane making those too?
DJ_CARY 8:40 PM - 22 July, 2006
Bozak is the OG of all mixerS! *period*

Urei copied Bozak (Urei 1620) and made it better *it depends who u asked*

Urei 1620 LE is a remake of the original 1620, Sundcraft bought the rights for Urei to make the 1620. LE (limited Editon) is not really Limited, they are making like thousand and thousand of 1620 LE. Why call LE right?
Urei 1620 LE is now made in CHINA.
NOt like the older/rare 1620 and Bozak, which is made in the USA.

Rane MP2016 is a new mixer that derive from Bozak or Urei.

It's just that UREI made it more popular.
Every Mixer is more of a copy of the UREI 1620.

But still....BOZAK is the SHizzNiT! & the Urei 1620

It has that WARM Sound.

Unlessyou wanna spend $4000 for a Allen & Heath V6 (all tubes)
Detroitbootybass 9:10 PM - 22 July, 2006
The Rane MP 2016 is a direct remake (first sold in 1999) of the Urei 1620 (notice the # swap). The Urei was brought to the market after Bozak stopped production around 1980 or so. Rudy Bozak passed away in 1983, but he sold the company back in 1977...

Soundcraft makes the new Urei 1620 LE (in China, BTW) and just went into production last year.

Bozak was making mixers from the 60s until 1980.

Urei 1620 (the real one) was made from 1982 (first prototypes came in 1981) until 1987, if my memory serves me correctly. It was owned by Harmon and it's parent company, JBL.

That Wiki post is a bit misleading...
skinnyguy 9:48 PM - 22 July, 2006
