To Buy Serato, or Buy "Serato Ready" Hardware?

So I downloaded the trial of Serato, thinking I'd be able to hook up my midi controller and play around before deciding to purchase a full controller. Then, I realized there's only one deck and barely any functionality without a controller plugged in.

My question is this - would all functionality be available if I purchased the Serato license for the discounted $70 price online right now, or would I still HAVE to have a Serato compatible device plugged in to get functionality such as multiple decks and a fader?

If this is the case, I'm going to skip on the discounted Serato license, and just buy a controller that comes with Serato full like the DDJ-SR (any better recommendations?)

Thanks for your help

Unless you buy an SL3 or SL4, which 'gives you SDJ for free' but then cannot be used with any 'SDJ upgrade' controllers.
