We have all seen these.
If it wasn't bad enough that the days of having an original idea is bad enough, we are starting to see the unoriginal "BAD DJ REBUTLES"
As if they came on a list with their pirate bay account #.

I've heard some very compelling, original well thought out reasons for why a dj might do something off the mark, ie no headphones, no monitor, live on his mic.

But here are a few of the classics I have seen out of droves of new DJs when they are being asked/called-out or just discussing the game.

*it doesen't matter as long as the crowds happy

*song selection, and how many people I bring make me one of the best DJs

*it gives me time to do more things

*people can't tell the difference between ___ & ____ kbs

*If I don't do some gigs for free no one will ever see how good I am

*control vinyl IS a controller

*well, i can't hate on their hustle

* I've spun at _______ (and therefor all my unethical shit is void)

I find a lot of bad DJ's don't even know they are bad. Somehow they can't tell when their mixes are trainwrecks. I even had one newbie show up to my residency and criticize a DJ friend of mine that is pretty spectacular on mix and cuts by saying "yeah he's using the sync button". I was like, ScratchLive has no sync button and/or 3 click flare button ether.

Use the headphones. I play in all kinds of rooms and NEVER use a monitor. I don't like them. I just use the headphones and keep the cue in the middle.

Had a dude a few weeks ago come up and tell me he was a DJ in front of his girlfriend. He seemed to know all about Serato, control vinyl, and the tone signals and the like, but when I asked him if he wanted to spin for a second, he told me that he only uses CDJs. :)

these needles don't track well.. These CV's aren't performance edition, not feeling them at all.. The decks are too hi/lo.. Your faders are a little tight.... all excuses bad djs make. granted, we all like our shit setup a certain way but if you're getting on the decks that another dj is putting in work on, you should be able to do the same. no excuses.

I've seem bum DJ's somehow get a lot of people to come out to events and the bar doesn't care about the music if they make money. I'm not saying it's right I'm saying I've seen it happen.

The fact that some people who are not even DJs can a lot of friend via social media that will come out and check them out even if the Dj'ing is ass. I'm not saying it's right I'm saying I've seen it before.

This all goes back to the bottle service dilemma and headliner DJs getting thrown off the stage as consequence of not catering to that crowd. As a club/bar owner it will always be about bar sales. Thats just good business for them and I cant knock it. Most DJs learn to work those nights and still do their thing elsewhere. That really has nothing to do with having and inferior skill set or does it?

I believe at least every "DJ" should be able to pull off a few faderless babies at least on time with the music. What happened to then days when you introduced yourself as a Dj, the first thing people would ask you is if you can scratch?

I've seen alot of "Dj's" establish themselves as strictly House/trance/tribal because they dint wanna put in the time to learn how to scratch decently. Not that everyone has to be Qbert or Mixmaster Mike or anything but... anway, Add that to the fact that most controllers coming out are having smaller and smaller size jogwheels lol.

I guess that's legit. He wasn't being obnoxious about it, but did seem to shy away rather quickly when given the opportunity to spin a few after boasting his vast "Serato knowledge".

True story: walk into a bar and the dj recognizes me and call me on the mic to spin a few. There was alota nice chicks so I say hell yea. Get to the dj booth and theres NO turntables, cdj's or controller.....Dude is just running straight internal.....so I'm like....wtf.

Eh, was booked to do this smedium spot... Visited the spot earlier in the week, they had CDJ's, and said it was OK that I bring TT's.

Owner is like, - Nah, you ain't disconnecting *ish.... Use the CDJ's.

I had NEVER played party before on CDJ's.

They were Pioneers, and by the GRACE OF GAWD, I had the 2 UNOPENED CD Control disks in the pocket of the laptop.

Took a quick getting used to, (just remember to always restart the control tone for new cuts, and don't accidently touch the jogwheel unless you mean it), but was able to rip it.

Take it from me, you WILL one day have to DJ on CDJ's....Just learn the basics of them, and then you'll be good...

as much as im not a fan (not cause I think they are complete shit.... they just arent my thing)

been there a few times... fortunate the format was all dance, so I did enjoy the rock solid control tone.... but i ran that shit in cdj mode all night....lol.

I actually have a pair of denon dn 3500s at home and Im pretty comfortable on those.
not to derail the thread, but I think if denon had pushed harder we might have seen alot of turntable guys goto a moving platter if forced to a cd purchase and saw those more often than CDJs.... but pioneer is like walmart....

Love my 3500's. They are not dependable anymore though. The rails don't always travel correctly and won't load the disk. It finally made me retire them to my son's bedroom so he can play around on them.
One of them used to just stop working and go all flaky. Happened a few times during gigs. I got real good at going the instant doubles route quickly. Even with that, when I would hear " you gotta let those things go ", is be like " nah, these babies have some more life in them".
They are too expensive to fix, and not worth any monetary value, but I just can't part with them. They were my first "real" set of CDJ's.
I bought them used from the Long & Mquade rental stock. It was all I could afford at the time, those things served me well.

I hear ya'll. I had to do a rave in Chicago once on CDJs a while back. No prep time - just had to jump on after the first DJ. Man, what a sweat fest! I was nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs... but I got the hang of it pretty quick. I guess maybe the guy was recognizing his limitations and smart enough NOT to make a fool of himself. I threw this scenario in because it can easily be taken as a quick cop-out for what the thread implies - inferior skills!

Good arguments all the way around though. Fresh perspectives. :)
