Now I never invested in lights....EVER....
Well, I had 2 police lights, one red and blue...lol, but that's it...
Very SELDOM did any client ever inquire about lights, as they were just interested in my music...
I, however DO want to up my light game, and have a budget of say, 200 or so bucks (not including stands), and truth be told I JUST bought some lighting, but I want to see what other suggestions you cats have before I post what it is....
I may return it...lol
Thanks in advance,
DJ Johnny M

I don't care what anyone tells you trust when I say (after countless intelligent lighting and many other effects) that the Swarm FX is the best money you can spend for the price.
While not being really intelligent in nature it offers three different FX. Not just marketing here if literally offers three different types of output.
1.) Red/Green star-burst/kaleidoscope laser
2.) RGB LED moonflower/derby effect
3.) Bright white LED strobe/blinder/washout effect.
You can select all FX at one time. Two at a time. Even just one at a time.
You can also select specific properties of one color or one behavior. For instance you can have JUST red laser or just green laser. You can have bright white dim on/off or even strobe.
If you want to go with just the RBG LED's you can even choose specific colors to match your theme.
Point being this will work with slow dance, country, techno, house, hip hip............. whatever. fast or slow. subtle or high energy. One of my best lighting purchases ever. To be quite frank it is the only effect under $500 I would recommend to anyone.

I bought two Swarm 5 FX's last week. I was able to use them last night. I was pleasantly surprised. They can easily cover a lot of area.
Bang for the buck, 2 Swarm 5 FX's can't be beat.

I think you should get the second one plus a DMX cable, and then you will be set. You will be able to cover large rooms if need be.

Because I got it at the last minute without consulting with you guys...lol.
I'm notorious for doing my research before a buying venture.... :-)
I didn't know if y'all had something better for the money, or an idea of "nah, don't get one of those, get two of these" or something like that...
They have a 14 return policy, (15% restock fee if I don't buy anything), so I'm just exploring all my options here...

It is a universal bag, but it fits decently, and you don't have to remove the O-clamp for it to go in (which is nice).
See THIS is why I come to y'all, that bag is a great idea.

Not gonna happen....
Yet... you have the lighting bug now ;)
It's just called #adjustingtoyoursurroundings ...
A lot of DJ cats complain about not getting gigs (supposedly) because of Freejays, undercutters, advancement of laptop DJ's, etc... without doing something to enhance their competitive stance.
It has now come to the point where EVERY SINGLE DJ has at LEAST a single light, so I have to at least compete on that level, so that IF they ask the question, I can at least say I have some "lights".

Like I said, I ain't trying to have anybody have seizures out this piece, but I don't want it to come down to "This DJ HAS lights" vs "This DJ DOESN'T have lights"....
The DJ "scene" is much more commercial now, plus again, this is all part of the plan to do more cheesy set up quick, break down fast jawns....

Those lil 700 series foggers can be had for about $30
I'm not having remorse over it, (because I can still return it but incur a restocking fee, (30 bucks?), but I LOVE the idea of having multiple devices for the same price.
I hate all in ones basically, BUT 2 Swarms IS appealing.
Can you imagine the T-Bar with a separate laser, and light effect AND can fit in whatever bag they say? In NO WAY am I a lighting guy, but this package is HELLA attractive...
I need to do some more research....

Oh...ha ha...no haps...
So, I'm at the crossroads of getting that Pack the DJ Techic posted or staying with what I have....
On one hand, I LOVE the idea of having separate components to interchangeably bring, either singularly or in a group...and if one thing breaks, no big deal...vs the entire unit being down...
But that Swarm is NICE....but I'm inclined to think that I'd need 2 to really get a dope effect, in a large room, and WOULD do that if the price was right...
But that package deal also looks like it would fill an entire room...
The question right now is which one would fill the room better?
I'm leaning towards 2 SWARMS....(that way I'd have a backup light in case one goes out).
Decisions, decisions....

oh, I wasn't implying by any means that the average mobile dude have that on their rig - I was just curious as to where the light pecking order is. every major club I've ever done in my career, pretty much any time I looked up it said "Martin" somewhere on the thing. thats about the extent of my knowledge of lights. I've seen some American DJ stuff from other colleagues, and they pretty much treat the stuff like its the "Gemini" brand of the light world

Our clientele which i believe to be very similar (urban, east-coast, tri-state, grown & sexy, oldschool & new-school 30-60 yr old mix) simply are not big on lighting when it comes to paying extra $$$ for it.
My advise, keep it simple so not to add to your setup time. 2 lights connected to your speaker poles and call it a day unless you find clientele ready to spend an extra $400 for basic lighting which requires an additional 15 mins to set up.

My advise, keep it simple so not to add to your setup time. 2 lights connected to your speaker poles and call it a day unless you find clientele ready to spend an extra $400 for basic lighting which requires an additional 15 mins to set up.
agreed…..but did you peep that GigBar?

