"You're A Jerk" is bubbling up here in Northern Cali. Did well over the wknd. "Blame It" still has a strong following, too. Yes, it's getting old, but Joe/Jane Public generally lags. "If U Seek Amy" will def be a summer hit. I think "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga will maintain momentum thru summer, as well. And I'm still playing "Big Girl Now" by New Kids OTB/Gaga. I am def confident in my masculinity.

I like "Shoes" by Tiga. And "Girls On The Dancefloor" by Far East Movement has been a consistent banger at my venues, even though I haven't heard it on the radio. This can be a good thing - no radio means no oversaturation, which generally translates into longer life.

When I first heard it I thought "this is weird and shit" and just dismissed it without a second thought. I'm having a look now though and there seems to be a few remixes that I like better. Not a fan of the original at all but if somebody comes along and makes a GREAT remix of it will probably do really well, it has a kind of weirdness that scenesters will really like.

It's more about your crowd than what/how you play.

With a lot of crowds, it's really no possible way to play any Doom tracks....and with some crowds, it's even hard to play a Jay or Snoop track. It just all depends on who you are dealin with...people's taste in music is as different as they look, LOL.

I do feel that a lot of DJ's play the same songs, and it gets old...but to me, it's always about the crowd and what they let you do, and I see a lot of DJ's never agree. I have some crowds where I can play anything, new old or unreleased, and they'll dance...while some ONLY want old songs, while some ONLY want new, while some ONLY want South, etc. etc...so it all depends.

What type of club do you spin at?

The usual..the Hip-Hop/RnB clubs..but nowadays my hometown clubs are playing real cheesy RnB and I aint touching that with a bargepole but I still do a lot of party's and during the summer there will be the carnivals, house partys, BBQ's etc where you can really let loose.

I actually only like the chorus of the room service track. The verses need to go. The verses just don't sound like they go with the chorus.

I think it's a good transition song into or out of house.

I feel like mixed clubs always require faster BPM songs because that = more energy...but a LOT of the major black songs tend to be slower in BPM...such as "Geeked up" "Hood figga" all of Drake's songs, and even when it was "Whatever you like" "Can't believe it" "So fly" "The boss" last year. Most of my crowds are usually 90% black, and they don't like much that's past 110 BPM here in L.A...but Florida was a lot different, where they love a lot of local 115-130 BPM songs, new and old.

Yeah, everybody here is in a different city/region, so it's good to be able to see what songs are workin in other regions before it hits yours...it's always a million songs available in DJ pools and record stores, but it's hard to know which ones are gonona hit.

Good point, really depends on the crowd. I have about 15% black 20% asian 10% Indian/persian 10% Mexican and the rest white. Those songs you mentioned work ok, ones I was thinking of is: Wayne/Game - My Life, Kid Cudi - Day n Nite (oG version), Paper Planes, Swagger like us, dead and gone....

I don't get that at all. I had a black crowd the end of the night last week and I'm like.. wtf do I play? No offense intended but the black crowds I've played for are just as bad with their radio "hits" (so long as they are brand spanking new) as asian chicks are with *demanding* Britney songs. Just my observations as a dj.

I'm not even talkin about Radio hits or "sheep," but just that a lot of songs that Blacks see as "party songs" and dance to tend to be a lot slower than the Pop hits, which are usually 120 BPM or at least 105 most of the time, especially in this decade.

And as a black person and DJ, I know for fact that we're the hardest ones to please. We don't care if we're 15-20% of the club...we want to hear like 98% Black music all night, LOL...so I always feel sympathy for mixed club DJ's.

