i was gonna get the TTM57 mix and i was gonna put down $1500 and i saw this Staton DaScratch.. www.enterthesystem.com which is only $299
the reason why i wanted to get the TTM57 is because of functionality of the mixer without touching the labtop at all..and with this new Dascratch which is basically the same functionality..would it be a good idea??
i was wondering if this is a usb connectivity..how can i connect SSL and EXTERNAL HD and then Dascratch all in one labtop..my mac can only hold 2 usb ports..

a mixer for $300 vs. a $1500 scratch mixer for ssl isn't even a comparison in my mind. Stanton vs Rane? I've owned one Stanton mixer and that was enough for me. maybe they stepped up their game but there's no way the quality even matches the rane mixer

1. It's a laptop not labtop.
2. You would need to get a firewire external hard drive if you only have 2 usb ports.
3. Yes. This is great to replace the 57. It works great and is compact and very responsive to your commands.

sixxx, you are by far my favorite poster on the forums
but on subject:
NO THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.
That Stanton thing simply a toy for microwaves to play with. If you want to be taken seriously buy the 57 or the 56 or some sort of a man's mixer. I don't understand how you even consider the DaScratch (isn't the name enough to deter you).

how can buying a certain mixer allow someone to be taken more seriously?

there is no edit button on the forum unfortunately, what i meant by that was, the DaScratch is not a replacement for a mixer of any sort. it is ridiculous to put it in the same sentence as the ttm-57

Thanks for the compliment DCM.
lol @ Audio1. I wasn't being sarcastic. But, let me explain myself. I WOULD NEVER in a million years recommend any controller against a mixer and turntables. But, if you couldn't afford the 57, DaScratch would be a good idea. It's almost like any other programmable MIDI device. It would help you get the job done without having to reach for the laptop. Now, you'd still need a mixer so I'd recommend a 56 if you couldn't afford the 57. Not that it would replace the 57 and now you're free to mix without a mixer. That's not the point of DaScratch with SSL.
HOWEVER, that is the point of DaScratch with Traktor for what it was designed for. You could control that and microwave it. Something that I would never do. I'd use SSL in internal mode IN CASE OF EMERGENCY ONLY.
So, not a replacement for the 57 as you would still need it to do video and you'd still should have a mixer to mix instead of just having a MIDI device alone. I know you can do video with the SL1 and that other program that just came out, but that's another story.
I hope I made myself clear. :)

The DaScratch controller works fine connected to a POWERED USB hub. This is also how you would use 2 of them with a MacBook and SSL.
Is he being sarcastic? Sixxx received a beta unit and has some experience with the unit the rest of you do not.
LOL! Really? Like this guy? I'd love to see you call him a microwave DJ to his face.

And it's not supposed to be. in the case of DVS systems like SSL, it's meant to AUGMENT an existing system. This is especially important in a couple common situations. First, if you're a club DJ and work with installed mixers, this controller allows you to carry alot of the TTM57's functionality with you and use it in places where it's not possible to use your own mixer. And second, what if your favorite mixer isn't a 57? Again, this allows you to add some cool functionality to a setup in an easy to carry formfactor. It can also be used to control "helper" applications like MixEmergency, which is totally MIDI compatible.

You can use an akai mpd unit to accomplish the same thing or an m-audio trigger finger. The mpd16 retails for less than $100 at GC. That's why serato supports midi mapping...
Actually there are a whole host of midi controllers that will let you trigger cues, and map serato funtions to the control pads/knobs/switches, etc.