I swear, you're my brotha from another mother...
This is EXACTLY how I anticipate how I'd use it.
What would you say is the biggest coverage (in terms of room size or amount of people) that 1 would work for?
Do you see an advantage of having 2 and running them in sync?

THIS......Now I did a very upscale event for an upscale client at the last minute last year, NO LIGHTS.
And they called me back for this year....again at an upscale location....
So I wanted to turn it up just a bit with the light, so they know what they can expect from me when given enough time to plan.
This is also the event that I will need the EV's and Subs by, and this would be the PERFECT occasion to use them.
I anticipate purchasing the speakers by 5/22-23, so watch your inbox... :-D
Trust, I'm the last person to shine a light in a party, but again, you have to adjust with the DJ climate vs complaining about it.
EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY has a DJ light nowadays....even if it's just a little tabletop laser.....

And I STILL don't use lights, but I've been saying I'm going to start doing those "Cheesy" events, and we ALL know they REQUIRE lights and quick setup/breakdown times.
This is the DJ "climate" that's messing all this up, cats bringing lights "For Free" or as an "Expected" part of the package have driven it to this point, but on the OTHER hand, lights have gotten MUCH simpler in setup and are able to produce so much for so little, you'd be a fool not to get at least ONE.

I bought this little laser a couple of months ago and it's been totally worth it. I was impressed by how much space such a small laser could cover. Everyone I show it to gives me a positive reaction. It's small, has a remote control included, really covers the room and is only 79.00.

Oh ok sounds good to me, looks like they are cheaper because they are not compliant lasers in regards to American requirements. I like the casa lasers Im gonna get a few I can make a cheap light show and up charge for it. Currently I pay another company to come and do my lights at mobiles and its pricey most customers wont pay for it. This way I can get lighting and up charge like 100-200 bucks instead of 600 up charge I do now.

Joe quick question if you had to build starter mobile DJ light set to include
Uplights
Lasers
Moving head units
what rig would you put together for a budget of lets say $600 max. What type of trussing system would you reccommend that does not look cheesy I do not like the Tripod look for my lights is there any alternative besied box trussing?

thats doesn't even get you a decent pair of moving heads
but a light show on a budget i would certainly get two swarm 5fx's $330 there than 10 of the ebay uplight like $150 there so that leaves you $120 to spend
or better yet get one GigBar $450 & the 10 uplights ….peep the GigBar

for moving heads i would not get anything cheaper than the ADJ Inno Spot LED

Yea lights are expensive that why I rent. Currently I own 4 up lights 1 mini kinta and 1 revo 4. Should have mentioned that already so I want stuff that will compliment. The Revo 4 is still bad ass to me but I know its old.
Would you reccommend those Casa lasers you showed have you demoed them and are they bright?

You order a second fx5, JM?
Man, took the original BACK to GC, was supposed to pay the "Restocking Fee" of 35 bucks, but I guess the guy didn't know to do so, so he credited me back the ENTIRE amount back...
Man look..
I initially paid 219.99 + tax = 235.39.
I heard I could get TWO of those jawns for 330.00 - out the door...
So to get to 2 lights @ GC I would have wound up paying 219.99 x 2 = 439.98 + tax 30.80 = 470.78.
470.78 - 330.00 = 140.78, which is 25 bucks short of buying 3 NEW ONES thru Joee's guy.
Even if I HAD to pay the restocking fee, it would have been 35 + 330.00 = 365.00 which is STILL better than 470.78.
I'm paying 330.00 out the door....for TWO....
That satisfies my "All in one" issue of if one conks out, and allows me to do larger venues if needed....
Win, win...

In most cases yes but with a higher rate of failure and sometime no support or recourse.
But some are reputable, it just take research to verify them and this is the accepted cost of paying 1/3 the authentic price.

The Swarm 5 fx is cool but it is not spread out like the mini kinta nor does it have the coverage the mini kinta has. But whatever...I actually think it's quite an ugly light and not only that just about "every" mobile Dj has the swarm 5 fx so sure go ahead and get it you won't be standing out though👏🏻

11:49 PM - 28 April, 2015
I bought a couple of Swarm 5 FX about a year ago, and I can tell you it's better to own 2 because they don't have a very wide coverage, only a pretty good vertical coverage. I use dmx sticks to use them as master-slave and they work fantastic in pairs, beautiful patterns.
That's pretty much all you need, I also own a LED bar that I place underneath the table covered by a scrim king.
I recently purchased an ADJ Dotz bar 1.4 because I had a couple of gigs where the place was very very dark (outdoors) and the lights were not providing a lot of brightness, but I understand that's not the purpose of the Swarm 5 FX, their purpose is more like to "decorate" and they do the job quite well.
I use the Dotz Bar either to light the wall behind me or if the dancefloor needs some washing. That's all the lightning I use and I'm not planning on upgrading anytime soon. Everything is very quick to setup.

