I see you only have 512mb of RAM installed. Scratch Live's minimum specs are 1GB of RAM. Are you able to install more?


As ninjagaijin says, running a RATT report will help find other causes for the dropouts:

Although I doubt your laptop will be very happy until you get more RAM.

Can't see any reason not too, another 512mb stick would only be about $15 and is a 5 minute install.

Yep - as Laz219 says, it's cheap, and fairly painless. And any workplace wouldn't really care about the install as long as it was done properly (you could even buy the RAM and get their IT guy to install, or just take it into a computer shop to do to keep them happy).
What I wouldn't do is just install it and not tell him though! hah That's a recipe for disaster in case something went wrong later down the track :-P

im gunna get a 1gb ram and there will still be 256 left of the old ram so it should go smoothly :)

i think its just the computer now :(

dont worry about it
it only happens once every half hour/40 mins so it doesnt really affect me anymore :)
also im gunna delete some more progs from the laptop and see if it helps any further

will do a ratt scan later in the year though

Both of these are extremely high!

NDIS.sys - This is your network.
> You will need to disable your networks (in your Network Connections in the Control Panel)

USBPORT.SYS - This is the USB port driver.
> Try connecting to a different USB port.
> Use a different USB cable.
> Go to your computer manufacturer's website and check if there you are using the most up-to-date drivers.
> Try using an external power supply for your hardware.

Check and see if the driver update is available, this should hopefully fix any issues. Make sure you do try this after disabling the network stuff.


Once you have done the above, how do you get on?

i disabled all connections
there were no new drivers for USBPORT.SYS
connected to a new usb port
tried a different usb cable

Can you do another RATT report with the networking/wireless all off?
What is the make and model of your laptop?

Just making sure that you're also not running any other programs at the same time as Scratch Live (this included anti-virus programs).
Make sure you don't have any sleep modes, screen savers or hard drive sleep modes selected.
Also so your power management options are set to full / everything is on and not conserving power.

So it looks like the networking is fine now.

The USB port is still a major concern, this is pretty high. Some manufacturers aren't very good at making drivers, and this coupled with low end parts can cause issues when running USB devices, even if they 'meet' the technical requirements of the USB1.1 or 2.0 standard, there can be a lot more that can cause dropouts.

Have you tested this box on another computer? Let's try and remove the potential for the USB port on it to be broken before we try anything else.

im afraid there are no other computers with the minimum specs in my house :(

i have tried changing usb ports and nothing changes :(

contrary to belief, my sister will let me use her mac to test serato on :)

alright, i tested serato on my sisters 2.1ghz intel core 2 duo 1ghz ram macbook and it worked like a dream
one weird thing was that on the dell, the latency can go to the lowest, wheras the macbook could nearly go to the lowest
that means that the dell should be the better computer for it, exept it has the dropouts
any suggestions?

ok i have a thing to try.. check my thread for full details : www.serato.com (go near bottom of thread).. bit about hidden & ghosted device in device manager.. I think this work computer needs this checked out, main culprit i would think

Also first set latency to 5 - 10 ms, don't go lower until you sort out the dropouts

Unfortunately, the problems are occurring with known devices here, just that fixing the issues is hard here.

What usb buffer size / latency are you on?

i tried uninstalling some ghost drivers which didnt do anything
i upped the latency and i can get it as low as 4 without any probs

keep at 4 if no probs!! 4ms is nothing really, even scratching at 4ms you won't notice the difference.. test it with your ears, when you scratch, do you notice the sound is much later than the movement? It's only going to be 4 milliseconds :)

0ms only for best computers.. 4ms about best you can get for others.. I am at 4ms and very happy :)

Yeah, 1ms or zero is for computers that are pretty solid.
4ms is good for a computer like yours which is only a small amount better than the minimum specs.