Yeah, i have a 15.4" MacBook Pro too and suffer from the same limitation as everyone else (only 1 port can really be used, and there are only 2 ports total). We made sure it would work fine as long as it's a powered hub.
Quite true. But you're not going to get as much control out of your Trigger Finger as you would out of the SCS.3d. Part of this has to do with the modality of the 3d and how it allows you to reconfigure the controller and give you a natural feeling interface for a whole lot of functionality. The layout of the Trigger Finger very much dictates what should get mapped to it.
A great example of what I'm talking about is the browse mode on the 3d. You use the circle area to scroll through your library - the edge giving you fast scrolling and the inside giving you fine control. In EITHER case, the controller never takes off on you and jumps to the ends of the library. Got a song you want? Double tapping on the middle of the circle will add that song to your prepare list. Double tapping on the left or right side of the outer circle will browse left or right. Using the outer buttons, you can load songs into the decks, toggle through the different viewing planes, and toggle between browse, import, review, or prepare. All of that is in a single area and mapped in a very natural way. Mapping up your Trigger Finger to do the same thing is certainly possible, but nowhere near as natural or intuitive. And you don't need a stand for it, it's small and packs easily in any record bag, and the 3d gives you the possibility of LED feedback - yes, even when it's not supported directly in Scratch Live itself.
That feature is in beta and currently not implemented yet. But we assure you that it will be available as a free update when it's released.

There is much more in the TTM57 than just triggering cue points etc. Much more which a 3d can't do (like effects for example). So saying that a 3d would replace your TTM57 is... wrong. Unless you are just triggering basic functions from the mixer - which would be very stupid to do since you can achieve this with basically any midi controller.
The 3d looks however interesting as a small, portable midi controller. But I am susped to how well the controls will re-act... I prefer some haptic response something a touchdisplay can't offer. But thats my personal preference. Also the name Stanton recalls bad experiences.

Besides the effects (which are of course not available without the TTM57), what else can the 57 give you beyond the 3d (that is related to application control)? I would be interested to know.
Can you map to any other MIDI controller? Absolutely. But I would argue that the 3d is much more friendly to a user as far as ergonomics go, and offers a more intuitive interface than something like a Trigger Finger. When you think about the amount of control the 3d gives you and break that down into the associated MIDI commands, then map those commands to the TF, you'll begin to see what I'm talking about. There are also benefits to the 3d that aren't immediately apparent. By using the DaRouter software, we're able to offer users alot of functionality they would otherwise either not get at all, or have to wait to get. MIDI feedback is a good example. We offer SSL users all kinds of feedback even though the application itself doesn't support it. There's also the ability to change existing app functionality - or create new functionality altogether. We've done this with the cue/play logic in Traktor and given the user a behavior they could not get by simply mapping their controller themselves. And best of all, all of the mojo "under the hood" of the SCS.3d is totally open and accessible to anyone who wants to look.
It's good enough for Big Wiz. Are your performances more demanding?
And this I totally understand. But your personal feelings on the brand have nothing to do with whether the 3d is a good controller or not.

Maybe one person's feelings don't matter much, but the aggregate of numerous people who have had numerous similar negative experiences with Stanton's products actually does matter. A lot.
I wish there were more reputable companies involved with making controllers. The likes of Stanton, Vestax and Numark do not give me much confidence in quality, durability, long-term reliability, or customer support. They all seem much more marketing-driven than anything else.

Your personal feelings, or anyone else's, do not factor in one bit in determining whether this or any other product is a well functioning and good quality product. I do reiterate that I understand that you don't trust Stanton as a brand. To a good degree we've earned that distrust. But Stanton is moving in a new direction now and trying to correct those old problems. It's a big reason why I left a perfectly good career to work here. The only thing we can do as a company about all of that in the past is to try and better live up to user expectations, and to put out higher quality products.
I won't talk about marketing, because I'm in product development. But (as an example) the reason Wiz started using the SCS.3d isn't because we paid him alot of money. We don't do that. He's friends with the guy who conceptualized the 3d, and got one to test and just ended up liking it. Most of our "marketing" is organic like that - not some slick polished machine.