It was summed up to me the best one night when i was in the middle of a dance set, off night not many people in the club and there was one black dude tryna grind on a girl at like 140 BPM, dude stops walks to the booth and goes (and i give this dude MAD CREDIT because he was hella respectful and KNEW how to talk to a DJ) he goes man you playin GREAT music, these are some AWSOME remixs and i bet you made em yourself...your pretty tight where you from....uh huh...cool man well check it out as tight as these tracks are down here in the south we like to ...layyy.....baack...chillll.....and rollll niiicee annd slooooowwwwwwwww, its relaxed down heres so take it down a notch. HAHAHA dude was too cool i went ahead and played some wayne and gucci ect for him.....mabye its cause its really hot and humid down here that people dont like to move around alot i dont know

I appreciate your honesty and candor on the subject. I don't get much say here as a white guy, but have I found it obnoxious at times that the floor clears of black folks the second I drop a song that is not by a black artist. I don't know what to call that exactly. My second favorite phenomenon is when I drop in some older older tracks that everyone BUT the black folks in the room go nuts for. I played S&P - Shoop early on (maybe 10:30 pm) the other night to a fairly thin crowd.. just wasting time waiting for people to show up. Most of the girls in the room screamed.. all the black people stopped dancing like I shot them in the leg with a "stop-dancing dart," and I got a few "hands-on the hips.. what the fuck are you doing?" stares. That isn't the first time that's happened, but the way I figure it, if you can't let loose and have fun, get out.. I don't need your attitude. If it's not that it's.. "why aren't you playing reggae" --- and the answer is quite simple. I really don't like rocking slow music at peak hours. This has always been a major dilemma for me as I've jumped through hoops trying to make EVERYONE happy, but it seldom works out the way I want it to. Any advice you have, I'd be more then happy to try, as it's become a major disappointment every time I try to switch up the music a little. No one wants to see 40 or 50 people walking off the dance floor (while everyone else is still dancing)

I mean it really is just a big difference in every culture. The Miami, Chicago, B-More house crowds prefer faster music, while ATL and Houston like it slower, while L.A, NY prefer it at a medium type speed. Some people in the South are more on that vibe...but even with Crunk music, the BPM was slow, but the beats had hella energy.

@ Frost - I see why you don't like certain Ne Yo tunes. Shoop is a good song but not a warm up/early doors type song. I play the world of slow tunes at my clubs, old and new and a lot of it is in the timing. Not saying you don't have timing but I wouldn't think of dropping shoop till like the mid to the last part of the night at a black crowd type club.

@ R-Tistic - I agree to the most part. In the UK alot of black kids are into this funky house rubbish or UK funky or whatever they're calling it. And before that it was Garage and then Jungle Music and before that lol I was too young to club. But those genres aside you can get away with playing alot slower music in a black club.

And the other thing I've noticed when I'm playing a white club I play a lot of slow songs and after one or two I get the usual can you speed it up now please comment.

Since I've been DJ'n, I can definitely understand what y'all go through. Before I DJ'd, I would never call a DJ wack who played Pop/House/Electro, because I always knew it was about catering to the crowd, even though I may not have liked it. But I can see how hard it is, because people really only respond to what they are familiar with and enjoy hearing.

It's really a whole different topic, but with a lot of us, we just don't care as much for anything on that side...and even some commercial or older Rap won't go over as good for us...but it still depends on region and the crowd you have. The suburban blacks and those who go to mixed schools tend to be a bit more open to hearing Pop/Rock/Electro and all else, just depending on their crowd...but that's usually the ones who'll be at the club with friends of other races.

I hate having to do mixed events, especially in L.A., because everyone out here gets along, but they like COMPLETELY different music. Whenever I do a crowd that's a majority black, I'm gonna play 100% music that caters to them...but if it's 10-25% black, I have to mix it up, and I know it can be hard unless it's just a diff. kind of crowd. It's really nothing else to "blame" aside from the fact that we just grow up on a completely different type of sound, and enjoy different types of music for diff. occasions.

I'm definitely not the spokesman for everyone black, LOL, but I've been to enough regions and diff. types of places to have a good idea about how things operate.

Ummmm.. All of the joints I go to in LA have a mix of people and everybody dances to everything. Although top 40 is the most popular.

