Only one set of Pad performance mode selector buttons in the middle ?...does that mean that you cant operate A set of pads, on a different performance mode than the other_?

Nice piece of gear, only thing i do not like on a first look is the trim level knobs, that are kind of squeezed there between the useless (performance wise) phono/line selector and the filters..

It should bring some good competition if it goes well...:)

Dear Serato and Especially Pioneer.

Thanks for this new product - it looks very promising

I have 1 serious question which is not that DJ related. All (and I really mean all) semi proffessional and proffessional venues, that may be fixed installations and mobile/touring setups uses digital loudspeaker management systems, and in many cases also digital mixers in FOH (typically on festivals etc.)

Since (almost) all DJs nowadays plays files or other digital format - why then convert the files to analog signals, put it out on analog phono, Jack or XLR connectors, convert it back to digital in the FOH or the speaker management system (digital crossover) and then again back to analog before being amplified and put out on the speakers?

It does not make any sense, that you, in 2015 where digital audio has been around for about 35 years, keep making new products _without_ a proffessional AES/EBU digital output - or at least an unbalanced S/PDIF output. There might be issues with digital mixing inside the mixer with regards to latency - but there are tons of digital FOH mixers out there that does this job with a latency that is so small, that it is usable even in the broadcasting industry - which in many cases is an industry setting a remarkable higher standard level for audio equipment in almost all perspectives.

I am running Denmarks #1 Mobil Discotheque measured on equipment, and I still have to fight with analog DJ mixers - even the Pioneer DDJ-SX which is a pure digital mixer/controller only has analog outputs. So does the flagship controller DDJ-SZ.

It is NOT that costly to put in an extra male XLR connector and connect it to the same signal source as the internal Digital to Analog converter. So get on it! We are in 2015 now.

I know that many DJs does not talk about this - this is because many DJs does not care enough about sound quality and especially problems with long analog audio cables (also balanced ones can be a problem) - but I am both an experienced DJ on my 27th year, and also a B.Sc. - and it is indeed a problem that is very easy to solve. And if not the worlds number 1 supplier of Pro DJ Gear and one of the worlds best makers of pro DJ software are the ones who to implement digital outputs as a standard - then who is?

Looking forward to your next new product. I am not buying this one - because of the lack of digital output.

Hi there, I have the Numark Mixtrack Pro II that I use with the serato dj software I bought. This is my set up #1 for small gigs.

I have as well the Serato scratch SL1interface that i use with my Pioneers 1000's and a Rane TTM 56 battle mixer. Set up #2.

But

I really like the new mixer, The Pioneer DJ DJM-S9 mixer.
I would love to use it with my 2 Pioneer 1000 decks.
Especially if i can use the 2 channel to control 4 decks. That would be amazing.

How exactly can i achieve this with my Pionner 1000's and is this possible.

How do you switch between the 15 onboard FX? Having "back spin" and "vinyl brake" as 2 of the 6 (printed on button) onboard FX is a strange choice.
The only thing missing in my opinion is the "Time" rotary knob for the FX (and Spiral Echo.)
Other than that, this mixer has me pretty excited.
... It'll still be too expensive for me anyway :)

Hey Nik,

As far as I know this will not change before release. It may be something that we are able to change in a future release but at this stage there are no immediate plans to do so.

It makes sense for the pads to have a dual mode. Hope Pioneer makes it happen. How will people juggle with one deck while drumming with the sp6. lol I wish!

I noticed that one of the features is that in Serato DJ we will have the option to re-map the pads. So how will that feature will we be able to overide of the modes? I personally don't use the slicer functions so I would want to re-map to have the top 4 rows for cue points and the bottom 4 pads for exact auto loops. Will this be possible?

Hey Nik,

As far as I know this will not change before release. It may be something that we are able to change in a future release but at this stage there are no immediate plans to do so.

Cheers, Sam

Ok got you as far as planning goes...was kind of confused cause I ve seen some pictures online , laying out different colors per side....one side was RGBd and the other one blue, indicating a different performance mode on each set of pads at the same time....

Understood that no different pad modes are able in any way at the same time, either natively or mapped...picture was bogus i guess...

Cheers

My thoughts on the Mixer so far.....

I literally had to get kicked off several times from spending too much time on it. Rane did not have a booth this year so there wasn't really much for me to go to. I was forced to walk to the floor as I let others get a chance on the mixer....