Right. Drop a name. Big Wiz is Big Wiz. If he feels okay with not getting any haptic feedback when pushing buttons (you took my comment out of context) - that's fine. You should not think so one-dimensional. Every DJ has different demands. A hint: That does not mean that my performances need to be "more demanding" (whatever you want to imply with that), they may be different, due to the fact that my personal needs may be different.
Also the name Stanton recalls bad experiences.
And this I totally understand. But your personal feelings on the brand have nothing to do with whether the 3d is a good controller or not.
Really, you don't want to take it there.
The controller may or may not be the best thing on earth. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
The question is: Would you pay money for such a product - having in the back of your mind all the history esp. the bad experiences which many users made.
However, concerning this discussion
I feel, since you are a Stanton representative, it is doubtful, whether you are able to judge it from an impartial point of view and whether you will express an impartial opinion. IMHO this forum is not the right place (for a company representative) to debate this any further .

Look, if this or any other controller is not right for you, by all means don't buy it. I'm not trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. ALOT of people don't like the idea of touch surfaces at all, and I totally get that (I myself am having a hard time prying myself away from using the Nano for effects). But the fact is that the 3d IS the right controller for some people, and it brings lot to the table that no one else is bringing right now - especially in that price range.
Take it where exactly? Didn't I just say that Stanton as a brand has made some mistakes in the past and that we're going to have to try and work harder to fulfill user's expectations? I don't really know what else you're looking for.
That's funny, I was just thinking the same thing about you.
Konix's videos have me wanting to play around with a DDM4000 too. I think it's actually a cool bit of kit (and ironic of you to champion it in this particular thread). But you run into the same thing as any other mixer/controller - can you take it to the clubs you work at and use it there? This is one of the most compelling cases for the 3d. 2 of them together are about 10" wide and 9" tall, and about the thickness of 6 records - so they fit easily in anything a DJ would carry to a gig. There are no knobs to break off in a bag, and no fader caps to lose.

Well, I don't work for Stanton but I am using it and I gotta tell you.... it's really nice. I've had more problems with the 57 and it's a Rane product!? Stanton really made a solid product. (Yes. Wow, what a statement. A radio shack mixer IS also the right mixer for some people. Matter of fact - I know someone who uses it as a battle mixer - he is sixxx's best friend ;))) Or at least was until he left the forum.

You don't want to debate the details on a public forum. Trust me.

I think you did not get the point.
If I was an employee of a Stanton - it would had been obvious that there is a conflict of interests when I speak about a product from Stanton on competitors (Serato) forum and try to promote it on the competitors forum.

Until Serato starts making MIDI controllers, or Stanton starts making DJ software, how in the world are they competitors? As far as my participating goes, this thread is ABOUT the SCS.3d. I did not start it. I've been a member of this forum for years. And while I did sell my personal Serato Scratch Live, I have one at work that I use regularly. I spent time documenting Serato's MIDI implementation, and even more time making sure that Jim's Serato preset was compelling and bug free. So yeah nik, I think I'll stick around.

I think you still did not get the point. I don't care about your forum presence. Whether or not you are breaking the forum rules by promoting your product, or whether or not you are contacting users starting from this forum is not my business. Someone else has to bother about this - not me.
But the point is... There is an obvious conflict of interests if you write something about a product from a company - of which you are an employee of.

We are talking about judging how good the product is and expressing that opinion, and how much weight you can put into such an opinion.

In that case, knowing that Craig is a Stanton employee, you can take it with a pinch of salt, just like when a member of the Serato team bigs up their own product.
Personally I think Serato and the SCS.3d sucks/rules* especially when used together.

And this I totally understand. But your personal feelings on the brand have nothing to do with whether the 3d is a good controller or not.
Those bastards still owe me for that saucer shaped piece of shit door stop I still have to this day. $500 bux of shit I never got to use even once at a gig. And all along they knew there was a flaw in their product. Giving these goons another opportunity to earn my trust is out of the question.

I'll admit, their laptop stand is ok. I bet that has to do with it not containing any electronics or software.

I have been using the SCS.3d's since they came out and I think they are simply awesome for triggering cues and loops without having to peck at the laptop during sets. Beyond the cues and loops triggering I have also used it to jump back to relative mode after a track auto-popped in to internal when I let the record run out from time to time. It may be a little pricy for I think for the combination of cool and useful factor I think they are worth it... I just wish I had a better place to set them up on my rig.
A cool trick is if you slide your finger across cue "zones" it will jump to the next cue like to tapped it so you can do some interesting juggling if you time yourself right sliding your finger about on the pad.