I don't think I've ever seen blacks completely "clear the floor" here unless it was something way off base, but as I said, it depends on the type of crowd you have. The ones who are used to mixed clubs and kick it with everybody will dance to everything more than the ones who are used to going to strictly Hip Hop clubs. Whenever the Electro and spaced out music comes on, they usually shake or sit down...but soon as "their song" comes on, they run back.

Have to agree there too.. there are guys that stick it out, which you have to appreciate. +1000 regarding the bit about when "their song" comes on. I think that applies to all races. I absolutely loathe top 40 floor fillers like Live Your Live and Whatever You Like, because they're generic cookie-cutter tracks. The lyrics and beats are entirely forgettable, yet for some reason, everyone loses bowel control and hot-foots it to the dance floor. Just something that goes with the job I guess.

I spin twice a month at my club ( with the economy club only does only do Fri. and Sat. nights now ). Its a military town and all different kinds of people. Never know what the crowds gonna look like when I spin. Some nights I can play anything and others if I dip below 115 bpm forget about it.

For me, I can say that I'm DEFINITELY a lot better with Black crowds, but I realize that when it's a good mixture in one club, the Blacks may end up being the hardest to please. 98% of every event I've ever done was probably 90% Black, and that's what I am, so it's definitely easy. I just feel that when you are going through genres, it's nearly impossible to please all of us in most cases.

I personally have trouble with some mixed crowds, because I only know the surface songs for Pop/Rock, and never go into Electro or anything on that side. If I ever get a mixed crowd that doesn't like ANY Hip Hop, I'm fucked, LOL

Why do you show so much dislike for mostly urban "Black" music? The are so many Genres of music in the world today and I have done gigs that required me to play Pop, Rock, Latino, Reggae, R & B, Old School NEW YORK Hip Hop, and what YOU consider wack-Rap from the South. Sometimes all at the same event. I have been DJ'ing since the late 80's and the one thing I do know and couple of others here have dinged you on is being one dimentional. You would not play Soulja Boy...Why? As a DJ, you need to know what to play for the crowd you are playing for. My city is 75% Black. The music that most people here listen too happens to be a lot of music from the south or "Baltimore Club" (DJ Class-I'm the Ish"). I only made my previous remarks to you because of your response to my song post. Where I live, these are the songs that work. So if I was from DC and listed 5 Go-Go songs would you down them too? You cannot do a party in DC for the most part without playing Go-Go. The West Coast has their flava as well as other parts of the country. I think your ignorance for the love of music is very obvious. Maybe you are new to the game, but in the end you need to appreciate all different types of music and LEARN how to keep your dance floor packed! Music changes and evolves everyday. I wish I could spin Blackmoon, Tribe, Biggie, and Nas all day, but those days are over! If you don't undestand or want to understand other people's taste in music, that's your choice, but in this game you won't get far. I will be the first one to give you a couple of ideas on how to please the "Black" crowd, but being ignorant about it will get you nowhere! I thought that was the whole idea for this thread? 90-115 BPM Dancehall Reggae tracks can be a transition during your peak time. Try Serani-No Games, Mavado-So Special, Rihanna-Pon de Replay, Lumidee-Uh Oh Inst/ with Single Ladies acapella or Get Me Bodied Acapella, Pitbull and Ying Yang-Shake, Elephant Man-Father Elephant. Something along those lines. It is no better feeling in the world of DJ'ing than making all kinds of music work together!!!

OK. As a DJ, I've set certain standards that I play by. I honest to God will simply refuse to play music like soulja boy, because I feel it's my responsibility to play what I perceive to be good music, and not trash. I think soulja boy is 100% payola trash. In another thread someone talked about how the rap from the south was music dumbed down to borderline mental retardation status, yet he still liked it. THAT IS FINE, but it's not me. If I wanted to be a mobile dj and dress in a clown suit, and play every top 40 track getting canned, I would, but that's not what I signed up for, so please, respect my right to have my own opinion.

To re-post this topic's original question: What club songs will run this 2009 summer?

