Using Sync/Not Using Sync -- Beatmatching Hip-Hop questions

I'm new to the scene. I just recently got a mixtrack pro 3 and im currently using serato intro on a macbook

Im mainly into Hip Hop right now. I have been trying to beatmatch but seems like a lot of the songs are way different BPMs

I try using sync, but It always makes one of the songs sound extremely fast or slow
I try to beatmatch without sync but the sliders do not range enough.

-- do you have to play music with closer BPM's or is there a way to make it match?
-- what is the proper way to use sync?

You need to play music that is at least similar in BPM so that you can match the tempo with the pitch range you have available (and not have to speed up/slow down so much that it sounds terrible)
The exception being you can do things like double/half time (ie mix a 60bpm track with a 120bpm track)