No comment! Haha, thanks Mark.
My personal feeling is that people should use what feels most comfortable for them. For me the SCS.3d has become a pivotal component to my set and I couldn't imagine DJing without it. Now I will also be the first to say that I also use the KP3 and TTM-56 right next to it, Stanton employee or not... at the end of the day we are all artists will gravitate towards what suites our individual needs and desires. Also as artists we tend to be opinionated. That's a good thing!
When it comes to comparing solutions to say what is best, I won't do that (going along with my above statement). However I will say, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about the mapping and integration with SSL then sat down and created the preset in a way that I thought would suite the needs of a DVS user best. For instance, there are 3 different ways to set a cue point using the SCS.3d and the SSL preset which came from thinking about different scenarios in a live environment. I'm most interested in hearing peoples thoughts on the current integration and what they like and more importantly what they would like to see different. That's where as a technical resource for the community we can be of most use. We spent considerable time working on DaRouter to allow the hardware to interact and do different things for different tastes as once again there is no "one size fits all" solution when it comes to anything involved in a creative process... be it midi controller or paint brush.
By the way there is already a completely different integration that we created with Nick Nack of gigacrate based on how he saw the best way to use a single deck with his way of DJing.
Haha, and yes, the Uberstand is from Miami. A good friend of mine created it and we worked on getting it out to the world together. I think we even incorporated a bit of feedback from a Skratchworx review too.
So there is my comment! :)

I just got mine a couple of days ago... I could care less about turntables at this point (flame away; I'm fireproof :-P) so I can see that I'll be trying to find a way to map the pitch control in place of the volume control (I'd still rather use the mixer for that). Is it possible just to change the midi mapping of a single portion of the preset instead of re-mapping an entirely new one from "dascratch"?
That Gigacrate preset looks pretty good and I'll download it as soon as I'm on my laptop... a detailed explanation of the alternative trigger setting starts around 2:00: Watchwww.youtube.com

So I've started programming my own settings... it's gone well for the most part. Editing the SSL preset just led to freeze city so I started from the generic single SCS dual virtual template. I borrowed the gigacrate idea and split everything down the middle, with the intention being to have the "deck 2" settings for additional expandability. However, when I switch to deck 2 & back it gets confused and starts combining/assigning multiple midi actions to buttons that were working fine before. To fix, I have to go back to midi learn mode, unassign the extra actions and reassign them to where they're supposed to go. I don't know if this is a "DaRouter" issue or an SSL one, but I remember something similar happening when I used my M-Audio Radium 49 and tried changing octaves to access more keys to assign.
Aside from that issue, this thing works pretty well :).

I got DaScratch a week or so ago. Tried it out with Traktor - excellent! Every button does exactly what it says it does, it's extremely intuitive, and - as the name implies - you can scratch with it, too. Then tried it out with Serato - and it blew my mind. Barely any button does what it says it does (Vinyl mode is used to browse through music collection, Play is used to set Cue, Cue is used to play when held down, Sync censors, Trigger instant doubles, and so forth), you can't scratch with it, when you change decks you can see it on the unit but not on screen, etc etc etc. Wow! According to insider info the reason for that is that both Serato and/or Rane refused to give Stanton the necessary MIDI info or some such. Sad, this. But as it is, in conjunction with Serato it is at best dysfunctional, and if a proper preset does not surface soon, I'll either have to return it, or reluctantly go back to using it with Traktor.

Agreed, the default SSL setting is hella confusing/useless if you're not a turntablist and ITCH support would have made it a complete package. Maybe one day... in the meantime it's still an excellent replacement for the X-Session Pro (or other similarly limited MIDI controller) after reprogramming.