I'm betting those Paradiso Girls and their "Patron Tequila" track will get a lot of hype, it's already been remixed a few times and mashed up on CC with tracks like "I'm the Ish" (another big club hit for this summer). "Boom Boom Pow" will continue to thrive, especially the David Guetta version, great beat. As far as Lady GaGa, I think "Poker Face" is starting to fade out, her new track "Love Game" is a little too slow for me, so I tend to play the LMFAO version more often than the original. "You're A Jerk" is alright for the right kind of crowd, "Girls on the Dancefloor" will definitely pick up, and "When Love Takes Over" is a great upbeat positive track for the clubs.

I'm sure there will be more coming out in the next couple of weeks, if I hear anything else that could be a big hit for this summer I'll post it up.

I am not a sweet 16 DJ, my little cousin handles those! I just had a 65th B-day party last night that paid 1K. I played everything from Hand dance music to Mavado ;-) I DJ for the love of it, and I appreciate all music. I do not like SB 1 bit, but if somebody has a hit and if it keeps the floor packed then I'm playing it. Remember Vanilla ICE? You were probably still in elementary school then. As a DJ your JOB is to please the crowd, not yourself. You have to be able to determine which songs are hot and work for your event regardless if you like it personally or not. You said that you hate requests for latin music? This country is almost Mexico! Try some Marc Anthony or any kind of Salsa if you ever get out of the bar circuit and get some corporate events($1500/gig). You have the game all wrong. So maybe you should quit. It's guys like you that are killing the game. Could you even blend songs out of the 100-120 BPPM range or just vinyl with no help from a pc? We'd all like to be able to DJ places where we only play what we like, but for more than a few of us I'm sure this isn't the case. If you're fortunate enough to make a living out of it then good for you, but have respect for those that aren't as lucky and have to play a wide range of music.

All of us are entertainers, and we're there to entertain the crowd. There's people out there that need have less sophisticated musical tastes than our own, and some of us are paid to indulge them. It's not something to hate, it pays the bills!

Personally, I enjoy my gigs. None of them are ego wanks, they're playing mostly chart music crowd pleasers, but I take joy out of mixing as best as I can cross genre, and live off the atmosphere I create, just like you.

^^ a little bit of everything.. I think the main difference between our tastes in music is BPM related.. I literally cannot stand most things under 90 bpm.. (even 90 is kinda slow) If it's a track that is getting a ton of radio play, that you pretty much have to play, I'm in and out of the lower ranges.. I feel like I'm in slow motion when I'm listening to that stuff, as if the artist is intentionally trying to put me to sleep. Typically I'll start a night with the R&B stuff, and work my way up, then back down and do it all over, but I just can't imagine peak hour at 74 bpm.. Not my idea of a good time.

It all depends on the crowd. For a lot of my crowds, some main songs are in that 75-85, whether brand new or a few yrs old...such as Turn my swag on (oh damn), Ain't I, Stanky legg, Turnin me on, Rockin that thang (very mellow but works for my shit in the peak), n then those like Snap ya fingers, Wipe me down, etc. etc.... It just all depends on who you deal with. Mixed clubs always go for hi BPM from what I see, while most of the ones I've done don't care for much past 105, 110+ since L.A. is diff.

I think Mavado was a mix of a fresh voice, right time right place and stuff. He was rolling with The Alliance and then that beef started with him and Kartel, he is depending on how you view violent lyrics a talented lyricist etc etc.

But yeah as for the UK they love fast music over here. From Punk, Jungle, DNB, Hardcore, Garage to Funky House etc.

But like R-Tistic said there tends to be or used to be different types of venues and nights and I spent most of them going to the slower BPM places like the Westwood Dances and Goldfinger dances. The few where they played faster stuff I'd be trying to get girls numbers or waiting around till they played something slower lol.

The radio version has a bubble gum feel about it to me (like most of Guetta's stuff) but it allows me to mix in some other higher tempo music for a little so I do the best i can with it.

Gonna try the "Abel Ramos Paris With Love" mix this weekend. I like that version more but I don't think the general "Radio" crowd will appreciate it.

