Cracking and popping sounds when playing

Da Archer 9:58 AM - 4 November, 2016
I'am hearing Pops and crack sounds whenever i'm playing using SDJ 1.8.0 and vci380 on a Macbook unibody core2duo with 4gb ram 320 hdd 1tb hdd for music(external) with 10.9.2 OSX. The sound seems like plugging in an rca or xlr cable with the volume up. Any advice? Thank you! :)

Also I have 1 problem wherein OSX could not see this mp3 track but whenever i switch to bootcamp windows it works fine. The file ends in mp3, I have also converted the audio but no luck..SDJ can see the track but whenever i try to load it, SDJ says: "This track could not be found here" The mp3 file is located on my external hdd together with the rest of my tracks in a folder.

Update serato.

Do not do this it will only be worse. You have an intel core 2 duo which is no longer supported for newer SDJ Versions. I suggest trying any SDJ 1.7 version as it supports the core 2 duo processor. SDJ 1.8 and above all require a better processor like an i3, i5, or i7 processor which is written in the recommended specs which were updated with 1.8

So basically if you want to stay current with new SDJ software you will "have" to upgrade your laptop to an iprocessor. Intel Core2duo is unfortunately old technology.

Not true brother.....I have a macbook early 2008 and it runs smoothly with no issues. Also running serato 1.9.3 with the link feature. Alot of equipment is still compatible with core 2 duo.

Then it must have some great specs for it being that old. He may not have as good of laptop as you though.

I have had this issue before and to be honest only with Vestax controllers ie the 300mk2 and the 400. I didn't with the 380. You may need to clean all your contact points with isoprol alcohol or a good contact cleaner like WD40 Specialist fast drying contact cleaner. I would recommend you spray all your XLR/1/4" inch RCA inputs and all USB. Also your speaker contacts Speakon and so on on both the speaker input and the cable ends. The cracking and popping could just be down to dirty contacts.

Tried a different latency setting?

I had the same issues. I ran my Vestax VCI 400 with the latency at 20+ which is really high but it still did not solve the issue. I found that when I change the speaker cable to the second input in the speaker the popping and crackle disappeared. After finding this I cleaned every terminal thoroughly. The trouble is I sent the 400 back to the dealer so I did not get to test it again, shame. I could not as a result certifie the controller as the main cause but what has anyone got to lose by spending less than £10 on a good cleaner regardless of which you should have in your arsenal anyway if you use electronic hardware as dirty terminals causes snaps, pops and crackles..mine was just like a bowl of Rice Krispies untill I cleaned.

No.....it maybe that the OS needs to be reinstalled to reinstall something that is missing and also keeping the laptop updated until it cannot update anymore also did wonders. By reinstalling you do not lose any data. you still have the same folders etc. just a update to the OS software and you are back in business.

its a regular core 2 duo 2.4 GHz 4GB ram 144MB

Also when was the last time you repaired your permissions? Or verified the disk? That slos plays a role.

Cracking = PnT

Yeah if you got PNT enabled disable that shit it uses way too much CPU and can cause audio issues.

Hi there! We are end of 2019 and still using the Vestax VCI 380... until the sound coming out of my speakers started to crack like crazy like a bowl of rice krispie!

I succeeded to fix it and wanted to share my experience:
- cleaned the inside of the vci 380 and its connectors w/ contact spray. Useful as general maintenance but didn’t solve the prob.
- tried to use the mixer in stand-alone mode to see if the crack would be there. I plugged my turntables and played in mixer mode: NO CRACKS.
- rebooted my mac, tried again to play from serato. Still the cracks.
- changes diverse serato settings like latency, etc. Still the cracks.
- “da archer” on this forum suggested to change the USB cable. Was skeptical but I did it: THE CRACKS DISAPPEARED! YEEES!

Hope this will help others,

Best,

R. Krispie