Hey Swavek, let me address some of the things you mention in your post.
About the buttons not matching functionality. We went back and forth on this. I wish we could make MIDI controllers that had NO silk-screened functionality so users would be totally free to map them up however they want. But unfortunately that's not the direction we went with for the 3d.
With the Serato preset, we knew that (a) SSL users WANTED to use their decks in their performance, and (b) Serato's MIDI implementation was being implemented one piece at a time and had a different focus than (for instance) Traktor's implementation. So we felt that the most natural role for the SCS.3d's use with Serato would be a "helper" role. We weren't trying to replace the decks in the SSL implementation - instead we wanted to give the user access to the functionality that would otherwise make the user interact directly with the computer. It wasn't because the folks at Serato didn't work with us. To be honest, we kept this whole controller project under wraps for a long time because it represented a new direction for Stanton. Now that things are out in the open, we hope to cultivate relationships with software developers like Serato and Native Instruments and make the experience with our hardware as good as possible.
As far as new presets go, developing them is now a full time job for us. So new stuff is always in the works. Our forums are the best place for info along those lines. I'm sorry we didn't meet your expectations this time, but maybe you'll see something you like in the near future.

Not all of us do... I originally got SSL for a number of reasons (stability, low cpu load, the ability to use multiple formats for control purposes, etc.). The vinyl control factor is cool and helped ease the transition (digitizing vinyl takes time and having the ability to use both at the same time helped immensly) but it was never something I wanted to be anchored to forever. Heresy is my friend.
A "vinyl scrub" driver update would be much appreciated. Turntablists wouldn't have to use it if they didn't want to, and I'd rather not spend gobs of money and waste a month or more of mp3 prep time converting to a new DVS...

Not all of us do... I originally got SSL for a number of reasons (stability, low cpu load, the ability to use multiple formats for control purposes, etc.). can the DaRouter also map 'alt+cmd+1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0' to midi control? ie: loop rolls.

We really didn't see this as a very compelling use case at first, but ALOT of people have asked us for it. The cool thing about the DaRouter software is it allows us to totally change the behavior of the 3d if we want to. Now that we know people want a preset that offers more of that kind of control, we'll try to implement towards that.
DaRouter can do what MIDI Translator can do, and converting MIDI to keystrokes is in that list. Technical issues aside, you should see a new preset soon.

I believe the alt functions are also MIDI mappable. So you don't need to have keyboard emulation to do this. I'm definitely thinking about how to best implement these for the next version of the preset.

Depends on what you mean by this. Changing the actual sensitivity of a detected press is not possible. The firmware is pretty much hardcoded to make sensitivity extremely accurate and is calibrated by unit to keep performance consistent across all hardware.
However, sensitivity for things like relative scrolling through lists (or the master volume control) are all filtered in the preset. For instance you might notice that we dont use the knob in SSL for scrolling through lists. We use individual up/down messages for scrolls because we make things more discreet this way. So in the preset it actually waits for 12 steps to be read from the controller before it registers an up-down on the center slider, whereas with the circular outer ring it doesnt filter and thats why you can scroll super fast with that control.
Does that make sense?

Perfect sense... that's what I mean, sort of similar to the way I set it on my laptop trackpad. I like the pressure sensitivity just fine... very responsive :).
Something else that would be cool since we're on the subject... I'd like to have the ability to pick which modes go where (since the button labels don't match up anyway) including the option to have more than 2 of the same mode. That would come in really handy for use as a production/Ableton tool (6 x EQ/FX mode = 18 channel mixer w/24 assignable buttons/triggers, 2 master sliders & 4 global transport controls).