Love the fact there are heaps of huge gigs over here in the summer months, mean you can sometimes get away with playing old classics by whatever bands are apppearing (for example Killing in the Name last year). Makes a nice change.

That's actually a very good question. I think it has a lot to do with the "instant gratification" that Generation Y'ers have become so accustomed to. I think they're probably the easiest generation market crap to than any preceding generation. I never really understood the appeal of following trends, but the sad reality of it is, the majority of people on this planet absolutely love to "fit in" and follow whatever is popular. Therein lies the extremely damaging effect of things like 'payola' -- people are literally so stupid that they will find anything Funk "Payola" Flex drops.. It would be fine if the songs being played were based on how good they are musically, and not how much some jack-off paid to have his song played.

I think some people like Drake because they think it makes them appear "in the know." The reality of the situation is that Drake is a nobody.. he gave someone enough head to have his record played, which makes the masses lose bowel control for a short period of time, but when it all comes down to it, he and his music are entirely forgettable. It's a lost cause on here, with these elitist DJ's....they will swear to you that it's 100% on the DJ, and that you can play anything you want, different genres and new songs, and that it "SHOULD" work...and if not, then you aren't a good or experienced DJ....I just ignore it all.

Some crowds really won't let you get away with new music, especially at the peak of the night, when they want to recite every single word. At the same time, only a FEW songs are dope enough and have an energy to where you can play them at peak time even though nobody's ever heard it before...there are some songs that have had that reaction from time to time, but not as many at all.

I think that Chenney "I took The Night" is gonna take off.

I was thinking about this the other day on the way to a gig. I think it's near on impossible to predict what song will be a hit. I mean I can pick what should be a hit and what will probably be a hit but then it all boils down to what's been pushed to the masses.

I remember when Nore's Nothin came out. The rumor was Def Jam weren't going to release the song as a single in the UK because they didn't think it would work. They had to film the song being played in various clubs to show that it was a hit.

You've had certified hits such as Miss Independent, Live Your Life even Boom Boom Pow that have had crowds looking at me like I've lost my mind and don't know what I'm doing when I played them early in their shelf life to being some of the biggest ''you have to play this now songs'' because of the marketing they received.

I like to think that when I put that song on the turntable that I've been playing to evil stares for the past few months hits and everyone cheers it's down to my dilligence and perseverence, but I know deep down it's because MTV have just picked it up and Radio 1 have started to play it that, that's why the crowd are reacting the way they do.

I'm the same these days. I try and check myself and stop myself being lazy but I find myself sometimes waiting till a song actually hits before even bothering to get it. I think this is a digital issue as well. In vinyl days you had to be quick to get exclusives and new stuff but these days I can just hit up iTunes the same night of a gig if I get enough requests.

I have had it for a while... only got to use it once and it worked.

My GF and her friends come out BITCHING saying i was playing shitty music and i need to play something good, i got pretty pissed because I know what they want, they wanna hear top 40 crap thats well passed its prime (hand clap lollipop swagger on kiss me thru the phone ect ect bla bla bla) So im like fuck that those tracks will be on in the car at the club on your ringtones im not gonna waste my time playing them when i have some new hotness here thats fresh just give these tracks a chance cause i know youve never heard em but theyll be huge, which led to a big fight. We get to the club and grab a few drinks and my boy is spinning and starts dropping the same tracks i was playing (because i put him onto them)....i watched shots DIE which confused the shit outta me i mean how do people not get that song especially when before he played it he announced a shot special, then he played about 6 tracks that i had played at the house that my GF and her friends bitched about being garbage and they have the nerve to run up and go see you need to play stuff like this....IT WAS THE SAME DAMN SONGSS!!!!!....came 1 step away from breakin out the baby powder and show em who beenpimpinsincebeenpimpinsincebeenpimpin

Lol I had the exact same thing at my missus birthday party last year. I was close to telling her to go fuck herself on the mic but refrained lol. That night I dj'd for free, helped with the door, brought her presents, helped with the flyers, took pictures etc etc and got moaned at. Lol.

