Video XFade Suggestion - for use w/o 57SL - Hip-Hop/R&B DJing (Tricks)

Ive been gigging using just video for a while now and the club i play has the SSL Box only - and so xfading video is done via arrow keys.

(Interlude: VSL has been rock solid - not a single glitch whatsoever for a long time now)

Anyways, the problem Im having is that while video mixing can already be very limiting (not always having video clips for each song) the one area which Ive noticed that ive cut back on are turntable tricks.

Even simple looping - i dont do it because im conscious of the fact that i have to use the arrows to move the xfade, and also because none of the effects seem to suit (IMO).

I was wondering if it would be possible to have a xfade where when you move the xfader, instead of the 2x2 or the 3x3 screens, you get a 2 screens next to each other. Also with this, if the velocity of the turntable is negative, it would be cool to fade out the video image.

so when you backspin and loop most of the time you will get the 1 screen on, while you are spinning the other record back - visually it won't be so bad.

I know this is very specific - but if this is not the solution, can anyone else let me know what they do to do something as simple as backspinning. And no - i dont want to bring a MIDI controller because that's really just the same thing.

If you do not use a MIDI mixer you will always be limited with video. Bottom line. These things your asking (as I understand them) can be done.

It's like going golfing and using a 5 iron to hit off the tee. You can still golf and yes eventually will get the ball in the whole but not like someone who has the same skills as you and has a better tool, ie. driver.

If you don't want to get a MIDI mixer or it is too expensive a MIDI pad is like $100.....

i dont agree with this - when i mentioned video is limiting its not because of the control aspect (ie what the 57SL offers and what a MIDI Controller can control) but my comment was just in reference to how not all songs have video clips. But this is not my main point

and no - unless im completing missing something, i dont think there is a cross fade effect where there are only 2 screens next to each other. There is a 3x3 but to me this doesnt always suit what I am trying to do.

i think there is an effect where if the turntable pitch slows down to zero then the video will fade out, but i dont think it fades out if its a negative velocity - which is something that might be cool given the situation that i find myself in at the club.

its got nothing to do with price. all i need to control when in the club is the video xfade - i havent needed to control anything else so its pointless to get a MIDI mixer. Not just that - but getting a MIDI mixer doesnt help my situation, nor does it improve my skills somehow. Backspinning just requires me and the turntables!

Im just after a solution for backspinning which translates visually - when you have a setup with no 57SL, looping 1, 2 or 4 bars is something i dont want to do because visually it doesnt seem to look good (or make sense).

if you can backspin and visually show this (again without the 57SL) i think this would be a nice addition. my xfade suggestion was just that - a suggestion - if there is another suggestion which would be better then cool.

the following is my opinion (on the xfades effects i use):

- grid (any of them): to me the screens can be sometimes too small to visually see that you're backspinning

- grid 2x2: this is one that i would use to backspin - now that im thinking about it a video effect with just 2 screens next to each other is kinda pointless - the video size is the same width as the 2x2. but i still think adding the option to let a negative velocity fade the video out would be visually nice

- box, push, everything else: i just dont think works for backspinning

again - this is just my opinion im interested to hear what other people do when they are doing turntable tricks w/o the 57SL and how they make it visually look good and it also making sense

and when i say loop i mean playing 1,2 or 4 bars on 1 deck then scratching in the same break and deck 2 then looping that break - just so we're clear what i mean