Hehe, yup, this is EXACTLY what we want to do for the next generic preset. Essentially allow any of the presets to be sliders, buttons, etc. This is extremely important for use cases such as live where every user will have a different configuration. We just face a technical challenge in storing how things have been setup between preset relaunches as right now all variables are flushed when you close / open DaRouter. But trust me, its in the feature request queue. :)

Did this ever get sorted? I haven't checked the Stanton forum yet...
I've been using mine for a while now and am quite satisfied with it. I stuck with using the SSL preset because it works (and I had a horrendous time trying to duplicate the crate-surfing option in "Vinyl" mode). In my setup it has a few very specific purposes and handles them well (loop/cue point/track selection management) but I gave up on trying to map pitch to it anywhere; I couldn't master the technique of picking my finger straight up without rolling the tip one way or the other; it made it nearly impossible to "dial-in" so I'm stuck using my old X-Session Pro for it's wimpy (but functional) faders. I do like the fact that I can use both simultaneously on an Ibook g4 1.33 with no problems.
If there were semi-vinyl emulation I'd buy a 2nd one ;).

Was looking at the denon, then the kontrol x1 and now I've come across the scs3d and I really want one!
Are they working on a preset for ssl 2.0 so that the unit can control effects? This is the only thing holding me back from getting one right now.
Also, I only currently have one deck set up due to space limitations at uni. If I got one of these units could I use it as a mini second deck in serato?
Seems like his thing has some really cool possibilities and looks a lot more flexible than the denon and x1 units.

Maytag, I think you're confusing the software with the controllers. Yes, SSL will only work with a TTM-57, SL1 or SL3, but that's not even what we're talking about; we're referring to MIDI controllers, which connect to the computer itself.

I used it at an actual gig last night for the first time. (its a really small bar with no booth, So I was basically spinning behind the Bar.
I used the 57 and 2 SCS3Ds (The 3m was connected but i just used it as a hub) I also had the Denon controller plugged in..
It seemed to work, I had virtual deck control and could backspin and manually cue.
It will take ALOT of getting used to, and scratching is almost out of the question, but for a small footprint setup (at a low paying gig) where you cant (or dont want to) lug your real decks it works.

I really liked the unit and think it has great potential but I want to get rid of it now.
Being unable to trigger loops, cues and effects off a single page can get really confusing and is quite limiting in terms of time
Also, as I only have one unit, I have to press a button to switch between control for deck A and deck B. On more than one occasion i've gone to cue a new track and forgot to change to the non-playing deck, resulting in skipping back to a cue point on the previous song and screwing everything up!
I may keep it for a while but i think the X1 is going to be my next purchase.

This is long but please read. very important regarding Stanton.
Stanton products are poor and their customer service is the worst. I had an sa-12 craze mixer and the effects unit stopped working. I emailed their cs and told them of the issue, (the mixer still worked, just the effects unit was bad). Since i was dj'ing a bit, I told them I could not send it back for while. This was 10 months into my 1 year warranty. They emailed back and told me to keep the email and that they would honor the warranty. 1 year and 4months in, i'm going on vacation and won't need my mixer so I email to set up an RA. My customer service person is no longer with them and I am connected to his replacement. They say no. I send them the email and call. He tells me its been too long. I say how can I send in my mixer when I use it weekly. Get this, he tell me, "maybe you should get a back up mixer!!!!" I ask for his supervisor and am connected to the lead cs person who tells me its been too long. I send the email to him that says they will honor the warranty post 1 year since I made them aware of the problem prior to 1 year and also copy and paste their warranty that says, "...stanton must be made aware of the issue within 1 year from purchase date..". He emails back with the same warranty and outlines, "...at our discretion..."
I have all the emails archived if anyone questions this.

It's not just Stanton... general rule of thumb. From the company's perspective, if someone says something is broken on a product and doesn't send it in until 6 MONTHS later, how do they know that whatever was broken didn't break within the post-warranty time period?
Example: I know my CD/DVD burner on my mac will die eventually. My Applecare expires in July; I could tell them it's broken now, use it until it -actually- breaks (whenever that may be), and send it to them saying "here; fix it".

Fck Stanton for life.
why don't you have a back-up mixer

Well, if you want to check them out and see them in action, I'll be doing a clinic on them (the SCS 3m and 2 SCS 3d's) at Dub Spot in NYC tomorow (Tue. June 8th) showing how they work with SSL and Video-SL at 9:15 (I think that's around when it starts)... contact Dub Spot for more info.
