songs for a prom, specifically slow dances

DJDBAG 12:41 AM - 19 April, 2013
so I am booked for a prom coming up

I am totally confident in the mainstream top 40 stuff I will play

my problem is with slow dances, how many do you guys play and what kinda stuff?

ive been using jason mraz, some dave matthews, jack johnson, etc but i feel like those are all a little older now

I usually will play 1 slow song every hour, sometimes two if the nerdy kids ask me too (i am trying to help these kids get their groove on lol)

any advice is appreciated
DJ Reflex 3:30 AM - 19 April, 2013
Hah, if you get some advice, let me know. Slow songs are the worst! Either a huge hit or a big bust.

Here's a few of my favorites for H.S. dances:

A Thousand Years - Christina Perri
Don't Matter - Akon
You and Me - Lifehouse
Adorn - Miguel
Only Exception - Paramore
Collide - Howie Day
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

A lot of these ARE a bit older, but still good and usually work. Everyone loves the new dance hits, but new slow songs take a while to catch on, unless it's a good breakup song. Everyone likes a new Pink or Ke$ha song, but a slow one by those artists just doesn't have the appeal that the upbeat ones have.

I had an urban prom this past weekend.

Slow song that killed: "Computer Love" - Zapp! (this song is waaay before their time but it has that Autotune effect so they love it)

Newer slow song that killed: "Bad" - Wale (play clean version)

LoL! Okay, have it your way. I knew the group name both ways but it's easier to just say Zapp. When I think of the group, I just think of the album covers: ecx.images-amazon.com

No "Roger" listed any where on there. :-)

Tracking. Slow songs are my weakness

Typically, I play songs like Wonderful Tonight, Back at One, Don't Wanna Miss a Thing... I've been wondering if these are too old also. But they are classics and still work

Don't wanna miss a thing still goes over well, but I usually refuse to play it, because I just cannot stand it.

Don't forget K-Ci and JoJo, and you can probably swing that Stay song from Rihanna
Discobee 8:59 PM - 23 April, 2013
Usher & Alicia Keys - My Boo
Usher & Monica - Slow Jam
Usher - Love In The Club

pretty much Usher...
DJRemixEnt 9:33 PM - 23 April, 2013

Me too.

Angel of Mine by Monica seems to still be a good one. Saw some middle school kids singing along a few weeks ago.

Doing a prom with video tomorrow night and struggling for some slow songs. I'm sure I'll squeak by, though. Here's what I was thinking (more than I'll probably need just in case):

Bruno Mars -- When I Was Your Man
Hunter Hayes -- Wanted
Pink -- Just Give Me A Reason
Rihanna -- Stay
Ed Sheeran -- A-Team
Fun. -- Carry On
Colbie Caillat feat. Gavin DeGraw -- We Both Know
Keith Harkin -- Nothing But You & I
Jason Mraz -- The Woman I Love
Christina Perri -- A Thousand Years

There might be more somewhere in the back of my brain, but that's what I had lined up so far. They claim they want 25% slow and 75% dance-friendly, but we'll see. I think more than 1 or 2 an hour is too many and I'm only rocking 4 hours.

Any other thoughts? Trying to keep it contemporary even though I'm personally definitely a fan of the K-Ci & JoJo and all the 90's/early 2000 bangers.
Shorty 4:31 AM - 18 May, 2013
Oh yeah and don't forget ...

Frank Ocean -- Thinkin About You
DJ Reflex 5:01 AM - 18 May, 2013
Adourn seemed to go over pretty well. So did A Thousand Years (good pick)

I'd stay away from the Bruno Mars one - it's a break up song. Like you said, you'll probably only be playing 4, maybe 5 slow songs anyways. There's some great suggestions above in this thread. I used a few for a prom I did a few weeks ago. Good luck to ya.
ral 3:33 PM - 21 May, 2013

I've probably posted this 100 times, but www.schooldancenetwork.com is a great resource for proms and such. Check out their monthly playlists.