Overall, the mixer is a beast!

The "Tension Adjust knob" is definitely one of the most innovative things that Pioneer put on this mixer. You can have it set so that it is stupidly loose...... (I couldn't even control it) or super tight. My sweet spot was a few notches from the most slickest point.

Compared to my recently purchased 57 MK2..... this thing definitely has alot more bells and whistles to it.

On board Effects are limited but its definitely a plus to have them. They are post fader (Cross/UpDown) and in beat/time with the Serato Software.

Now, because I owned both Rane and Pioneer products for many years I can do this comparison.

Build Quality: Both are excellent build quality..... Like comparing an Audi to a Mercedes. Its which flavor moves you. I am a Rane man myself, but I definitely would love this Pioneer Mixer. The weight is similar, over confidence in the build is the same.

Functions: Pioneer > Rane. There is definitely more buttons and more movement features in the Pioneer. 8 Cue points vs 4 on the Rane. The adjustment knobs on the Pioneer seem reminiscent of the Older 909.

Faders: Up Faders are not Magvel like the cross fader on the Pioneer. Rane IMO wins for having all the mag faders the same. Easier to replace.

Customer Service: I had to throw this one in there because this is a BIG BIG BIG plus for Rane. I can call them for some dumbest questions and someone will take the time to answer it. It has that "Mom and Pap" store feel where everyone you talk to is an expert. When I call Pioneer, it seems more on the lines of someone looking on a screen going through troubleshooting tips one by one. One time I called Rane and we got carried away with something else and music only to order spare parts like the 57 Buttons or the 62 Switches.... They sent me a huge bag of spare buttons when I only asked for 4 replacements. Great people to talk to! When I needed my 62 refurbished, Rane wanted me to send in the mixer. A phone call to them explaining that it was currently my only mixer and I couldn't go three weeks without it, and they sent me all the parts for me to do the refurbishing myself. (Voided Warranty though but the fact they allowed me to have that option is definitely a plus)

Props man.

Got a few questions if your cool with answering them.

What's the mixer made of metal or plastic or a combination of the two?

Did the crossfader feel cheep or did it seem like it would be something long lasting and were those rubber bumpers in when you tested it?

How was the tension and the curve on the channel faders?

Lastly how were them toggle switches?

Mixer was made of metal. Similar to the 909. Definately had some good weight to it.

Cross fader was definately a premium fader. The up faders felt solid as well.... Not much resistance but they didnt feel cheap like controller faders. Rubber bumpers were in and gave the fader a nice "bounce" to them. To remove them you have to take the plate off.

Full adjustments on the sound curves for all faders as well as reverse.

Toggle switches had a good feel to them. You were not going to be hitting one by accident.

Props for the headsup. Dope youtube vid.

That's good the channels aren't stiff. I just hope they are not soldered into the board and are innofader compatible. Cool if you ever get a chance to confirm that with a rep.

If only it had a footswitch. Still this is definitely on my watch list.

Crazy how many youtube views the promo vid got compared to 57mkII's. I think even Scratch Bastid's S9 vid got more looks then the one he did the mkII. That Pioneer branding!

4 channels would be fun with 2 really small midi platter to mix my reggetong beat and I use my 1200 turntables for the acapellas, and with those pads no need of the ddj sp1 since I use traktor z2 as midi mappable with rane sl2 but if this mixer cost as much as my 2 traktorz2 I have new man I sell my traktors z2

I just picked one up on Monday, I went to two Guitar Centers the first One had just sold their last one 15 minutes before I arrived. I hit up the second store on Colorado Blvd and picked up their last one. The faders are buttery smooth and the sound quality is much higher than my SL1 box. My SL1 box also wasn't playing well with my new laptop and I was getting very frustrated trying to figure out why the audio was dropping out. I even ended up havng to use my old laptop for a Halloween gig because I was afraid the new laptop would crap out. I purchased the Mixer two days after Halloween. Best Purchase I've made in quite sometime, it's a huge life saver and a long overdue upgrade. It would still be nice if Serato can make sure that SL1 box still works as I have 2 of those and I know there are many of those boxes still out there and I may need to plug in to someone else's box someday if that is what they have set up... Oh, who am I kidding? This mixer is so bad ass I'll probably lug it everywhere with me LOL. I made the switch from Serato Scratch Live to Serato DJ once I purchased the mixer it works really well so far and the sound quality is top notch thanks to the Mixer's 24 Bit processing and USB 2.0 over the 16 bit processor and USB1 of the SL1 box. The price would be more in the sweet zone at $1400-1500 That $1800-1900 price tag ($1699 + tax) is a bit much for a mixer no matter how nice it is or how rich you are. But I will say this it is the nicest mixer I've ever mixed on! I have finally replaced my Pioneer DJM-909 and am glad I waited the 3 months after I discovered the mixer and discovered it was not going on sale until the end of October. - www.djemir.com