This happened to me when i went away on a ski trip with about 20 people. We stayed at this pimp mansion... ski on ski off.... I was asked to bring my DJ equipment. Last minute I decided just to bring speakers and let my laptop be the DJ. Can't a guy get a break??? I threw some playlists together and let them go.

The girl who ran the house started complaining... (cause she did not know the music) til another girl seriously got in her face and said "Fuck you!!! these are all the new songs and I like them... don't touch anything!!" Kidding... but in a serious way...

I chuckled to myself because pop music does not mean anything to me personally.. these girls were fighting like i used to with other friends over electronic music... lol...

It's weird...I kinda feel like that, because there were times that I'd stay online and try my hardest to find the "newest" songs...gettin every album that dropped, goin thru thousands of songs to find the 5 that "MIGHT" work...but then I realized that if you play songs before they blow up, they might not even work...most major songs never work before people hear em unless they just have a great club energy to them.

However...thing is, you never know what everyone else has heard yet, and as DJ's, we usually don't go to other clubs if it ain't our people DJ'n....so people will ask you for songs that you may have and have never heard...or for songs that you have, but woulda never thought about playin, and you might throw it on, and it's like "damn, for real??? This is workin great!!!"

LMAO...me and my "female best friend" a.k.a. "we'll probably be together in five years but we would never work now" always clash on this tip.

She hates 90% of the music that I play when we drive around, or if I'm doin a party and it's hella early...but whenever people come and I'm DJ'n for them, I'll play whatever it is...old school, super new, radio, etc. etc. and whenever the crowd loves it, she has that look like "that's my boy!!!" But in the car, she's ALWAYS like "what the hell are you playin??"

As I'm sure we've all learned, you will never please 100% of a crowd, anywhere. When it comes to playing new music, especially if it hasn't hit Top 40 radio stations yet, there will always be someone coming up to the booth or table asking "What the hell is this?" because they just don't know it yet. I try to play a majority of tracks that are new but familiar to the crowd, while throwing in one or two very new tracks they probably haven't heard yet, just to give them a taste of it. Then when they hear it on the radio a week or two later, they can say "Hey, that DJ at that club played this song!"

I can definitely see that LMFAO - Shots track being used to announce shots specials, maybe a special where while that song is playing the bar can do $1 shots. It's just one of those songs that can get a crowd excited and jumpin'.

A few newer songs get good response, such as "Ice cream paint job" and even "Superman high"...but most songs gettin response now have been out for 3-4+ months.

@ Bigga you play alot of dancehall from memory. Is that Sean Paul tune big where you are? I've not played a dance in a while but I've been getting a mediocre response from it. The Felli Fell tune with Sean Paul, Flo Rida etc is doing much better here. Although granted it's a bit older.

It's taken absolutely ages to hit here but Souljah Boy - Kiss Me Thru the Phone is hot here right now. I didn't mind this song November last year but now it's starting to grate a little.

yeah the SP joint is fire right now, I don't think it will take long for the top 40 community to catch on to it as it's getting a lot of push from the mainstream radio stations right now. The riddims mentiond are doin pretty good agound here as well, Good Life riddim in still big, sixteen is a little to tuff for my taste as I try to cater to the girls more than the fellas (When tune come in with vado and Kartel ALL OF A SUDDEN every one is a fuckin badman, and they start gettin stupid in the dance) . Mood Swing is just catching on now.

Don't recognise those other riddims. The one I like at the moment and it works well at my commerical place more is the Disturbia Riddim. I'm pretty sure because it's similar in vibe to the Fiesta riddim and Beenie has that voice that works well for the commerical crowd like Sean as well.

I've been getting lots of requests for Tami Chynn on the Guardian Riddim all of a sudden. Personally I thought it was one of the weaker songs on the riddim but loads of places I'm getting requests for it.

A personal fave of mine is the Assasin and Chris Martin tune She Asking When on the Gold Mine Riddim. I can see it doing well if it had a video to push it. I played it to a few people and it's one of the ones that people seem to like when they sit and listen to the lyrics.