Still the Swarm 5Fx not that appealing to me. Just looks like a bunch of lasers and small dots on the floor. The only thing I will give it is the 3d effect it gives off other than that the mini kinta is my choice for a wide coverage mobile/club light. Two of them connected and you got some awesome coverage👍🏻 I already have 2 Chauvet min laserz so they swarm 5 fx wouldn't benefit me.

Different fixtures, different applications, different effects, different venues... I like variety.
I also like to keep it fresh at my reoccurring gigs... therefore, my lighting quest and updates never end.
This makes sense, but you have to remember how many mobile DJ's only want to limit themselves to as very few lights as possible.

FYI:
Monoprice has what look to be Blizzard Flurry knockoffs, at $179 per. I had a pair of Blizzards, they won't knock your socks off, but for a all amount of $, it's a "wow cool" effects.
Mini Kintas have a nice bit of coverage, I also agree better coverage than Swarm, but 2 swarms "might" be better.

Honestly the Kinta's go against everything I feel about lighting. YES I was into the derby effect but that was when I was 14 and purchased my first light....................... a double derby. Since then I am more about club style lighting. I do agree the Kinta is more widespread but then again so is a mirror ball/pinspot.
Lastly if I picked my lights based on price I could see your point. I do not though. I purchase my lights like I purchase my cars. Based on performance, reliability, function and somewhere in the rear, price.
To each their own. Bottom line though the Swarm 5FX does more.
We all agree that the ONLY thing the Kinta does is multi colored LED's correct?

No that is not all it does it has a strobe effect for each individual color beam for me it is more intelligent than the swarm 5 fx. Simplicity is better. The swarm 5 fx is overkill. Too much going on in 1 light the actual effect just gets lost👎🏻

i have to agree and I think that's a better idea. If you get a swarm 5 fx you won't be satisfied for long with it. The effect it gives is just rather boring they are too small of beams to even look cool. At the price of the swarm 5 fx it is not worth it. You could get two derby's or kinta's and have the same effect as the gigbar all you need is the washers. The kinta's already have a built in strobe effect. You will be saving a lot of money. Just sayin

You realize most of us have already had the Kinta (derby) effect at one point in our lives being the derby effect is over 20 years old which is directly why I have such praise for the Swarm.
Again I prefer intelligent lighting but if I HAD to suggest a cheap light it would be the Swarm.
I also find it interesting you are fighting for it so much yet you don't even own it yet. Sounds like your "Numark NV shits all over the .............." all over it again.

Why two? Because one swarm isn't good enough? Not bright enough? Not wide enough. You're damn right👍🏻

Our clientele which i believe to be very similar (urban, east-coast, tri-state, grown & sexy, oldschool & new-school 30-60 yr old mix) simply are not big on lighting when it comes to paying extra $$$ for it.
So this is Joee's fault....

You know what I dislike about most of these Youtube videos you guys put the links up to? The video camera is looking at the light directly facing it. I don't wanna see what it looks like from that perspective because it doesn't show me anything. I wanna see videos of what the lighting effect looks like from the perspective of the dj booth looking out, so I can see the fill of the light, the coverage, the effect, etc. Doesn't do me any good looking at a bunch of colored rays.

I get what you mean, unfortunately most demo vids are done buy users in their living room and not a large venue were theres room to see the effects and coverage on walls ,ceilings and floors.

Ya, clients seem to like these fixtures, I always get compliments on them. I once had a DJ see them through the window of one of my bar gigs as he was driving by... he stopped and came in to ask me about them, lol.
I also really like that "pole pass-thru" on the bar as well. I wish more fixtures had that option.

I think these will be great for the fast effective setup.

Reading this thread, I went out to GC and bought a Swarm and used it at a wedding gig last night (no fog - not allowed at venue). The effect was.......Meh. Not because of its design, but because the venue was not dark enough for all the lasers and the color dots to really stand out. I had asked the staff to turn down the lights but at the dimmest settings allowed, the room still wasn't dark enough.
When I tested the light at home after I bought it, of course I tried it in a pitch dark room in the house so my reaction was "oh wow this light is pretty neat for $220!"
At the wedding, I did have a pair of gobo moving heads to complement the Swarm so at least there were some other effects going on. So for those of you looking to buy the Swarm, keep in mind about the whole venue lighting and degree of darkness factor.

what are those two speaker stands to mount the swarm?
or are the for your speakers? since you want this to be a simple setup, you can mount the swarm to the speaker stand with a o clamp right under the speaker
or since your getting zxa5, you can actually mount the light to the top of the of the speaker from one of the zxa5 rigging points

I spent ANOTHER 10g's on a NEW FURNANCE at the start of November, right BEFORE the Sweet Sixteen...
I spent 2G's on a MAC
Another 3G's on downpayment of a NEW car and 2 G's to fix up my old one to sell...
A few hundred bucks on some lights, and now 5G's on some speakers...