I got mine the other day..... I originally did a pre-order online from a vendor but they said that it would not be out until the end of this month. When I saw GC already had a few in stock I called my local GC and they did have 1. My pre-order price was 1400 but I didnt want to wait so I canceled and went to GC. to get the 1699 out the door I placed my order online and did a pickup. They agreed and saved me about 115 bucks in taxes.
Henry GQ 9:57 PM - 6 November, 2015
the pioneer s9 is probably the best mixer i ever used... ive owned the rane 57, 68, 62, and 64... and hands down i think pioneer nailed it! the effects are easy to get too! i really liek the way they set it up with their own effects.. but on the right of the mixer with serato effects.. this is huge IMO. plus the toggle switch to control it all? fuck yea its on point

the big 8 cue buttons on each side are awesome and of couse they sync with the colored cue points in serato.. which is a big selling point with me! and then being able to switch thru cue points to loop rolls and the sample? plus more? um yessssss!!! so easy to manipulate!

the sound quality is waaaaaaaayyyyyy better than anything rane has put out! volume wise and quality is phat! lol i have so much headroom without diving into the red on the board. my 62/64 would be buried in the red!!!

cons- the mic is better on the rane... for some reason i get more feedback on the pioneer.

cons- i dont like the way they have the back set up with the rcas and xlrs.. its a mess when u have everything plugged in.. rane beats em up with this

i dont think anyone would be upset if they bought this pioneer.... im not. i love it

^^ You need a bib bcuz you are drooling all over the S9 lol congrats!

My son and I saw it at GC last week but did not get it. The plastic sides and face plate made me go wtf.... You know I buy anything new asap! But again, when i touched the S9, it just not made me want to pull the credit card out, LOL. But as a gearwhore... I will eventually buy one.

GC was offering $100 off while me and my son were walking back to our car, but no sale.

Well at least my son tried the Magvel fader :)

as far as I know yes it's just a flick of a switch. I can't specify on cd decks but to play real vinyl and DVS is just a flick of the A or B switches👍🏻
RennieB 4:05 PM - 24 August, 2016
Ok Thank You. Just got one today, and haven't tried it as yet. How do I connect two laptops to use serato, if I am also using the cdj900 nexus. To me all the usb from the cdj 900 have to be plugged in a usb powered hub. I can plug in one laptop at back of the mixer and the powered hub on the same laptop. But the other laptop, wouldn't the usb powered hub have to be removed and plugged in that laptop also?

Or once the cdjs are connected to a laptop and a powered hub, and the second laptop isn't connected to the powered hub then both units can still access and use serato with the cdj?
WarpNote 11:12 AM - 31 August, 2016
Connect laptops directly to the mixer's usb A & B ports, use the hub for CDJs.
However, the CDJs cannot be hooked up to 2 laptops by usb at the same time, so either rune control signal off a usb for the second laptop, or you will have to switch over the usb (hub) at times when Latop A takes over for laptop A...

I liked the thinner cross fade knob on the 909, how does the cf knob on the s9 compare when cuttin'? It looks like it gets fatter at the bottom. Maybe a can just change the knob if not happy? I used to like the American audio q5 for its functions and good faders but I didn't like the feel of the the fatter knobs, I don't want to buy the s9 and feel the same, I guess I have to test drive the s9 to see for myself.

I am also holding out buying the s9 as it only has one mic output, I use a radio mic and a corded mic when I play out and need both in at the same time. I am surprised it hasn't got two mic inputs like most of its previous models, even the dim 400 has two mic sockets.

I am also interested to know how well a recorded mix comes out on the s9?

I also want to confirm you can post fade effect on the crossfade?

Does anyone know if you can activate the 3rd and 4th deck in SDJ with this plugged in? Or can you route the internal audio to a channel, such as Ableton?

Any chance of a successor mixer coming this year? I would hate to buy it and then see a better version after just a few months.
